The porcellanid crab Petrolisthes hastatus Stimpson, 1858, has been traditionally viewed as a highly variable species with a wide distribution in the West Pacific. For more than a century there has been taxonomic confusion of this species with morphologically similar taxa, some of which were synonymized with Stimpson's taxon. We redefine P. hastatus, resurrect P. inermis as a valid species, discuss the status of P. tenkatei De Man, 1893, and describe a new species as P. elegantissimus from Indonesia. A new species of porcellanid crab, Polyonyx vermicola, belonging to the P. sinensis group is described from Selangor, Peninsular Malaysia. The species is an obligate commensal of tubes of the chaetopterid worm Sasekumaria selangora Rullier, 1976 (Polychaeta). Polyonyx vermicola is differentiated from all congeners by its small size, possessing a more rectangular carapace, proportionately longer carpus on the larger cheliped, strongly gaping cheliped fingers, the tips of which are turned outwards, the outer surface of each cheliped fingers lined with a row of small granules, and having the ventral margin of the third ambulatory propodus armed with strong spinules. The crabs were hand-caught by SCUBA divers during the daytime. The greatest carapace width (CW) was measured, and the sex and developmental stage were identified for each crab. The purpose of the present study is to examine the population structure and the breeding period of Pachycheles monilifer (Dana, 1852) inhabiting sabellariid worm reefs in the littoral of São Paulo State coast. The specimens were obtained at 2-month intervals from September/94 to July/95. The study sites were located at the rocky shores of Tenorio and Paranapuã Beaches. Individuals sampled showed a total averaged 4.4 ± 1.4 mm carapace length. Ovigerous females were more frequent in September. Despite clear differences regarding the arrangement of these sabellariid colonies, they are extremely important to the establishment and maintenance of P. monilifer.
