The genetic variability of Oligosarcus paranensis was estimated from a population collected in São Francisco river, Prudentópolis county in Paraná State (Brazil) using the electrophoresis in starch gel technique. Eleven enzymatic systems were analyzed: Aspartate aminotransaminase (AAT; E. C. 2.6.1), Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH; E. C. 1.1.1.1), Esterase (EST; E. C. 3.1.1.1), Glucose-6-phosphate isomerase (GPI; E. C. 5.3.1.9), Glycerol-3-Phosphate dehydrogenase (G3PDH; E. C. 1.1.1), Isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH; E. C. 1.1.1.42), L-lactate dehydrogenase (LDH; E. C. 1.1.1.27), Malate dehydrogenase (MDH; E. C. 1.1.1.37 ), Malate dehydrogenase NADP (ME; E. C. 1.1.1.40), Phosphoglucomutase (PGM; E. C. 5.4.2.2) and Sorbitol dehydrogenase (SORB; E.C. 1.1.1.14).... |

Studies were performed on various aspects related to the feeding of Eigenmannia trilineata in the upper Paraná River floodplain, from June 1993 to July 1994, at four places with different types of bottom and waters speed. A number of 279 fish had its stomachal contents analyzed by occurence and point methods in which it was applied on its frequencies the feeding index. Two hundred an sixty two specimens were utilized to the analysis of the feeding activity that it was based on frequency and middle degree of stomach repletion. For the morfological analyse utilized 12 individuals. It was verified fourteen items on species diet which it was found chiefly Chironomidae (Diptera) and detritus. Seasonal, area variations were verified in feeding activity and the... |

Two allopatric morphotypes of the genus Rinelocaria were compared through the allozyme electrophoresis technique: one morphotype, R. pentamaculata, from the Keller River in the middle stretch of the Ivaí River basin and the other, R. aff. pentamaculata, from the São João River in the upper portion of the Ivaí River basin. The morphotype from the São João River was collected upstream from the São João waterfall, which is about 80 m deep. Twelve enzymatic systems (AAT, ADH, EST, GCDH, G3PDH, GPI, IDH, LDH, MDH, ME, PGM and SOD) were analyzed, which allowed to score 22 loci. Only loci Aat-2, Est-3 and Mdh-C showed polymorphism. The two samples differed in allele frequencies at the three polymorphic loci. The average expected heterozygosity for all loci was... |

The present work analyses and describes Merluccius merluccius ovarian cycle in the Bay of Biscay as an example of partial spawner. Three methods were employed: a macroscopic examination of about 10,000 ovaries -- a cytologic and histologic study -- an investigation of the size structure of the oocytes population of 63 ovaries. The author developed an original mathematical method for serial spawning demonstration. He demonstrates that hake is a partial spawner: a female usually rapidly spawns 4 or 5 times without ovaries rest. On this basis, he gives a new reference scale of the maturity stages of the ovarian cycle: after developing (II), ripe (III), running (IV), the partly spent ovary is named (II+); the repetitive sequence III-IV-II + characterize serial... |

The authors present the necessary to sort catfish and sea bream fries in order to limit cannibalism, to constitute homogeneous groups. In the same time they studied different sorters (bars sorter, grating sorter and the conception of an experimental sorter) and their effects on the juveniles (behaviour). Introduction: In hatchery, early sorting of Sea Bass or Sea Bream fry after weaning can become necessary for several reasons: a) To obtain homogeneous batches thus simplifying growing management by better controlling: - Specific water flow for precise ranges of size or weight, - Food distribution granularity, - Daily feeding rate. b) To limit cannibalism which can become high when population dispersion is spread out. This dispersion greatly increases... |

This work, divided in three parts, intends to establish a synthesis of knowledge about electric sea fishing. Taxis and tetanus thresholds for stimuli. In the second part, fish behaviour in electric field is described to know what sort of stimuli are the most efficient. The third part shows a fishing gear with light, electric field and pump and sums up the results of I.S.T.P.M. studies. Different problems are discussed and theoretical efficiency of the device is evaluated for sardines, Sardina pilchardus. At last, foreign studies about electric beam trawl are approached in an annex part. |

Centropomidae and Serranidae, sometimes collectively misnamed "sea basses", are suitable for aquaculture in pens, ponds, and raceways around the tropical and subtropical latitudes of the world. Western Atlantic Ocean species were recently considered for farming. South Florida, Mexico, Central and South America and the Antilles areas of the Caribbean Basin have extensive areas suitable for farming groupers and snook. Principal species of interest are the common snook (Centropomus undecimalis ), the fat snook (C. parallelus ), the Nassau grouper (Epinephelus striatus ), Black seabass (Centropristis striatus ), Gag (Mycteroperca microlepis ), and jewfish (E. itajara ). |

A condition in Sparus aurata larvae termed "distended gut syndrome" (DGS) has become a major problem in the past three seasons. Unable to digest rotifers and brine shrimp nauplii, the larvae develop a swollen abdomen, exhibit a disoriented spinning motion and are swept passively with the current. Bacterial or viral infections were suspected. Chloramphenicol-supplemented larval food did not affect the prevalence of DGS. Virus-like particles 80 nm in diameter were observed in necrotic cytoplasm of midgut wall cells. |
