Induction of Zenk protein expression within the nucleus taeniae of the amygdala of pigeons following tone and shock stimulation BJMBR
Brito,I.; Britto,L.R.G.; Ferrari,E.A.M..
In this study, we evaluated the expression of the Zenk protein within the nucleus taeniae of the pigeon’s amygdala (TnA) after training in a classical aversive conditioning, in order to improve our understanding of its functional role in birds. Thirty-two 18-month-old adult male pigeons (Columba livia), weighing on average 350 g, were trained under different conditions: with tone-shock associations (experimental group; EG); with shock-alone presentations (shock group; SG); with tone-alone presentations (tone group; TG); with exposure to the training chamber without stimulation (context group; CG), and with daily handling (naive group; NG). The number of immunoreactive nuclei was counted in the whole TnA region and is reported as density of Zenk-positive...

Effect of Photoperiod on the Egg Production, Plasma Luteinizing Hormone, Follicle-Stimulating Hormone, Gonadal Hormones, and Mrna Levels of Lh and Fsh in the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal Axis of Pigeons Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Wang,Y; Li,YB; Yang,HM; Wang,ZY.
ABSTRACT We investigated the egg production, changes in luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), gonadal hormones, and their mRNA levels in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis of White King pigeons submitted to different photoperiods. The treatments consisted of three photoperiods (8 h light (L):16 h dark (D), 12L:12D, and 16L:8D), with three replicates of twelve pairs of adult pigeons. The birds were exposed the photoperiods for 45 days. Egg production performance was recorded daily. Six pigeon pairs per replicate were selected for plasma collection, and six pigeon pairs per replicate for the resection of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. Egg production was significantly improved by long-day lighting (16L:8D), while...

Cryptococcosis and its importance in Veterinary Medicine MV&Z
Müller, Marina; Nishizawa, Márcia.
Cryptococcosis is an opportunist systemic mycosis considered as zoonosis caused by the complex Cryptococcus neoformans that comprises two etiologic agents, C. neoformans and C. gattii. Both of them can attack birds, humans, domestic animals and wild ones. The infection is produced by spores inhalation. These spores are often isolated from pigeon (Columba livia) faeces. These birds are considered as the natural fungus reservoir. The lesions of this disease can be found in several organ systems and it is one of the mycosis with prompt diagnosis because the infectious agent presents a marked neurological tropism, plenty of fungy elements in the CSF and in the lesions. The treatment of animals and humans must be performed with selected different drugs to...
