Changes in the amount of soluble carbohydrates and polyphenols contents during decomposition of Montrichardia arborescens (L.) Schott Acta Amazonica
Cunha-Santino,Marcela Bianchessi da; Pacobahyba,Lucilia Dias; Bianchini Jr,Irineu.
This study describes the aerobic and anaerobic decay of soluble carbohydrates (CH) and polyphenols (PH) during decomposition of Montrichardia arborescens. Plant and water samples were collected in the Cantá stream (2º 49' 11" N and 60º 40' 24" W), Roraima, Brazil. Decomposition chambers with plant fragments and stream water were incubated. Particulate organic matter was separated from dissolved organic matter and concentrations of CH and PH were determined. The results were fitted to 1st order kinetics models. CH and PH comprised a labile fraction (LCH and LPH) and a refractory fraction (RCH and RPH). The global coefficient associated with LCH weight loss was 1.4 times higher under aerobic conditions (3.4 day-1) higher than for anaerobic conditions. On the...

Antidiarrheal effect of extract from the bark of Combretum leprosum in mice Anais da ABC (AABC)
CAVALCANTI,PAULO M.S.; MARTINS,MARIA DO CARMO C.; NUNES,PAULO H.M.; ALVES FILHO,FRANCISCO C.; SILVA,JANYERSON D.P.; CAVALCANTI,SUZANA M.G..
Abstract This study investigated the effects of the ethanolic extract from the bark of Combretum leprosum (ECL) on intestinal transit and castor-oil induced diarrhea in mice. The oral administration of ECL (750 and 1000 mg/kg) slowed intestinal transit (ID50 of 455 mg/kg). The ECL (250-1000 mg/kg) reduced castor-oil induced diarrhea, in a time- and dose-dependent manner (p < 0.05). To determine if antidiarrheal effect of ECL involves α2-adrenergic or opioid receptor activation, the mice were pretreated with antagonists of these receptors, yohimbine or naloxone respectively. None of these drugs inhibited the antidiarrheal effect of ECL. To test if antidiarrheal effect of ECL is due to an antisecretory action, we realized the enteropooling assay on rats....

Polyphenols and Red Wine as Antioxidants against Peroxynitrite and other Oxidants Biol. Res.
VALDEZ,LAURA B; ÁLVAREZ,SILVIA; ZAOBORNYJ,TAMARA; BOVERIS,ALBERTO.
The antioxidant capacity of polyphenols (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin and myricetin, and of different types of red wines (Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and blended wine) was evaluated by three assays. (a) NADH oxidation by peroxynitrite (ONOO-): the ONOO- scavenging activity was higher for myricetin (IC50=35 µM) than for (+)-catechin (IC50=275 µM) and (-)-epicatechin (IC50=313 µM). (b) Peroxynitrite initiated chemiluminescence in rat liver homogenate: (-)-epicatechin (IC50=7.0 µM) and (+)-catechin (IC50=13 µM) were more potent than myricetin (IC50=20 µM) in inhibiting the chemiluminescence signal. (c) Lucigenin chemiluminescence in aortic rings: (-)-epicatechin (IC50=15 µM) and (+)-catechin (IC50=18 µM) showed higher antioxidant capacity than myricetin...

A Pyranine based Procedure for Evaluation of the Total Antioxidant Potential (TRAP) of Polyphenols: A Comparison with closely related Methodologies Biol. Res.
CAMPOS,ANA MARÍA; SOTOMAYOR,CARLOS PATRICIO; PINO,EDUARDO; LISSI,EDUARDO.
A novel procedure for the evaluation of total reactive antioxidant potentials (TRAP) is described. The method is based on the measurement of the bleaching of pyranine by peroxyl radicals. The addition of the antioxidants produces a clear induction time whose magnitude is directly related to the antioxidant concentration. A comparison of the values obtained with those reported employing closely related methodologies shows that the results are significantly affected by the substrate employed to monitor the steady state free radical concentration. Possible sources of this dependence are discussed

Red Wine administration to Apolipoprotein E-deficient Mice reduces their Macrophage-derived Extracellular Matrix Atherogenic Properties Biol. Res.
KAPLAN,MARIELLE; AVIRAM,MICHAEL.
Proteoglycans (PGs) from the arterial extracellular matrix (ECM) contribute to the trapping of LDL and oxidized LDL (Ox-LDL) in the arterial wall, a phenomenon called "lipoprotein retention". Moreover, we have shown that subsequent to their binding to the matrix, LDL and Ox-LDL are taken up by macrophages. Oxidative stress significantly increases macrophage secretion of ECM-PGs, lipoprotein binding to the ECM and the uptake of ECM-retained lipoproteins by macrophages. The aim of the present study was to determine whether red wine administration to atherosclerotic mice would affect their peritoneal macrophage-derived extracellular matrix properties, such as the glycosaminoglycan content and the ability to bind LDL. In addition, we questioned the ability of...

Influence of phenolic compounds on the growth and arginine deiminase system in a wine lactic acid bacterium BJM
Alberto,María R.; Manca de Nadra,María C.; Arena,Mario E..
The influence of seven phenolic compounds, normally present in wine, on the growth and arginine deiminase system (ADI) of Lactobacillus hilgardii X1B, a wine lactic acid bacterium, was established. This system provides energy for bacterial growth and produces citrulline that reacts with ethanol forming the carcinogen ethyl carbamate (EC), found in some wines. The influence of phenolic compounds on bacterial growth was compound dependent. Growth and final pH values increased in presence of arginine. Arginine consumption decreased in presence of protocatechuic and gallic acids (31 and 17%, respectively) and increased in presence of quercetin, rutin, catechin and the caffeic and vanillic phenolic acids (between 10 and 13%, respectively). ADI enzyme activities...
