Maternal and fetal effects after inhalation of the herbicide flumetralin Biological Sciences
Boneventi, Priscila; Baroneza, José Eduardo; Moreira, Camila Queiroz; Santos, Debora Cristina D. Meirelles dos; Salles, Maria José Sparça.
Farm workers at Brazilian tobacco plantations are frequently exposed to toxic chemicals and eventually became contaminated with these products. Flumetralin is a inhibitor of axillary bud growth on tobacco and the effects of gestational exposure should be investigated since many pesticides cross the placental barrier and cause birth defects. The aim of this study was to investigate maternal and fetal effects caused by inhalation of Flumetralin. Pregnant Swiss mice inhaled Flumetralin for 10 or 20 minutes on the seventh day of pregnancy. On the 18th day, animals were euthanized and subjected to laparotomy for removal of the uterus and embryos. The uterus was weighed and the embryos were examined. Fetuses of both treatments showed visceral changes in the...

Comparative analysis of two different models of swimming applied to pregnant rats born small for pregnant age Anais da ABC (AABC)
CORVINO,SILVANA B.; DAMASCENO,DÉBORA C.; SINZATO,YURI K.; NETTO,ALINE O.; MACEDO,NATHÁLIA C.D.; ZAMBRANO,ELENA; VOLPATO,GUSTAVO T..
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to compare two models of swimming applied to pregnant rats born small for pregnancy age (SPA). Diabetes was chemically induced in adult female rats to develop an inadequate intrauterine environment, leading to birth of a SPA offspring. In adulthood, the female SPA rats were mated and submitted to different swimming programs. The exercise program 1 (Ex1) consisted of swimming for 15 minutes, followed by 15 minutes of rest and another 15 minutes of swimming, 3 days a week before and during pregnancy. Another program (Ex2) was applied during 60 minutes uninterrupted a day, 6 days/week during pregnancy. The pregnant rats presented no interference on body weight and glycemia. The rats submitted to Ex2 model showed decreased...

The phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase and mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways mediate β cell growth, proliferation, survival and death. We investigated whether protein restriction during pregnancy alters islet morphometry or the expression and phosphorylation of several proteins involved in the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase and mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways. As controls, adult pregnant and non-pregnant rats were fed a normal-protein diet (17%). Pregnant and non-pregnant rats in the experimental groups were fed a low-protein diet (6%) for 15 days. Low protein diet during pregnancy increased serum prolactin level, reduced serum corticosterone concentration and the expression of both protein kinase B/AKT1 (AKT1) and p70 ribosomal protein S6...

Evaluation of anaerobic threshold in non-pregnant and pregnant rats Anais da ABC (AABC)
NETTO,ALINE OLIVEIRA; MACEDO,NATHÁLIA C.D.; GALLEGO,FRANCIANE Q.; SINZATO,YURI K.; VOLPATO,GUSTAVO T.; DAMASCENO,DÉBORA C..
ABSTRACT Several studies present different methodologies and results about intensity exercise, and many of them are performed in male rats. However, the impact of different type, intensity, frequency and duration of exercise on female rats needs more investigation. From the analysis of blood lactate concentration during lactate minimum test (LacMin) in the swimming exercise, the anaerobic threshold (AT) was identified, which parameter is defined as the transition point between aerobic and anaerobic metabolism. LacMin test is considered a good indicator of aerobic conditioning and has been used in prescription of training in different exercise modalities. However, there is no evidence of LacMin test in female rats. The objective was to determine AT in...

Chronic stress effects on the apoptotic index of the adrenal cortex of pregnant rats Biocell
Bozzo,Andrea; Soñez,Carlos Alberto; Mugnaini,María Teresa; Pastorino,Isabel Cecilia; Rolando,Alicia Nélida; Romanini,María Cristina; Gauna,Héctor Fernando.
Chronic stress by immobilization during gestation can alter several mechanisms that maintain homeostasis in adrenal gland. The aim of this work was to quantify the apoptotic index of adrenal cortex during mid-pregnancy and to prove cytological characteristics by electron microscopy. The apoptotic index did not present significant differences between the adrenal cortex areas of control and experimental rats in any of the three ages studied. The day of gestation influenced significantly on the apoptotic index in both groups. This index increased as gestation progressed. It may be concluded that chronic stress by immobilization might induce the increase of apoptotic index in adrenal cortex as gestation progresses which might be related variations of plasmatic...

IGF2 expression in blood is not associated with its imprinting status in healthy pregnant Chinese women Biol. Res.
Ru-Fei,Gao; Xue-Qing,Liu; Ying-Xiong,Wang; Xue-Mei,Chen; Yu-Bin,Ding; Jun-Lin,He.
Loss of Imprinting (LOI) of IGF2 and over-expressed IGF2 are associated with tumorigenesis. Our previous epidemiological study found a relatively high frequency of IGF2 LOI in healthy mid-gestation pregnant women. The aim of this study is to determine whether the expression of IGF2 is associated with its imprinting status in healthy Chinese pregnant women. The IGF2 imprinting status of 300 pregnant women was analyzed. 20 cases of IGF2 LOI and 20 cases of IGF2 retention of imprinting (ROI) were selected randomly for IGF2 expression analysis. The expression pattern of IGF2 between the group with IGF2 ROI and group with IGF2 LOI in healthy Chinese pregnant women was evaluated by real time PCR and western blot. The result showed no significant differences...

A model for the study of skeletal anomalies in rat fetuses BABT
Effting,Cristiane; Paula,Daniel Jesus de; Nunes Junior,Guilhermino Pereira.
The aim of this study was to validate a model of skeletal anomalies in rat fetuses by the administration of ketoconazole (80 mg/kg) to pregnant rats during organogenesis. Bones of the head, trunk and anterior and posterior limbs were examined for detection of anomalies. Statistical differences regarding the number of fetuses and postimplantation resorptions, and fetal and placental weight were significant. The frequency of skeletal anomalies in the head, trunk, and anterior and posterior limbs in the ketoconazole-treated group were also significant when compared to the control group. It could be concluded that the model suggested was valid for study of skeletal anomalies and abnormal bones development in rat fetuse, in spite of the loss of fetuses due to...

Influence of tetracycline in the hepatic and renal development of rat's offspring BABT
Machado,Ana Lourdes da Silva; Brandão,Adriana Aigotti Haberbeck; Silva,Cláudia Maria de Oliveira Monteiro da; Rocha,Rosilene Fernandes da.
This study aimed on evaluating the possible effects of tetracycline administered to rats on the tenth day of pregnancy, on kidney and liver development of their offspring. The liver showed vacuolization, necrosis, inflammation and sinusoidal dilatations, more evident in the newborn. Mitosis, early increase of Kupffer cells population and hipertrophy of hepatocytes with greater synthesis of glycogen were present on the tenth and twentieth days of life. The kidney showed slight tubular vacuolizations and necrosis, more proeminent in the newborn, as well as signs of tubular regeneration on the tenth and twentieth days. These results suggested that the organs studied went through several transitory morphological changes during development but presented signs...

Pre-eclampsia: a life-threatening pregnancy syndrom BABT
Brazdova,Andrea; Keprova,Alena; Zidkova,Jarmila; Madar,Jindrich.
Pre-eclampsia is a serious pathological state affecting 5-10% of pregnant women. Currently, it is diagnosed in the second half of pregnancy, particularly after the 20th week. Symptoms mostly correspond to the changes of blood vessels and kidneys. The severity of pre-eclampsia is proportional to symptomatic manifestations, thus the more symptoms present, the higher is of pre-eclampsia development. Although there are several studies dealing with pre-eclampsia pathology, the complete etiology is still unknown. In this review paper, several theories are presented and discussed.
