Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Schuh,B.R.F.; Lera,K.R.J.L.; Paula,L.A.O.; Prado,I.L.; Pagliosa,G.M..

Morés,N.; Barioni Junior,W.; Sobestansky,J.; Dalla Costa,O.A.; Piffer,I.A.; Paiva,D.P.; Guzzo,R.; Coimbra,J.B.S..

Carvalho,Eliane Maria de; Massarollo,Paulo Celso Bosco; Levin,Anna S.; Isern,Maria Rita Montenegro; Pereira,Wilson Leite; Abdala,Edson; Rossi,Flavia; Mies,Sérgio.
Nosocomial pneumonia is a common complication in patients on mechanical ventilation and results in significant mortality. Diagnosis of pneumonia in patients who are intubated and under mechanical ventilation is difficult, even with the aid of clinical, laboratorial, and endoscopic tests. The objective of this study was to compare three methods of tracheal sputum collection in patients with a clinical and radiological diagnosis of pneumonia. Twenty-two patients with a clinical diagnosis of liver disease were enrolled, 18 years of age or older, 13 males and nine females, who had been mechanically ventilated over an intubation period of 5.86 ± 4.62 days. These patients were being treated in intensive care unit (ICU) of the Liver Transplantdepartment....

Perinatal tuberculosis: a diagnostic challenge BJID
Souza,Edna Lúcia S. de; Moreira,Lícia Maria O.; Silva,Márcio Fernando.
Despite the high prevalence of tuberculosis in adults and children, the congenital and perinatal forms of tuberculosis are rare. In Brazil, there has been only one published case of congenital tuberculosis and two cases of the perinatal form of this disease. We report a case of perinatal tuberculosis presenting with pneumonia. Alcohol-acid-resistant bacilli were found in the gastric lavage. Diagnosis of this disease presentation requires a high index of suspicion.

Cost-effectiveness of linezolid versus vancomycin in mechanical ventilation-associated nosocomial pneumonia caused by methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus BJID
Machado,Adão R. L.; Arns,Clovis da Cunha; Follador,Wilson; Guerra,Aline.
Linezolid, an oxazolidinone-class antimicrobial agent, is a new drug; its use has frequently been questioned due to its high price. However, recent trials have demonstrated that the use of linezolid in mechanical ventilation-associated nosocomial pneumonia caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VAP-MRSA) may be justified due to its improved efficacy compared to vancomycin. Price and cost have different magnitudes, and clinical efficacy should always be considered in the decision-making process. Our objective was to determine whether linezolid treatment was more cost-effective than vancomycin for treating VAP-MRSA. METHODOLOGY: Elaboration of an economic model from a metanalysis of previous clinical trials comparing both drugs, through a...

Recurrent pneumonia caused by genetic immunodeficiency: a prophylactic and rehabilitative approach BJID
Leal,Renata Cristina de Angelo Calsaverini; Bertelli,Érika Cristina Pavarino; Soler,Zaida Aurora Sperli Geraldes.
Recurrent infections are a consequence of a series of genetic diseases characterized by deficiency in the immunological response. One of these diseases is the agammaglobulinemia, which is characterized by the basic defect in the maturation of lymphocytes B. The carrier of this kind of immunodeficiency, which is linked to the X (XLA) chromosome, has had primary pneumonias that have evolved into secondary pneumonias (chronic lungs with sequelae) after the third or fourth year of life. The clinical and rehabilitative quest for prophylaxis against the XLA immunodeficiency is accomplished in order to avoid the evolution of the bacterial infection into sequelae and loss of pulmonary function, which propitiates the recurrence of the disease and deteriorates the...
