Risk Analyses of Disposal of Pig Carcasses Smaller Than 40 KG in The Netherland AgEcon
Mul, Monique F.; Bokma-Bakker, Martien H.; Eijick, Ineke.
A study based on the literature, an on- farm audit and expert knowledge, was carried out to determine 1) the risks of spread of animal diseases among farms; 2) odour nuisance due to carcasses at the rendering plant; and 3) measurements to reduce these risks. It was concluded that the possible risks of spread of animal diseases among farms due to the removal of carcasses mainly has to do with the entrance of the place from where the carcasses are collected by the driver of the truck , the contact of the grab of the haulier with the cadaver container or place and driving with the haulier which is not fully closed. The true size of the risk of spread of disease is unknown and is probably different for each pathogen. Strict hygiene measurements by the driver...

Technical efficiency and environmental pressures of pig farms in Hungary AgEcon
Latruffe, Laure; Desjeux, Yann; Fogarasi, Jozsef; Bakucs, Lajos Zoltan; Ferto, Imre.
Pig farming is one of the strongest polluters of water resources due to its intensive production techniques and slurry rejection. Several European countries have already introduced environmental regulations aiming at reducing the pollution caused by nitrates from agricultural sources, but not yet Hungary. This paper investigates how Hungarian pig farms would be affected if such regulations are to be enforced. We calculate farm technical efficiency separately for two types of pig production systems – namely farrowing only and farrow-to-finish farms (FAFI farms) and finishing only farms (FI farms) – using 2001 data on pig activity and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). We then investigate whether environmental regulations would affect the farms’ technical...

THE IMPACT OF MANURE PRODUCTION RIGHTS ON CAPITAL INVESTMENT IN THE DUTCH PIG SECTOR AgEcon
Gardebroek, Cornelis.
In this paper the effect of manure production rights on investment decisions of Dutch pig farmers is examined. A dynamic optimization model of investment that explicitly takes zero investments into account is augmented by a constraint on production arising from the introduction of manure production rights. In the theoretical model it is shown that such a constraint has a reducing effect on investment. The presence of this constraint is tested for using GMM structural break tests. The results provide evidence for the hypothesis that manure production rights have reduced investments through its effect on production.

Answer to the challenges of the 21st century in the Hungarian pig sector AgEcon
Balogh, Peter; Ertsey, Imre; Szucs, Istvan.
Whether particular countries, regions within countries, and particular societies gain or lose in the process of globalization depends on where they are in the process of agricultural transformation and to what extent they can adjust? The Hungarian pork chain faces considerable disadvantages in several aspects as opposed to competing countries. In countries with developed meat chain a powerful concentration could be observed, whereas in Hungary, although disintegration has not increased, decentralization still prevails. In our research the operation of the co-operative was modelled as a generalized network problem in 2008. The model allows the quantification of the number of pigs from given farms to slaughterhouses, the maximum revenue from sales, the...
