Animal Disease Pre-Event Preparedness versus Post-Event Response: When is it Economic to Protect? AgEcon
Elbakidze, Levan; McCarl, Bruce A..
We examine the economic tradeoff between the costs of pre-event preparedness and post-event response to the potential introduction of an infectious animal disease. In a simplified case study setting, we examine the conditions for optimality of an enhanced pre-event detection system considering various characteristics of a potential infectious cattle disease outbreak, costs of postevent response actions. We show that the decision to invest in pre-event preparedness activities depends on such factors as probability of disease introduction, disease spread rate, relative costs, ancillary benefits, and effectiveness of mitigation strategies.

Felértékelni az agrárgazdaságot? AgEcon
Romany, Pal.
A mezőgazdaság a pénzügyi szektortól eltérően nemcsak profitot, hanem új értéket is képes létrehozni. -------------------------------------------- Unlike the financial sector, agriculture can not only produce profit but can also create new value. Despite its depressing issues, Hungarian agro-economy is still in possession of the basic resources – land and water assets – which can be the basis for alleviating problems of the national economy....

The persistence of drought impacts across growing seasons: a dynamic stochastic analysis AgEcon
Peck, Dannele E.; Adams, Richard M..
Agricultural producers throughout much of the United States experienced one of the most severe droughts in the last 100 years during the years 1999-2006. The prolonged nature of this drought highlights a need to better understand the impacts and management of drought across growing seasons, rather than just within a growing season. Producers express specific concern about the tendency of drought impacts to persist even after drought itself has subsided. The persistence of drought impacts has received limited attention in the economics literature. The objectives of this study are two-fold: 1) to determine whether inter-year dynamics, in the form of agronomic constraints and financial flows, can cause persistence of a drought's impact in years subsequent...

Coping with climate risk in agriculture needs farmer oriented research and extension policies Scientia Agricola
Stigter,Kees.
The first necessary change for agrometeorology, in generally lower (external) input parts of agriculture in developing countries, is on research and extension. They have to refocus to preparedness for risks and uncertainties of local farming systems in need of support in four defined directions of prioritization, emphasis depending on the farming system concerned. These are (i) extreme events and their consequences caused by meteorological and climatological disasters on all time scales, including related aversion attempts; (ii) pests and diseases, including countervailing measures; (iii) trying to use beneficial climate and weather and (iv) applications of agrometeorological services. The second necessary change for such agrometeorology is participation...
