Preconditioning of Physalis angulata L. to maintain the viability of seeds Acta Amazonica
Souza,Manuela Oliveira de; Souza,Cíntia Luiza Mascarenhas de; Barroso,Natalia dos Santos; Pelacani,Claudinéia Regina.
The important chemical and food properties conferred to P. angulata make it necessary to conduct studies in seed conservation. This study evaluated the effect of priming of P. angulata seed for varying periods and storage conditions. Lots of seeds were stored in a refrigerator and in ambient conditions for up to 24 months. Some of these seeds were primed before or after storage. The results show that there was variation in moisture content. The germination rate and germination rate index remained high in ambient conditions when primed up to 24 months.

Is the enhancement produced by priming in cottonseeds maintained during storage? Bragantia
Toselli,María Eugenia; Casenave,Ester Celina.
The objective of this study was to evaluate: a) whether the effects of hydropriming and osmopriming in manitol on cottonseed germination are maintained during their storage; b) whether the behavior of the treated seeds -in storage- depends on the type of priming substrate used; c) whether seeds from different harvest years [age] have a similar response. The effects of 16 h of hydropriming and 41 h in mannitol were tested at 18 and 25 ºC on the velocity of germination, standard germination and the vigor in cottonseeds from the 2007 and 2008 harvests, and within 0, 6 and 12 months of postpriming storage. The enhancement produced by the priming treatments used remained at least for 6 months in the case of hydropriming and 12 months for osmopriming in...

Relative contribution of expectancy and immediate arousal to the facilitatory effect of an auditory accessory stimulus BJMBR
Del-Fava,F.; Ribeiro-do-Valle,L.E..
An auditory stimulus speeds up a digital response to a subsequent visual stimulus. This facilitatory effect has been related to the expectancy and the immediate arousal that would be caused by the accessory stimulus. The present study examined the relative contribution of these two influences. In a first and a third experiment a simple reaction time task was used. In a second and fourth experiment a go/no-go reaction time task was used. In each of these experiments, the accessory stimulus preceded the target stimulus by 200 ms for one group of male and female volunteers (G Fix). For another group of similar volunteers (G Var) the accessory stimulus preceded the target stimulus by 200 ms in 25% of the trials, by 1000 ms in 25% of the trials and was not...

Priming effects of a peripheral visual stimulus in simple and go/no-go tasks BJMBR
Squella,S.A.F.; Ribeiro-do-Valle,L.E..
The early facilitatory effect of a peripheral spatially visual prime stimulus described in the literature for simple reaction time tasks has been usually smaller than that described for complex (go/no-go, choice) reaction time tasks. In the present study we investigated the reason for this difference. In a first and a second experiment we tested the participants in both a simple task and a go/no-go task, half of them beginning with one of these tasks and half with the other one. We observed that the prime stimulus had an early effect, inhibitory for the simple task and facilitatory for the go/no-go task, when the task was performed first. No early effect appeared when the task was performed second. In a third and a fourth experiment the participants were,...

Absence of peripheral blood mononuclear cells priming in hemodialysis patients BJMBR
Santos,B.C.; Starobinas,N.; Barbuto,J.A.M.; Russo,M.; Schor,N..
As a consequence of the proinflammatory environment occurring in dialytic patients, cytokine overproduction has been implicated in hemodialysis co-morbidity. However, there are discrepancies among the various studies that have analyzed TNF-alpha synthesis and the presence of peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) priming in this clinical setting. We measured bioactive cytokine by the L929 cell bioassay, and evaluated PBMC TNF-alpha production by 32 hemodialysis patients (HP) and 51 controls. No difference in TNF-alpha secretion was observed between controls and HP (859 ± 141 vs 697 ± 130 U/10(6) cells). Lipopolysaccharide (5 µg/ml) did not induce any further TNF-alpha release, showing no PBMC priming. Paraformaldehyde-fixed HP PBMC were not cytotoxic to...

Facilitatory effects of an auditory warning stimulus in a visual location identification task and a visual shape identification task BJMBR
Bueno,V.F.; Ribeiro-do-Valle,L.E..
The occurrence of a weak auditory warning stimulus increases the speed of the response to a subsequent visual target stimulus that must be identified. This facilitatory effect has been attributed to the temporal expectancy automatically induced by the warning stimulus. It has not been determined whether this results from a modulation of the stimulus identification process, the response selection process or both. The present study examined these possibilities. A group of 12 young adults performed a reaction time location identification task and another group of 12 young adults performed a reaction time shape identification task. A visual target stimulus was presented 1850 to 2350 ms plus a fixed interval (50, 100, 200, 400, 800, or 1600 ms, depending on the...

The early facilitatory effect of a peripheral spatially noninformative prime stimulus depends on target stimulus features BJMBR
Azevedo,E.L.; Squella,S.A.F.; Ribeiro-do-Valle,L.E..
We investigated the dependency of the early facilitatory effect of a prime stimulus (S1) on the physical characteristics of the target stimulus (S2). A go-no go reaction time paradigm was used. The S1 was a gray ring and the S2s were a white vertical line, a white horizontal line, a white cross and a white small ring, all inside a white ring with the same dimensions as the S1. S1 onset-S2 onset asynchrony was 100 ms. The stimuli appeared randomly in any one of the quadrants of a monitor screen. The S2 could occur at the same position as the S1 or at a different one. We observed a strong facilitatory effect when the vertical line or the horizontal line was the go stimulus and no effect when the cross was the go stimulus. These results show that the features...

CROSS-TOLERANCE MECHANISM INDUCTION IN MELON SEEDS BY PRIMING PRIOR DRYING Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Lira,Jean Marcel Sousa; Lara,Túlio Silva; Rodrigues,Amanda Cristiane; Dousseau,Sara; Magalhães,Marcelo Murad; Alvarenga,Amauri Alves de.
The loss of benefits after re-drying is one of the drawbacks of the seed priming technique. Different types of stresses have been used before re-drying to preserve the priming benefits. This process may be seen as promoting cross tolerance to increase the defense mechanisms that prevent loss of viability in seeds primed after drying. We tested the effect of some stresses to induce cross-tolerance and different drying conditions with the aim of maintaining priming benefits in melon seeds. The seeds were primed in an aerated KNO3 solution (0.35M), -1.7MPa, 25 °C, in the dark for six days. The primed seeds were then submitted to slow drying, fast drying, cold shock + slow drying, cold shock + fast drying, heat shock + slow drying, heat shock + fast drying,...

Priming of Stylosanthes seeds Ciência Rural
Alencar,Karina Margareti de Castilio; Rodrigues,Adriana Paula D'Agostini Contreiras; Pereira,Silvia Rahe; Laura,Valdemir Antônio.
It is estimated that 60% of the area of cultivated pasture, in the Brazilian Savannah, is degraded or in process of degradation, due to, among other causes, the lack of nitrogen. The Stylosanthes genus is the legume which has the greater number of cultivars used in tropical pastures, however, its seeds have characteristics which can difficult the formation of an adequate stand of plants on pasture. In this research the aim was to evaluate the effects of priming in the speed and uniformity of the Stylosanthes capitata, S. macrocephala and S. guianensis seeds germination. The seeds were kept for 12, 24, 36 and 48 hours in aired media PEG 6,000 at 0.0, -0.5, -1.0 and -1.5MPa. Afterwards, they were sent to the germination test. The variables analyzed were...

Scientific discoveries rely on creative thinking, and several authors have explored similarities in and differences between creativity in the sciences and that in the arts. Here we explore possible ways in which science can learn from the arts, focusing specifically on experiences derived from the art of magic and on the limitations of human cognition. Generations of stage magicians or “illusionists” have made sophisticated use of the weaknesses in human systems of perception and interpretation. We highlight three important principles of magic tricks, including: (1) the audience see what it expects, (2) it is blind to all but the focus of attention, and (3) ideas spring predictably from a primed mind. These principles highlight a number...

We evaluated the effect of the priming with polyethyleneglicol (PEG) 6000 followed or not of drying on two lots of eggplant seeds with medium and low vigor respectively. The seeds were submitted to the treatments of priming with PEG 6000 in the osmotic potentials of -0.6, -0.9 and -1.2 MPa during 48 or 96 hours of priming with and without subsequent drying. For the soaking of seeds in osmotic solutions, these were placed over three sheets of paper boxes such germitest gerbox conditioning moistened with each solution in a 3:1 ratio. The control group was represented by unprimed seeds. The priming for both lots provided higher values in relation to the vigor through the first counting of germination, seedlings and primary root length, germination and...

A Sustained Immune Response Supports Long-Term Antiviral Immune Priming in the Pacific Oyster, Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer

Over the last decade, innate immune priming has been evidenced in many invertebrate phyla. If mechanistic models have been proposed, molecular studies aiming to substantiate these models have remained scarce. We reveal here the transcriptional signature associated with immune priming in the oyster Crassostrea gigas. Oysters were fully protected against Ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1), a major oyster pathogen, after priming with poly(I·C), which mimics viral double-stranded RNA. Global analysis through RNA sequencing of oyster and viral genes after immune priming and viral infection revealed that poly(I·C) induces a strong antiviral response that impairs OsHV-1 replication. Protection is based on a sustained upregulation of immune genes, notably genes...

Revival of ancient marine dinoflagellates using molecular biostimulation ArchiMer
Delebecq, Gaspard; Schmidt, Sabine; Ehrhold, Axel; Latimier, Marie; Siano, Raffaele.
The biological processes involved in the preservation, viability, and revival of long‐term dormant dinoflagellate cysts buried in sediments remain unknown. Based on studies of plant seed physiology, we tested whether the revival of ancient cysts preserved in century‐old sediments from the Bay of Brest (France) could be stimulated by melatonin and gibberellic acid, two molecules commonly used in seed priming. Dinoflagellates were revived from sediments dated to approximately 150 years ago (156 ± 27, 32 cm depth), extending the known record age of cyst viability previously established as around one century. A culture suspension of sediments mixed with melatonin and gibberellic acid solutions as biostimulants exhibited germination of 11 dinoflagellate taxa...

Matriconditioning integrated with gibberellic acid to hasten seed germination and improve stand establishment of pepper and tomato PAB
Andreoli,Claudinei; Khan,Anwar A.
Emergence and stand establishment of tomato (Lycopersicon lycopersicum (L.) (Karsten ex Farw) and pepper (Capsicum annus L.) seeds are often slow and erratic, particularly under stress conditions. Field emergence trials sometimes have not responded to priming in pepper. This study examined the combined effects of matriconditioning and gibberellin application on the germination and stand establishment of pepper and tomato seeds. Pepper and tomato seeds were conditioned with a solid carrier, Micro Cel E, in the presence of gibberellic acid (GA) for 1, 2 , 3 and 4 days at 15 and 25ºC. The results showed that, in all cases, even under stress conditions, the combination of matriconditioning with GA was effective in improving germination and emergence of pepper...
