Micromorphology in Mycale taxonomy (Mycalidae, Poecilosclerida, Demospongiae), with the description of two new micracanthoxea-bearing species Naturalis
Carballo, José Luis; Hajdu, Eduardo.
Two new species of Mycale with micracanthoxeas are described: Mycale (Aegogropila) lilianae n. sp., mainly characterized by the presence of toxas as large as 300 µm, and Mycale (Carmia) urizae n. sp., the first Mycale with micracanthoxeas described from Africa, characterized by the presence of anisochelae-III with the falx projecting downwards from the middle basal portion of the frontal alae of the head, and by the presence of two morphologically distinct size classes of toxas, with toxas-II being notably oxea-shaped. A discussion of all species of Mycale with micracanthoxeas is included. It is postulated that a comprehensive assessment of the distribution of this character, as well as of other micromorphological features of Mycale spicules, may shed...

Lissodendoryx species of the Indo-Malayan Archipelago (Demospongiae: Poecilosclerida) Naturalis
Hofman, Caroline C.; Soest, R.W.M. van.
A brief history of the genus Lissodendoryx Topsent, 1892 is given and the Indo-Malayan representatives are described based on material collected by the Siboga Expedition (1899-1900) and the Indonesian-Dutch Snellius II Expedition (1984-1985), on reexamination of previously described specimens from the area, and on the literature. Previously, ten species assigned to Lissodendoryx were reported from this area. Two of these, L. baculata Topsent, 1897 and L. tawiensis Wilson, 1925, do not conform to the presently employed definition of the genus Lissodendoryx. One, L. sinensis Brøndsted, 1934, is considered a junior synonym of L. ternatensis (Thiele, 1903). L. grata (Thiele, 1903) is a valid species of Lissodendoryx, with L. oxytes De Laubenfels, 1954 of the...

New species of Zyzzya, Cornulella, Damiria, and Acheliderma (Porifera: Poecilosclerida), with a review of fistular genera of Iophonidae Naturalis
Soest, R.W.M. van; Zea, S.; Kielman, M..
New sponge species belonging to the closely related fistular genera Zyzzya, Cornulella, Damiria, and Acheliderma are described from reef habitats off the coasts of Colombia, Bonaire and Curaçao in the southern Caribbean. With very few exceptions these sponges are small to tiny specimens inhabiting crevices and other cryptic habitats; some may be excavating. For comparison both published and unpublished material belonging to these genera from other parts of the world was examined, and this yielded several nomenclatorial changes and a further three new species from the Indian Ocean. The new species are: Zyzzya invemar (Caribbean), Cornulella santamartae (Caribbean), C. tyro (Seychelles), C. amirantensis (Seychelles), Damiria leonorae (Caribbean), D. toxifera...

Monanchora stocki n. sp. (Porifera, Poecilosclerida) from the Mid-Atlantic islands Naturalis
Soest, R.W.M. van.
A new species of the tropical-subtropical genus Monanchora Carter, 1883, is reported from São Tiago (Cape Verde Islands) and Ascension Island. The new species, M. stocki n. sp., is compared with related Atlantic and Indo-Pacific species, viz. Caribbean M. arbuscula (Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864) (senior synonym of Echinostylinos unguiferus De Laubenfels, 1953, and Monanchora barbadensis Hechtel, 1969), and Indo-Pacific M. unguiculata (Dendy, 1922). The new species stands out among Monanchora species by the longer and more pointed teeth of its spatulate-unguiferate chelae, which in extreme cases almost meet. The structure of the chelae of Monanchora species of various parts of its range are compared with that found in some other (? related) genera,...

The genus Batzella: a chemosystematic problem OMA
Van Soest, R.W.M.; Braekman, J.C.; Faulkner, D.J.; Hajdu, E.; Harper, M.K.; Vacelet, J..
Biogenetically unrelated cyclic guanidine alkaloids and pyrroloquinoline alkaloids have been reported from sponges assigned to the genus Batzella. These sponges have been assigned to this genus because of their possession of a simple complement of thin strongyles in irregular plumoreticulate arrangement. Cyclic guanidine alkaloids were first reported from an alleged axinellid species from the Caribbean, Ptilocaulis aff. P. spiculifer, and subsequently from a second Carribean specimen identified as Ptilocaulis spiculifer and at the same time from a Red Sea poecilosclerid, Hemimycale sp. Closely related compounds were described from a Caribbean specimen identified...

Mycale (Aegogropila) kolletae sp. n. from the SE Atlantic, with comments on the species of Mycale Gray with raphidotoxas (Mycalidae, Demospongiae, Porifera) Zoologia
Carballo,José Luis; Hajdu,Eduardo.
A new species of Mycale Gray, 1867 bearing raphidotoxas is described from the Namibian coast (SE Atlantic). Mycale (Aegogropila) kolletae sp. n. is characterized by having raphidotoxas up to 590 µm long, three distinct categories of anisochelae, two categories of sigmas, very small raphides, and most of all, by toxas serrated in an unusual pattern (on the inner parts of all three bends). Mycale magnirhaphidifera Van Soest, 1984 is redescribed from the Brazilian coast, based on a population from the northern São Paulo State coastline. The remaining two species with raphidotoxas, viz. Mycale rhaphidotoxa Hentschel, 1912 and M. mannarensis Thomas, 1968 are revised. Levi's (1963) record of Carmia macilenta (Bowerbank, 1866) for the South African coast was...
