Role of steroid hormones and external factors in the control of pituitary gonadotropic activity of female European eel (Anguilla anguilla ). ArchiMer
Leloup, H; Fontaine, Y; Dufour, S; Querat, B.
Gonadotropic activity is relatively low in the female freshwater (FW) eel (A. anguilla ): pituitary GTH was about 15 ng equivalent cGTH/mg fresh tissue. Plasma GTH was always less than 1 ng equivalent cGTH/ml and often undetectable (< 0.2 ng equivalent cGTH/ml). Ovarian steroidogenesis in FW fish is similarly low; plasma concentration of both free testosterone (T) and free estradiol (E sub(2)) were less than 0.3 ng/ml as measured by RIA. Treatment with E sub(2) in FW fish caused a great increase in pituitary GTH, up to 1000 times control values, without changing plasma GTH. Stimulation of gonadotropic activity and ovarian development occur during the eel's migration to the Sargasso Sea. Adaptation to seawater (SW) caused a great increase of plasma E...

Study of Sphenoid Sinus Anatomy in Relation to Endoscopic Surgery International Journal of Morphology
Sareen,Deepika; Agarwal,A. K.; Kaul,J. M.; Sethi,Ashwani.
For radical surgery of the past, the precise definition of the clefts of the paranasal sinuses was of limited significance. In the recent years, the transsphenoidal approach to the pituitary gland has come into practice and the study of the surgical anatomy and relationships of the sphenoid sinus has gained increased significance. To better define this anatomy, 20 sphenoid sinuses in cadavers were dissected to reveal important anatomical relationships, dimensions, volume and pneumatization of the sphenoid sinus. The results of the study are discussed with particular reference to the important surgical anatomical features of the sphenoid sinus. The results also point towards the possibility of racial variations in terms of relationships of the sphenoid...

Histo-cytological responses of the prolactin cells of the catfish Heteropneustes fossilis to cadmium exposure Acta Toxicol. Argent.
Srivastav,A.K; Rai,Rubi; Mishra,D; Srivastav,S. K; Suzuki,Nobuo.
Cadmium is an important metal for modern industrial processes and, being biologically non-essential, poses health hazards to the organisms. In this study we aimed to evaluate the effect of cadmium exposure on the histo-cytology of prolactin cells in the freshwater catfish, Heteropneustes (H.) fossilis. Fish were subjected to 288 mg/L (0.8 of 96 h LC50) and 72 mg/L (0.2 of 96 h LC50) of cadmium chloride for short-term and long-term, respectively. After sacrificing the fish, the blood was collected on 24, 48, 72 and 96 h in short-term and after 7, 14, 21, and 28 days in long-term experiment and analyzed for plasma calcium levels. Also, pituitary glands were fixed on these intervals. The plasma calcium levels of short-term cadmium exposed fish remain...

Morphometric and ultrastructural analysis of different pituitary cell populations in undernourished monkeys BJMBR
Cónsole,G.M.; Jurado,S.B.; Oyhenart,E.; Ferese,C.; Pucciarelli,H.; Gómez Dumm,C.L.A..
Undernutrition elicited by a low-protein diet determines a marked reduction of hypophyseal activity and affects the function of the respective target organs. The objective of the present investigation was to study the ultrastructural and quantitative immunohistochemical changes of the different pituitary cell populations in undernourished monkeys that had been previously shown to have significant changes in craniofacial growth. Twenty Saimiri sciureus boliviensis monkeys of both sexes were used. The animals were born in captivity and were separated into two groups at one year of age, i.e., control and undernourished animals. The monkeys were fed ad libitum a 20% (control group) and a 10% (experimental group) protein diet for two years. Pituitaries were...

Regulation of pituitary hormones and cell proliferation by components of the extracellular matrix BJMBR
Paez-Pereda,M.; Kuchenbauer,F.; Arzt,E.; Stalla,G.K..
The extracellular matrix is a three-dimensional network of proteins, glycosaminoglycans and other macromolecules. It has a structural support function as well as a role in cell adhesion, migration, proliferation, differentiation, and survival. The extracellular matrix conveys signals through membrane receptors called integrins and plays an important role in pituitary physiology and tumorigenesis. There is a differential expression of extracellular matrix components and integrins during the pituitary development in the embryo and during tumorigenesis in the adult. Different extracellular matrix components regulate adrenocorticotropin at the level of the proopiomelanocortin gene transcription. The extracellular matrix also controls the proliferation of...

Stimulatory effects of adenosine on prolactin secretion in the pituitary gland of the rat BJMBR
Picanço-Diniz,D.L.W.; Valença,M.M.; Favaretto,A.L.V.; Antunes-Rodrigues,J..
We investigated the effects of adenosine on prolactin (PRL) secretion from rat anterior pituitaries incubated in vitro. The administration of 5-N-methylcarboxamidoadenosine (MECA), an analog agonist that preferentially activates A2 receptors, induced a dose-dependent (1 nM to 1 µM) increase in the levels of PRL released, an effect abolished by 1,3-dipropyl-7-methylxanthine, an antagonist of A2 adenosine receptors. In addition, the basal levels of PRL secretion were decreased by the blockade of cyclooxygenase or lipoxygenase pathways, with indomethacin and nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA), respectively. The stimulatory effects of MECA on PRL secretion persisted even after the addition of indomethacin, but not of NDGA, to the medium. MECA was unable to...
