Scaling of Natal Dispersal Distances in Terrestrial Birds and Mammals Ecology and Society

Natal dispersal is a process that is critical in the spatial dynamics of populations, including population spread, recolonization, and gene flow. It is a central focus of conservation issues for many vertebrate species. Using data for 77 bird and 68 mammal species, we tested whether median and maximum natal dispersal distances were correlated with body mass, diet type, social system, taxonomic family, and migratory status. Body mass and diet type were found to predict both median and maximum natal dispersal distances in mammals: large species dispersed farther than small ones, and carnivorous species dispersed farther than herbivores and omnivores. Similar relationships occurred for carnivorous bird species, but not for herbivorous or omnivorous ones....

Dynamics of the diameter distribution of Pinus taeda stands, in the region of Caçador, SC, Brazil PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira

The objective of this work was to fit the probability density functions Normal and SB, to describe the changes, with age, in the diameter distribution of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) stands, in the region of Caçador, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. The data came from permanent and temporary plots, with ages ranging from 5 to 11,9, grouped in age classes with intervals of 1 year. The probability density functions were fitted and, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and the parameters of skewness and kurtosis were calculated. Basing on Kolmogorov-Smirnov test it was verified that, for ages from 5 to 7.9 years old, the Normal and SB functions didn’t show satisfactory adherence. Using density-distribution sunflower plots to explore bivariate relationships in dense data AgEcon

Density-distribution sunflower plots are used to display high-density bivariate data. They are useful for data where a conventional scatterplot is difficult to read due to overstriking of the plot symbol. The x–y plane is subdivided into a lattice of small, regular, hexagonal bins. These bins are divided into low-, medium-, and high-density groups. In low-density bins, the individual observations are plotted as in a conventional scatterplot. Medium- and high-density bins contain light and dark sunflowers, respectively. In a light sunflower, each petal represents one observation. In a dark sunflower, each petal represents a specific number of observations. The user can control the sizes and colors of the sunflowers. By selecting appropriate colors and sizes...
