Effects of Aliskiren, an RAAS inhibitor, on a carrageenan-induced pleurisy model of rats Anais da ABC (AABC)

Abstract Our aim is to investigate the potentially preventive effects of Aliskiren in a carrageenan-induced lung pleurisy model and to compare the standard anti-inflammatory agents, indomethacin and dexamethasone. The pleurisy model was induced through the injection of carrageenan (0.2 ml-%2) into the pleural cavity. After the experiment, serum and lung tissues were collected and biochemical, molecular and pathological examinations were performed. In our study, pleural inflammation decreased superoxide dismutase activity and the glutathione level and increased the malondialdehyde level in the lung of rats, while Aliskiren increased the superoxide dismutase activity and glutathione level and decreased the malondialdehyde level. Methotrexate inhibits integrin adhesion molecules in the mouse model of pleurisy induced by carrageenan BABT

The aim of this work was to analyze the effect of methotrexate (MTX) upon leukocyte migration and expression of adhesion molecules CD11a/CD18 in the lung, 4 and 48 h after inflammation induction by carrageenan in mice. The results showed that MTX significantly decreased leukocyte influx and CD11a expression in the lung at 4 and 48 h of pleurisy (P < 0.01). MTX also inhibited CD18 expression at 4 h but not 48 h of pleurisy (P < 0.01). These results proved that MTX at the studied doses had important anti-inflammatory properties, acting primarily on leukocyte migration from the pleural cavity to the lung via inhibition of CD11a/CD18 expression in the mouse model of inflammation.

Nephroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects of aqueous extract of Melissa officinalis L. on acetaminophen-induced and pleurisy-induced lesions in rats BABT

This study assessed the bioactive properties of an aqueous extract of M. officinalis for its anti-inflammatory activity and its protection against hepatic and renal lesions induced by acetaminophen (APAP). Animals pre-treated with the crude extract in pleurisy induced by carrageenan showed a reduction in the amounts of exudate, in the numbers of leukocytes and polymorphonuclear cells. Intragastric administration of the extract for seven days prior to the APAP-induced lesion showed no protective effect on the liver. The treatment with the extract induced an increase of serum aspartate aminotransferase, indicating a rise of toxicity. Pharmacological study of anti-allergic activity of Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels BJMBR

Myrtaceae is a plant family widely used in folk medicine and Syzygium and Eugenia are among the most important genera. We investigated the anti-allergic properties of an aqueous leaf extract of Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels (SC). HPLC analysis revealed that hydrolyzable tannins and flavonoids are the major components of the extract. Oral administration of SC (25-100 mg/kg) in Swiss mice (20-25 g; N = 7/group) inhibited paw edema induced by compound 48/80 (50% inhibition, 100 mg/kg; P <= 0.05) and, to a lesser extent, the allergic paw edema (23% inhibition, 100 mg/kg; P <= 0.05).
