Phytoplankton abundance, community structure and diversity in the eutrophicated Orbetello lagoon (Tuscany) from 1995 to 2001 ArchiMer
Nuccio, C; Melillo, C; Massi, L; Innamorati, M.
The Orbetello lagoon consists of two coastal ponds, Laguna di Ponente and Laguna di Levante, characterized by high nutrient concentrations, very poor exchanges with the sea and subjected to recurrent eutrophication crisis mainly in the past decades. To assess its current trophic status, from 1995 to 2001 the temporal evolution and spatial distribution of environmental factors, phytoplankton biomass and composition have been investigated. In this paper, the mean annual cycles of phytoplankton abundance, community structure and diversity are discussed. The seasonal cycles of micro- and nanophytoplankton densities are characterized by high frequency oscillations with fast increasing and decreasing blooms, but generally the lowest densities occur in winter,...

Iron biogeochemistry across marine systems - progress from the past decade ArchiMer
Breitbarth, E.; Achterberg, E. P.; Ardelan, M. V.; Baker, A. R.; Bucciarelli, E.; Chever, F.; Croot, P. L.; Duggen, S.; Gledhill, M.; Hassellov, M.; Hassler, C.; Hoffmann, L. J.; Hunter, K. A.; Hutchins, D. A.; Ingri, J.; Jickells, T.; Lohan, M. C.; Nielsdottir, M. C.; Sarthou, G.; Schoemann, V.; Trapp, J. M.; Turner, D. R.; Ye, Y..
Based on an international workshop (Gothenburg, 14-16 May 2008), this review article aims to combine interdisciplinary knowledge from coastal and open ocean research on iron biogeochemistry. The major scientific findings of the past decade are structured into sections on natural and artificial iron fertilization, iron inputs into coastal and estuarine systems, colloidal iron and organic matter, and biological processes. Potential effects of global climate change, particularly ocean acidification, on iron biogeochemistry are discussed. The findings are synthesized into recommendations for future research areas.
