Anfälligkeit von Leguminosen gegenüber Meloidogyne hapla Organic Eprints
Reents, Dr. H. J.; Egerer, Johanna; Hermann, A..
Green manure legumes are a necessary element of organic crop rotations. However, they are able to propagate nematodes especially Meloidogyne and Paratylenchus species. The results of a pot experiment showed that plant species of the genera Pisum, Vicia, Trifolium had a higher propagation rate of Meloidogyne hapla than salad Latuca sativa while plant species of the genera Medicago and Melilotus were less susceptible to infestation of nematodes. It is concluded that crop rotation management especially in vegetable production has to consider the different susceptibility of the legumes and further research has to test more species and varieties.

Intercropping with grain legumes increases N and S concentration and N:S ratios of wheat grain in European organic farming systems Organic Eprints
Kasyanova, Dr E; Gooding, Dr MJ.
Field experiments were conducted in three successive growing seasons (2002/03 to 2004/05) at different sites within Europe. Treatments included wheat intercropped with faba bean in both replacement and additive designs, both autumn and spring sowing, and at one site, wheat intercropped with pea. Irrespective of design, sowing season, site, or grain legume used, intercropping increased the N and S concentration, and the N:S ratio in wheat grain.

Effect of intercropping on disease severity in organic farming Organic Eprints
Daniel, Marie.
In order to improve plant quality in organic farming, DARCOF launched studies on crop management, and among them, research on intercropping, defined as the growing of two or more species simultaneously in the same field during a growing season. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of intercropping on disease severity. The fist part of this report presents the context of this study and the research center where this work took place. Then, the literature review approaches the different systems on which intercropping is based. This is followed by methods used and the results. To finish, a discussion points out the conclusions of this work and its limitations. In this study, the levels of all diseases were very low. Intercropping had a...

Field experiments with spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and field pea (Pisum sativum L.) were carried out in three subsequent growing seasons 2004 to 2006 at the Hessian State Estate Frankenhausen located near Kassel in Central Germany. Spring barley and field pea were sown out as sole crops and intercropped with different seed rates in replacement and additive design, using two sowing modes: row by row (IC) and mixed intercropping (MC). Intercropping (IC and MC) was able to increase grain yield in most of the treatments. The Land Equivalent Ratio (LER) was always higher than 1, indicating that plant growth factors were used more efficiently by the intercrop than by the sole crop. Besides, the N content in spring barley grain was increased by...

Yield, pest density, and tomato flavor effects of companion planting in garden-scale studies incorporating tomato, basil, and Brussels sprout Organic Eprints
Bomford, Michael K..
Companion planting is a small-scale intercropping practice often associated with organic or biodynamic gardening. Two garden-scale studies tested popular companion planting claims by comparing garden beds devoted entirely to one of three or more test crops (monocultures) to all possible two-crop mixtures (dicultures) of the same species. A third study evaluated effects of planting density and crop ratio in three dicultures using a novel experimental design to create gradients in both factors. All studies incorporated basil (Ocimum basilicum L.), Brussels sprout (Brassica oleracea L.), and tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.). A preliminary study also included snap bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), radish (Raphanus sativus L.) before Brussels sprout, and...
