Effect of Ethanol Vapor on Ripening of Tomato CIGR Journal
Roy, Joyanta Kumar.
Freshly harvested tomatoes were subjected to different ethanol vapor treatments at 4 ml/kg, 6 ml/kg and 8 ml/kg in closed bucket for 6 hr, 9 hr and 12 hr at ambient temperature (26.84±3.0ºC) to investigate the effect of ethanol vapor on physico-chemical changes in summer variety tomato over storage period. Results revealed that ethanol vapor treatments significantly prolonged the postharvest life of tomato by inhibiting ripening process. At the end of storage period, T6 treatment (6 ml/kg of ethanol for 12 hr) was found to be effective to maintain weight, firmness and attractive color attributes of tomatoes. On the other hand, bioactive compounds, such as lycopene (4.65 mg/100g), β-Carotene (2.91 mg/100g) and ascorbic acid (27.5 mg/100g) were found to be...

The influence of the broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. itálica)fill weigth on postharvest quality Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Carvalho,Paulo de Tarso; Clemente,Edmar.
Broccoli is a vegetable of important economic value as well as a source of vitamin C and anticarcinogenic property substances. Although it can be minimally processed, this vegetable presents fast senescence, characterized by yellowing, loss of turgescence, development of off-odors, increase in enzymatic activity and reduction of nutritional value. Among the frequently used techniques that can extend the shelf-life of minimally processed broccoli, we have the use of cool storage and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP). Several factors interfere in the efficiency of MAP, influencing the speed and intensity of the changes on atmosphere composition. This work aimed to study the influence of the amount packaged broccoli on its postharvest quality, when stored...

Brackmann,Auri; Thewes,Fabio Rodrigo; Anese,Rogerio de Oliveira; Both,Vanderlei; Linke Junior,Wanderlei; Schultz,Erani Eliseu.
Growth regulators are used in the production of apples worldwide, especially to extend the harvest period and maintain postharvest quality. This study aimed to investigate the effects of applying aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) in isolation as well as in combination with other growth regulators and postharvest techniques on the harvest quality and storage potential of ‘Brookfield’ apples (Malus domestica), a ‘Gala’ strain. Fruit receiving AVG only had the highest starch content and the highest titratable acidity at harvest. After 8 months of storage, the AVG + 1-MCP (1-methylcyclopropene) and AVG + ABS (ethylene absorption) conserved higher flesh firmness than to all the other treatments. Naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) application induced ACC oxidase enzyme...

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of CPPU on postharvest quality of ‘Kaek Dum’ papaya fruit. Fruits at the half-ripe stage were selected to test a dipped treatment with 0, 2 and 4 mg/l CPPU for 60 min. Then, all the samples were stored at 12°C (80-85% RH) for 15 days. The results showed that the fruit dipped in 4 mg/L CPPU had lowest firmness and the peel and pulp color development occurred rapidly than those in the other treatments. No differences in weight loss and membrane degradation when indicated by electrolyte leakage were found between treatments. The results indicated that such a CPPU treatment in papaya fruit may be accelerated fruit ripening.
