The oyster culture basin of Marennes - Oléron is characterized by the tastiness of its oysters and the good quality of its waters, and thus of its shellfish. On that account, the quasi-totality of the production areas are ranked A for non-burrowing shellfishes, thus confirming the privileged character of the basin. This microbiological and chemical quality contributing to the reputation of the basin's shellfish farms needs to be preserved. The microbiological classification of the Marennes-Oléron shellfish farming area (according to Council Directive 91/492/EEC) let appear sorne periodically polluted spots. A research of the potentiel sources has been conducted around these spots. Twelve points were sampled during a year with faecal coliforms and streptococcus contamination level in water (and shellfich when possible). Several microbiological pollution sources were found, in the Seudre estuary (umstream) and in Oléron island : lack of, or ineffective sewage systems, cattle farming without convenient manure treatrrtent, and so on .. Recommendations are given to improve this situation. |
