Rates of calcium, yield and quality of snap bean Scientia Agricola
Favaro,Simone Palma; Braga Neto,José Antônio; Takahashi,Hideaki Wilson; Miglioranza,Édison; Ida,Elza Iouko.
Calcium ions (Ca) play an important role in many biochemical processes, delaying senescence and controlling physiological disorders in fruits and vegetables. The objective of this experiment was to analyze the effect of increasing calcium concentrations in snap beans. Snap bean cultivar UEL 1 was sown in sand containing 80 mg L-1 of calcium supplemented with nutrient solution, plus calcium at different contents: 0, 75, 150 and 300 mg L-1. Ca was mainly recovered in the shoots, followed by roots and pods. Calcium concentrations in the pods were 130, 259, 349 and 515 mg 100 g-1dry matter on a dry weight basis, in relation to the enhancement of calcium contents in the nutrient solution, respectively. A negative relationship between nitrogen content in the...

Mechanical and Structural Characteristics of Cement Mortars Blended with Locust Bean Pod Ash CIGR Journal
Akpenpuun, Timothy Denen; Akinyemi, Banjo; Olawale, Olamide; Aladegboye, Oluwasegun Joshua; Adesina, Olalere Israel.
This study looks at the effect of cement replacement with locust bean pod ash (LBPA) as a supplementary cementitious material on compressive strength of mortars. The fresh properties (workability, initial and final setting times), compressive strength at 7, 14, 21 and 28 days and microstructural analysis (SEM, EDS and XRD) were evaluated. LBPA were considered at replacement levels of 0, 10, 15, 20 and 30% of cement mass for preparation of the mortar samples. Workability of the cement mortars reduced as the content of LBPA increases while initial and final setting times increased in relation to increase in LBPA content in the matrix. An increase of about 79% in compressive strength at 7 days, 100% at 14 days, 147% at 21 days and 136% at 28 days were...

A lectin was isolated from the pod saline extract of Caesalpinia tinctoria by dialoconcentration on Centripep-10 and affinity chromatography on chitin column. The purified lectin was partially characterized with respect to its biochemical and structural properties. It contains 8.3 % of carbohydrate and exhibited an agglutinating activity against human erythrocytes (ABO groups). Its amino acid composition was characterized by a great number of acidic and hydrophobic residues and the estimated molecular mass was 12.5 kDa. The presence of only one N-terminal amino acid sequence (D¹-V-P-A-Y-V-Y-V-H-F10-G-F-G-E-E-H-R -D-V-F20-D), showed the homogeneity of the purified lectin. The far-ultraviolet circular dichroism (CD) spectrum of lectin indicated that it...
