The purpose of the present study was to translate and adapt the Berg balance scale, an instrument for functional balance assessment, to Brazilian-Portuguese and to determine the reliability of scores obtained with the Brazilian adaptation. Two persons proficient in English independently translated the original scale into Brazilian-Portuguese and a consensus version was generated. Two translators performed a back translation. Discrepancies were discussed and solved by a panel. Forty patients older than 65 years and 40 therapists were included in the cultural adaptation phase. Body stability is controlled by the postural system and can be affected by fear and anxiety. Few studies have addressed freezing posture in psychiatric disorders. The purpose of the present study was to assess posturographic behavior in 30 patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD) and 35 without SAD during presentation of blocks of pictures with different valences. Neutral images consisted of objects taken from a catalog of pictures, negative images were mutilation pictures and anxiogenic images were related to situations regarding SAD fears. While participants were standing on a force platform, similar to a balance, displacement of the center of pressure in the mediolateral and anteroposterior directions was measured. During sessions of physical therapy, a tetraplegic patient with incomplete spinal cord section at C5 level was found to have changes in the posture post intervention. The therapy consisted of tactile stimulation in specific points of his body to genérate reflex patterns of muscle activation (Vojta therapy principies). To quantify these postural changes in the subject, the center of pressure displacement in sitting posture was measured. An analysis of the changes observed in postural control through fourteen months of follow-up is presented and discussed in the report bellow.
