Due to success of air-jet application in food and agricultural sciences, a new method was invented based on the impingement jets in order to eliminate a number of problems present in mechanical methods of removing sunflower seeds from the head. When the sunflower head had linear velocity and the nozzle was fixed, the effects of the seeds’ location on the sunflower head, reservoir pressure, nozzle diameter, linear velocity of the sunflower head, and the distance between the nozzle outlet and the surface of the sunflower head on its removed area were examined. The regions removed by the impingement of the air-jet were photographed and the area of the removed regions was calculated based on the image processing technique. The results showed that the area of... |

AbstractGrading potatoes by size is an important operation for preparing tubers for seed and for commercial purposes. If potatoes were sold after grading, this would be beneficial to both producers and consumers. Since mechanical graders are not locally available, potatoes are graded, when necessary, by hand. This is a time consuming, costly, and inefficient method. This work concerns the development of a potato-grading machine for small-scale farmers. The grader consisted of a hopper, grading unit, prime mover and catchment tray fitted on a frame. The grader was made of locally available materials to keep the cost low. The grading unit was made up of plastic oil container, hopper and catchment tray made up of mild steel sheet and the frame was made up of... |

In this study, at first the shear parameters including the maximum shear force, shear strength, shear energy and power consumption of canola stem were calculated through force-deformation curve; and then these mechanical properties were determined and predicted using artificial neural network. For the tests, testing machine Instron (Model Santam STM-5) with 50 N load cell was used. Stems were cut at 3 diameter levels (1 to 3, 3 to 5 and more than 5 mm), 3 cutting speed levels (75, 115 and 150 mm/min ), 3 cutting angles (0°, 30° and 60°) and three replicates. Cutting parameters including maximum cutting force, shear strength; cutting energy; consumed power and cutting work were examined. Tests lasted for each stem until the full cut. Data... |
