A note on the connectedness locus of the families of polynomials Pc(z)=z n - cz n-j Anais da ABC (AABC)
Arteaga,Carlos; Alves,Alexandre.
Let j be a positive integer. For each integer n > j we consider the connectedness locus Mn of the family of polynomials Pc(z) = z n - cz n-j, where c is a complex parameter. We prove that lim n→∞ Mn = D in the Hausdorff topology, where D is the unitary closed disk {c;|c|<1}.

Comparison between multivariate methods applied for the evaluation of genetic divergence in Cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) BABT
Dias,Luiz Antônio dos Santos; Kageyama,Paulo Yoshio.
Several multivariate methods have been used in divergence analyses of populations. Consistency and relative association among four methods were assessed using a 5 x 5 complete-diallel data involving cacao cultivars. Over a 5-year period, five cultivars were analyzed based upon five yield components. In assessing the divergence of parents only the data obtained from five cacao cultivars were analyzed. Four multivariate statistics presented close association when considered in pairs, in this case the Mahalanobis' (D²) with the mean Euclidean distance obtained from canonical variates (d cv), and mean Euclidean distance (d e) with the mean Euclidean distance obtained from principal components (d pc). In both cases, high correlations (r > 0.95) were...

The ecosystems of the Mediterranean interior dryland of Chile, dominated by an espinal agroecosystem of Acacia caven (Molina) Molina, show low productivity as a result of soil degradation. The objective of this study was to evaluate litter decomposition of A. caven and Lolium multiflorum Lam. in espinal ecosystems: well preserved (Wp) 50 to 80%, typical (Pd) 25 to 50%, and degraded (De) with 10 to 25% cover. During 420 d and starting in April 2004 until August 2005, weight loss in litter bags and chemical composition (hemicellulose, cellulose, lignin, non-structural components, ash, N, C, C/N ratio, and P) were determined by using near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) and the Van Soest protocol. Weight loss ranged from 31 to 52% in L. multiflorum...

Matus,Iván; Mellado,Mario; Pinares,Marcos; Madariaga,Ricardo; del Pozo,Alejandro.
Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is the major crop in terms of planted area and presents the largest distribution in the country covering a wide range of climatic regions. This study assesses the changes of various agronomic traits of winter wheat cultivars released in Chile between 1920 and 2000. A total of 117 winter accessions, representing 45 old and 72 modern cultivars were tested in a humid Mediterranean-type climate, with irrigation, in 2003. Old cultivars were those released before 1960 and modern ones were those released after 1960. Principal component (PC) analysis using 10 agronomic traits clearly separate modern from old cultivars of winter wheat. Comparing modern cultivars with old ones, plant height have been reduced by 25.6%, but others traits...

Soil penetration resistance analysis by multivariate and geostatistical methods REA
Medina,Cecilia; Camacho-Tamayo,Jesús H.; Cortés,César A..
The penetration resistance (PR) is a soil attribute that allows identifies areas with restrictions due to compaction, which results in mechanical impedance for root growth and reduced crop yield. The aim of this study was to characterize the PR of an agricultural soil by geostatistical and multivariate analysis. Sampling was done randomly in 90 points up to 0.60 m depth. It was determined spatial distribution models of PR, and defined areas with mechanical impedance for roots growth. The PR showed a random distribution to 0.55 and 0.60 m depth. PR in other depths analyzed showed spatial dependence, with adjustments to exponential and spherical models. The cluster analysis that considered sampling points allowed establishing areas with compaction problem...

Minimum number and best combinations of harvests to evaluate accessions of tomato plants from germplasm banks Genet. Mol. Biol.
Abreu,Flávia Barbosa; Silva,Derly José Henriques da; Marim,Bruno Garcia; Carneiro,Pedro Crescêncio Souza; Juhasz,Ana Cristina Pinto; De Luca,Carina A.C.; Valente,Reginaldo Fialho; Guimarães,Marcelo Almeida.
This study presents the minimum number and the best combination of tomato harvests needed to compare tomato accessions from germplasm banks. Number and weight of fruit in tomato plants are important as auxiliary traits in the evaluation of germplasm banks and should be studied simultaneously with other desirable characteristics such as pest and disease resistance, improved flavor and early production. Brazilian tomato breeding programs should consider not only the number of fruit but also fruit size because Brazilian consumers value fruit that are homogeneous, large and heavy. Our experiment was a randomized block design with three replicates of 32 tomato accessions from the Vegetable Germplasm Bank (Banco de Germoplasma de Hortaliças) at the Federal...

ATTRIBUTES OF IDEAL SOIL SUBSTITUTES: RESULTS OF A SURVEY OF DEMAND SECTORS AgEcon
Lohr, Luanne.
This paper describes preferences for attributes of ideal soil substitutes reported by industry demand segments, and relates those attributes to willingness to pay for soil substitutes. Regression results on principal components indicate that concern over product stability, safety and environmental protection induce higher willingness to pay for ideal soil products.

VALUATION OF INTANGIBLE CAPITAL IN AGRICULTURE AgEcon
White, Fred C..
This study examines the valuation of research as intangible capital in agriculture using Tobin's q theory. The market value of public research capital is estimated to be 8.6 times higher than conventional assets. Private research capital is valued 5.2 times higher than conventional assets. The estimated valuation multiplier for all farm assets dropped 1/3 over the last decade. In recent years the valuation multiplier has dropped below a dollar, which indicated the market is undervaluing farm assets.

A SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS OF QUALITY OF LIFE INDICES ACROSS COUNTRIES AgEcon
Rahman, Tauhidur; Mittelhammer, Ronald C.; Wandschneider, Philip R..
This paper attempts to provide a comprehensive analysis of interrelationships among the determinants of the Quality of Life (QOL). We show that various measures of well-being are highly sensitive to domains of QOL that are considered in the construction of comparative indices, and how measurable inputs into the well-being indicators are aggregated and weighted to arrive at composite measures of QOL. We present a picture of conditions among the 43 countries of the world with respect to such interrelated domains of QOL as the relationship with family and friends, emotional well-being, health, work and productivity, material well-being, feeling part of one's community, personal safety, and the quality of environment. Estimating Large-Scale Factor Models for Economic Activity in Germany: Do They Outperform Simpler Models? AgEcon
Dreger, Christian; Schumacher, Christian.
This paper discusses a large-scale factor model for the German economy. Following the recent literature, a data set of 121 time series is used via principal component analysis to determine the factors, which enter a dynamic model for German GDP. The model is compared with alternative univariate and multivariate models. These models are based on regression techniques and considerably smaller data sets. Out-of-sample forecasts show that the prediction errors of the factor model are smaller than the errors of the rival models. However, these advantages are not statistically significant, as a test for equal forecast accuracy shows. Therefore, the efficiency gains of using a large data set with this kind of factor models seem to be limited. Diese Arbeit...
