The amalgamation of Gondwana and its subsequent fragmentation has been a subject of several studies over the past five decades, yet the very important question of the initial geometry of the supercontinent remains enigmatic. Current reconstruction models of the Indian Ocean are characterized by large gaps, overlaps and misfits of major structural and Cratonic bodies in their fit, and positions of tectonic blocks that are inconsistent with field observations, a phenomenon sustained by inadequate data, long standing debates and a lack of consensus on the nature of major structures and basins in the ocean. Instantaneous deformation and kinematics of the India-Australia Plate ArchiMer

Active intraplate deformation of the India-Australia Plate is now being captured by far-field global positioning system (GPS) measurements as well as measurements on a few islands located within the deforming zone itself. In this paper, we combine global and regional geodetic solutions with focal mechanisms of earthquakes to derive the present-day strain field of the India-Australia Plate. We first compile an updated catalogue of 131 Indian intraplate earthquakes (M > 5) spanning the period between the two Asian mega earthquakes of Assam 1897 and Sumatra 2004. PLACA: a white box for plate reconstruction and best-fit pole determination ArchiMer

PLACA was developed as a general purpose computer program for the earth scientist that has to manipulate the rigid plate tectonics theory, from the representation of plate reconstructions to the determination of best-fit poles using magnetic anomalies, fracture zones or volcanic alignments. In the "forward" mode PLACA has the features of most available demonstration software plus the ability of simulating mid-oceanic ridges (MOR) as dynamic segments that move with a fraction of the relative motion between two plates. The movement can be illustrated by the generation of flow lines, plate trajectories and/or pseudo-magnetic anomalies on the ocean floor. MORS ENVIRONNEMENT has developed for the University of Hawaii a new system, SI 4X1-3, for study of movement of tectonic plate. In a single unit are gathered an acoustic rangemeter, a data acquisition unit (for 8 external sensors), a long range telemetry, and a power pack for 6 to 10 years life. The surface unit is a standard 16 frequencies RM 201 "OCEANO INSTRUMENTS" rangemeter. The programmation, the data transmission control, and the exploitation of the measures are done with a compatible IBM/AT. An increasingly large number of macrodisjunct species is emerging from recent literature dealing with taxonomy and floristics of tropical bryophytes. This paper reviews present knowledge concerning Afro-American disjunctions in Hepaticae and seeks to interprete the data in the light of current phytogeographical theory. Numerous new floristic records and range extensions are given and some taxonomic novelties are proposed. For 35 Afro-American species known three main distribution types are recognized, each further subdivided: Tropical Afro-American (lowland, montane and the alpine element), Subtropical-Mediterranean (southern, wide element) and Temperate-Subantarctic (southern, wide element). Geology provides the basis for understanding distributions of faunas and floras in Southeast Asia but only via a complex interplay of plate movements, palaeogeography, ocean circulation and climate. Southeast Asia grew incrementally by the addition of continental fragments, mainly rifted from Australia, and added to the margins of Sundaland as a result of subduction. Sundaland was an almost permanent land area from the beginning of the Mesozoic. The addition of the continental fragments of Southwest Borneo and later East Java–West Sulawesi formed a much larger emergent land area by the Late Cretaceous that extended from Indochina to West Sulawesi.
