Correlation between geography and cytogenetic diversity in Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) cultivars in Iran Acta Botanica
Sheidai,Masoud; Kolahizadeh,Sakineh; Noormohammadi,Zahra; Azani,Nasim; Nikoo,Mehrnoosh.
Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is an important horticultural plant with several cultivated forms planted in different regions of Iran. Due to its economic importance, studies have been carried out to illustrate the genetic diversity at the chromosomal and molecular levels in different pomegranate cultivars growing in this region. This study analyzed chromosome pairing and B-chromosomes of 21 pomegranate cultivars and tried to investigate the effects of geographical parameters like altitude and longitude as well as elevation and the mean annual rainfall on cytogenetic diversity of these taxa. An ANOVA test revealed the presence of a significant difference for chiasmata and chromosome pairing among the cultivars, indicating their genetic differences. A...

Evaluation of an electronic nose system for characterization of pomegranate varieties CIGR Journal
Sanaeifar, Alireza; Mohtasebi, Seyed Saeid; Ghasemi-Varnamkhasti, Mahdi; Mohammad Shafie, Mohammad.
The electronic nose (e-nose) would simulate the human sense (smell) to identify and realize the complex aromas by employing a chemical sensors array. One of the most common sensors used in electronic nose systems are metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors. In this research, a low cost e-nose system based on six metal oxide semi-conductor (MOS) sensors as a non-destructive instrument for recognition pomegranate varieties is investigated. Principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) techniques are used for this purpose. The proposed e-nose has a capability of demonstrating a clear difference in aroma fingerprint of pomegranate by PCA and LDA analysis. Using LDA analysis, it is possible to identify and to categorize the...

The Coruh Valley, located in Northeastern Turkey, is one of the most important centers of diversity in pomegranate in Turkey. In this study, we attempted to characterize 19 promising pomegranate genotypes originating from the Coruh Valley in using fluorescent dye AFLP markers and capillary electrophoresis. Four AFLP primer combinations were used, generating a total of 297 fragments, 213 of which were polymorphic (73.0%). Resolving powers of the AFLP primers ranged from 0.700 to 1.018, with a total of 3.440, while polymorphism information contents ranged from 0.707 to 0.837 with an average of 0.764. UPGMA clustering of the genotypes showed two major groups. Most of the fruit characteristics of the genotypes within the same group were variable. Therefore,...

Punica granatum L., locally known as romanzeira, is native to Asia but found throughout Brazil. P. granatum is used for treating inflammatory, infectious and respiratory diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the chromatography and genotoxicity of an aqueous extract of P. granatum (pomegranate) fruit peel using the Allium cepa L. test. The experiment set-up entailed 7 treatments: T1-distilled water, T2-tea 5 g.L-1, T3-tea 10 g.L-1, T4-glyphosate at 9.6%, T5-glyphosate with subsequent recovery in distilled water, T6-glyphosate with subsequent recovery in tea 5 g.L-1 and T7-glyphosate with subsequent recovery in tea 10 g.L-1. The rootlets were collected and fixed in ethanol:acetic acid (3:1) for 24 hours, then stored in 70% ethanol under...

Comparison of the total phenolic content, total anthocyanin content and antioxidant activity of polyphenol-rich fruits grown in Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Fredes,Carolina; Montenegro,Gloria; Zoffoli,Juan Pablo; Santander,Francisca; Robert,Paz.
In the last 10 years, interest in research on polyphenol-rich fruit species has increased due to the potential health benefits of these species, mainly attributed to their high anthocyanin content and antioxidant activity. Six polyphenol-rich fruit species (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, pomegranates and maqui berries) were harvested at the same maturity stage during the same growing season and were compared according to their total phenolic (Folin-Ciocalteu method) and total anthocyanin (pH differential method) contents and antioxidant activity using ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP assay) and 2,2-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging capacity methods. With the results of this study, the polyphenolic status of the...

Effect of active antimicrobial films on the growth of pathogenic bacteria in Mantı Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
UZUNLU,Sinan.
Abstract The current study assessed antimicrobial films for use in active food packaging. Mantı, a tortellini-like Turkish food, was packaged with antimicrobial films to extend refrigerated storage time at 4 °C. Polycaprolactone (PCL) was separately incorporated with cinnamaldehyde (CNMA) and pomegranate methanolic extract (PME) to form antimicrobial diffusion films for use against two common food-poisoning bacteria, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, and the mantı pieces were separately inoculated with 5 log concentrations of both types of bacteria. The films and mantı were then inserted in polyethylene bags, which were filled with 100% N2 gas and monitored at 4 °C for 28 days. The results clearly show that both a low temperature storage (4 °C)...

Antioxidant activity, cito- and phototoxicity of pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) seed pulp extract Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Pedriali,Carla Aparecida; Fernandes,Adjaci Uchoa; Santos,Patricia Araujo dos; Silva,Moisés Melquíades da; Severino,Divinomar; Silva,Mauricio Baptista da.
In the present work, a hydroethanolic extract was prepared from the entire seeds of pomegranate [Punica granatum L. (Punicaceae)] with Cachaça, a distilled Brazilian alcoholic beverage, protected from light for an 80-hour period. The desorption curve of the seeds, presented an optimal time extraction of approximately 24 hours. The extract was divided into two samples: protected from light, (Extract 1), or not, (Extract 2). The extracts were characterized by UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy, quantification of total phenolics by the Folin-Ciocalteu method, and the antioxidant activity was determined by the DPPH quenching method. Extract 2 presented 9.8% less total polyphenols than Extract 1. The pomegranate seeds extract lost 79% of its antioxidant...

A Non-Hypothetical and Incentive Compatible Method for Estimating Consumer Willingness-to-Pay for a Novel Functional Food: The Case of Pomegranates AgEcon
McAdams, Callie P.; Palma, Marco A.; Ishdorj, Ariun; Hall, Charles R..
A preference and valuation mechanism that compared results of an experimental auction and nonhypothetical preference rankings was developed and used to elicit preferences for pomegranate products from a representative sample of shoppers in Texas. Familiarity with pomegranate products increased willingness-to-pay (WTP) for pomegranates, as did tasting and providing additional information on the health benefits of the products. Ready-to-eat and juice products were preferred to whole fruit products. Subjects did not indicate an increased WTP for Texas varieties over California Wonderful pomegranate based on auction bids but indicated a preference for one Texas variety in the nonhypothetical ranking procedure; thus, the auction results and nonhypothetical...
