New records of Monodelphis kunsi (Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae) from Brazil Mastozool. neotrop.
Hannibal,Wellington; Figueiredo,Valquiria V; Filho,Paulo Landgref; Godoi,Maurício N.
We review the known distribution of Monodelphis kunsi from South America and reported nine new localities of occurrence in Mato Grosso do Sul state, southwestern Brazil. These new records fill the gap on geographic distribution of M. kunsi in southwestern Brazil. The species presents wide geographic range including distinct habitats. The lack of studies in southwestern Brazil and the non-utilization of pitfall traps can be the main factors responsible for the lack of knowledge on distribution of small mammal species to this region.

Evaluating leaf litter beetle data sampled by Winkler extraction from Atlantic forest sites in southern Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Hopp,Philipp Werner; Caron,Edilson; Ottermanns,Richard; Roß-Nickoll,Martina.
Evaluating leaf litter beetle data sampled by Winkler extraction from Atlantic forest sites in southern Brazil. To evaluate the reliability of data obtained by Winkler extraction in Atlantic forest sites in southern Brazil, we studied litter beetle assemblages in secondary forests (5 to 55 years after abandonment) and old-growth forests at two seasonally different points in time. For all regeneration stages, species density and abundance were lower in April compared to August; but, assemblage composition of the corresponding forest stages was similar in both months. We suggest that sampling of small litter inhabiting beetles at different points in time using the Winkler technique reveals identical ecological patterns, which are more likely to be influenced...

The influence of land use systems on soil and surface litter fauna in the western region of Santa Catarina Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Bartz,Marie Luise Carolina; Brown,George Gardner; Orso,Renato; Mafra,Álvaro Luiz; Baretta,Dilmar.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the abundance of soil and surface litter fauna in the western region of Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil, in the following land use systems (LUS): no-tillage crops (NT), integrated crop-livestock (ICL), pasture (PA), Eucalyptus plantation (EP) and native forest fragments (NF). Sampling was done in three counties in the western region of Santa Catarina: Xanxerê, Chapecó and São Miguel do Oeste, in two seasons (winter and summer). The evaluation of soil/litter fauna in each LUS was performed by installing nine "pitfall traps" per sampling grid (3 x 3). The counties are true replicas. The soil for the chemical attributes was collected at the same sampling points for soil fauna. Altogether, 17 taxa were identified in...

Coleopterofauna em floresta e pastagem no norte do Paraná, Brasil, coletada com armadilha de solo Zoologia
Medri,Ísis Meri; Lopes,José.
The environmental transformations constitute the principal cause of changes in biodiversity. This make the comparative studies between natural and altered environments very important. This research compare the beetle fauna at the following areas: isolated forest fragment and pasture at the secondary stage of succession. Beetles were collected using four pitfall traps baited with cattle meat in each area, fortnightly from November 1998 to April 1999. A total of 17,721 individuals from 30 families of Coleóptera in forest and 6,597 individuals belanging to 32 families in pasture was collected. The Sorensen index was used to calculate similarity, and Shannon index to calculate diversity. The qualitative similarity found was 0.70 and the quantitative similarity...

The environmental transformations constitute the principal cause of changes in biodiversity decrease. This make the comparative studies between natural and altered environments very important. This work compare the fauna of Scarabaeidae at the following areas: isolated forest fragment and pasture at the secondary stage of succession. Scarabs beetles were collected using four pitfall traps baited with cattle meat in each habitat, fortnightly from November 1998 to April 1999. It was collected a total of 3,113 individuals from 32 species in forest and 956 individuals from 27 species in pasture. The Sorensen index was used to calculate similarity, and Shannon index to calculate diversity. The qualitative similarity found was 0.64 and the quantitative...

Efficiency of snake sampling methods in the Brazilian semiarid region Anais da ABC (AABC)
Mesquita,Paulo C.M.D.; Passos,Daniel C.; Cechin,Sonia Z..
The choice of sampling methods is a crucial step in every field survey in herpetology. In countries where time and financial support are limited, the choice of the methods is critical. The methods used to sample snakes often lack objective criteria, and the traditional methods have apparently been more important when making the choice. Consequently researches using not-standardized methods are frequently found in the literature. We have compared four commonly used methods for sampling snake assemblages in a semiarid area in Brazil. We compared the efficacy of each method based on the cost-benefit regarding the number of individuals and species captured, time, and financial investment. We found that pitfall traps were the less effective method in all...

Survey of edaphic fauna in forest fragment in the municipality of Anchieta (SC, Brazil) Biota Neotropica
Brancher,Denise; Roza-Gomes,Margarida Flores.
Among the edaphic Hexapods, the insects are more abundant and important in that they act as environmental indicators. This study aimed to conduct a survey of the edaphic fauna in a forest fragment of transition from ombrophilous forest to mixed seasonal deciduous forest in the municipality of Anchieta, SC, Brazil. Samples were collected every fortnight from May to August 2010 by using the method of pitfall traps. Were collected 6598 individuals. The groups more abundant was Hymenoptera with 3398 individuals (51%), Collembola with a total of 1370 individuals (21%) and Diptera represented by 910 individuals (14%). The Simpson Index was found 0.60 and the Shannon Diversity Index was 3.00. The results obtained show that the place studied by provide conditions...
