Phenotypic and genotypic characterization and compatibility among genotypes to select elite clones of cupuassu Acta Amazonica
ALVES,Rafael Moysés; SILVA,Carlos Rogério de Sousa; ALBUQUERQUE,Paulo Sérgio Bevilaqua de; SANTOS,Vinicius Silva dos.
ABSTRACT The expansion of the genetic base of cultivated materials is an ongoing activity of the cupuassu (Theobroma grandiflorum) breeding program. However, the parents involved need to be genotypically and phenotypically characterized to ensure compatibility of crossings, as well as to assist in the selection of more promising individuals for hybridization. This study aimed to identify and select T. grandiflorum clones that are compatible and genetically divergent using tools such as the estimates of genotypic, phenotypic, and combined distances, as well as the compatibility rates among clones. The genetic distance analysis of the clones was performed with 14 heterologous microsatellite primers of cocoa (Theobroma cacao) that amplify the DNA of cupuassu....

RIVERA MÉNDEZ,YURANY DAYANNA; MORENO CHACÓN,ANDRÉS LEONARDO; ROMERO,HERNÁN MAURICIO.
The interspecific hybrid, Elaeis oleifera x Elaeis guineensis (OxG) is an alternative for improving the competitiveness and sustainability of the Latin American oil palm agro-industry, because of its partial resistance to some lethal diseases and also because of the high quality of its oil. A comparative characterization was conducted of the physiological and biochemical performance of seedlings of six OxG hybrids grown in hydroponics. Gas exchange, vegetative growth, protein, sugar and photosynthetic pigment content, and antioxidant system activity were determined. With the exception of gas exchange, the other variables showed significant differences between materials. The ´U1273´ and ´U1737´ materials showed greater vegetative growth with no expression...

Plant genomics: an overview Biol. Res.
CAMPOS-DE QUIROZ,HUGO.
Recent technological advancements have substantially expanded our ability to analyze and understand plant genomes and to reduce the gap existing between genotype and phenotype. The fast evolving field of genomics allows scientists to analyze thousand of genes in parallel, to understand the genetic architecture of plant genomes and also to isolate the genes responsible for mutations. Furthermore, whole genomes can now be sequenced. This review addresses these issues and also discusses ways to extract biological meaning from DNA data. Although genomic issuesare addressed from a plant perspective, this review provides insights into the genomic analyses of other organisms

Early selection of elite plants in Asparagus Bragantia
COINTRY,ENRIQUE LUIS; LÓPEZ ANIDO,FERNANDO SEBASTIÁN; GATTI,ILEANA; CRAVERO,VANINA PAMELA; FIRPO,INÉS TERESA; GARCÍA,STELLA MARIS.
In order to establish an efficient selection criterion the variability in three asparagus populations was evaluated defining the most important yield components and analysing its evolution along three growing seasons. The yield components, coefficient of variation (CV) and the proportion of plants contributing to 80% of the total yield were estimated. The elite plants were selected by mean of total yield and clusters techniques. Multiple regression showed that spear number (SN) and spear weight (SW) were the most important yield components. In every population, total yield (TY) and SN showed the highest values of CV, independently of sex. 69% of the plants contributed to the 80% of the total yield in the first year while in the second and third year the...

Drought stress mitigation with humic acid in two Cucumis melo L. genotypes differ in their drought tolerance Bragantia
Kıran,Servinç; Furtana,Gökçen Baysal; Talhouni,Manar; Ellialtıoğlu,Şeküre Şebnem.
ABSTRACT Different responses of two melon (Cucumis melo L.) genotypes (Şemame, drought and salt-tolerant and Ananas, drought and salt-sensitive) to drought stress with or without humic acid (HA) treatment were studied. The experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions. The experimental design was two factorial randomized block with 4 replicates. HA treatment increased the shoot fresh and dry weights and leaf area of both genotypes under drought stress. HA stimulated accumulation of K and Ca ions, chlorophyll (SPAD value) and antioxidant enzyme activity (superoxide dismutase-SOD, catalase-CAT and glutathione reductase-GR) in both genotypes. This effect was more clear in the Şemame genotype than in Ananas. As a result, HA treatment has been proved to...

Rufino,Elcio Rodrigo; Siqueira,Walter José; Marques,Márcia Ortiz Maio; Colombo,Carlos Augusto; Azevedo Filho,Joaquim Adelino; Martins,Antônio Lúcio Melo.
The aromatic and medicinal species Lippia alba is vigorous and rugged native to the South America (Atlantic Rainforest). Because it is an allogamous and self-incompatible species, natural populations have high morphological and chemical variability. This work had as objective to conduct a preliminary screening to identify new promising clones from a novel (recombinant) base population of Lippia alba with regard to its agronomic and phytochemical traits, using the linalool oil or chemotype as model. The two superior linalool clones, obtained by collection, were used as controls. Traits evaluated included: dry mass of leaves (DML), oil yield percentage (EOY%), oil production per plant (OP), and linalool percentage (LN%). Forty linalool chemotype clones were...

Characterization of tomato generations according to a three-way data analysis Bragantia
Medico,Ana Paula Del; Cabodevila,Victoria Guadalupe; Vitelleschi,Maria Susana; Pratta,Guillermo Raúl.
ABSTRACT Availability of a three-way data analysis to characterize two consecutive tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) generations is necessary to continue a plant breeding program with less uncertainty. The aim of this work was to analyze tomato fruit quality from F2 and F3 populations by two three-way data analysis: multiple factorial analysis (MFA) and generalized procrustes analysis (GPA). These techniques have the same main objective, searching for a common structure, but they achieve it in different ways. This work evaluated 18 tomato genotypes, represented by individual plants in F2 and selfed families in F3. The same quantitative traits related to fruit quality were measured in both generations. The first two axes of the MFA represented 51.0% of the...
