Bactrocera oleae (Gmelin) control in organic olive farming. 21
Iannotta, Nino; Belfiore, Tiziana; Noce, Maria Elena; Scalercio, Stefano; Vizzarri, Veronica.
In the Mediterranean area the olive fly control, difficult to realise in conventional farming, becomes even more arduous in organic farming, owing to the restrictions laid down by Regulation. The EC Reg. 2092/91 which implements organic farming and its updates provide standards allowing only the use of natural origin substances for crop protection contained in annex IIB, forbidding the chemical pesticides use. The present study has been performed in Calabria (Southern Italy) in two different pedoclimatic olive areas (Mirto-Crosia and Terranova da Sibari) and in two observation years (2005-2006) in order to assess the efficacy of substances listed in the annex IIB as copper (antibacterial substance) and biopesticides azadiracthin and rotenone and the...

Quality control of reared parasitoids:preliminary study on the application of RAPD Molecular Marker technique to the model Opius concolor. 21
SFEIR, Thérèse.
The evaluation of field efficiency of reared Opius concolor released to control the olive fly, in the presence of indigenous populations interfering with release results becomes unreliable. RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) molecular marker technique was proposed to differentiate between indigenous and reared populations.Indigenous samples were collected from several regions in Puglia-Basilicata-Sardinia. Reared populations were brought from the insectarium of Cagliari-Sardinia .The initiation of a biomolecular work lead to the setting of a starting protocol, with an adequate extraction method, elements concentration, and primers applied. The preliminary observations on laboratory population in comparison with collected indigenous ones have shown...

Susceptibility of olive cultivars to the Camarosporium dalmaticum (Thum) infections 21
Iannotta, dr. Nino; Noce, dr. Maria Elena; Perri, sig. Luigi; Scalercio, dr. Stefano; Vizzarri, dr. Veronica.
The C.R.A. Experimental Institute for Olive Growing has been performing for many years the study of olive germplasm in order to identify genetic resistance sources to the olive parasites. Some pathogens are particularly noxious for olive table production because they attack and disfigure the outward appearance of the fruits. Camarosporium dalmaticum (Thum) is a pathogen widespread in Southern Italy determining the olive fruit rot in many genotypes particularly susceptible to its infection. The object of the present study is an investigation carried out in Calabria in an experimental field, analysing 25 cvs cultivated under the same environmental and growing conditions. The observations were performed on olive fruit samples (200 per thesis) and the...

Detection of Olive-Infecting Viruses in the Mediterranean Basin 21
Saponari, Maria; Alkowni, Raed; Driouech, Noureddin; Hassan, Mohamed; Grieco, Francesco; Pantaleo, Antonio; Biagio, Di Terlizzi; Digiaro, Michele; Savino, Vito; Martelli, P. Giovanni.
Olive (Olea europaea) is host of 13 different viruses but, it is possible that other viruses, which are either non mechanically transmissible or occur in low concentration in plant tissues, are present in nature. This likelihood is supported by the widespread occurrence of double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs) in plants negative to biological tests. As very little information is available on the geographical distribution of olive-infecting, investigations were conducted for gathering information on the prevalence and distribution of olive viruses in the Mediterranean basin based on the presence of double stranded RNA (dsRNA). A total of 527 samples were collected throughout the surveys covering 10 countries and 83 locations. Out of 286 tested samples collected...

Effectiveness of clays and copper products in the control of Bactrocera oleae (Gmelin) 21
Caleca, Virgilio; Rizzo, Roberto.
Repellent and antiovipositional products in the control of Bactrocera oleae (Gmelin) find a great interest in organic farming, because of the lack of effective products able to kill the olive fruit fly larvae and eggs. This study is the continuation of a research on the effectiveness of kaolin and copper hydroxide carried out in 2003 and 2004 in Castelvetrano and Trapani (Sicily, Italy). In 2005 a product containing 95% of kaolin, Surround WP, was tested in two organic table olive orchards, Nocellara del Belice cv., in Trapani province; in the first one (located in Castelvetrano) this kaolin was compared to copper hydroxide (Coprantol Ultramicron) and rotenone (Bioroten), in the second one (located in Partanna) it was compared to a product containing...

The impact of some compounds utilised in organic olive groves on the non-target arthropod fauna: canopy and soil levels 21
Iannotta, Nino; Belfiore, Tiziana; Noce, Maria Elena; Scalercio, Stefano; Vizzarri, Veronica.
An increasing literature body is devoted to the study of efficacy and risks concerning compounds allowed in organic farming and new compounds considered harmless for environmental and human health. The great biodiversity inhabiting olive agroecosystem lead to a biotic control of many pest species. The only widespread pest causing economic damages is the olive fly, Bactrocera oleae. The side effects of compounds allowed against the olive fly in open field are still little known as well as the agronomical methods for mitigating them. The aims of this research were to evaluate the impact of compounds allowed in organic olive farming and searching for more ecocompatible farming strategies. The research was carried out in Southern Italy. Experimental olive...

Genetic characterization of Apulian wild population of the parasitoid Psyttalia (Opius) concolor (Szepligeti) for biological control of Bactrocera oleae (Gmelin). 21
KARAM, Nisrine.
Given the morphological similarity between the released Psyttalia (Opius) concolor and the wild Apulian ones, the biological control program against the olive fruit fly Bactrocera oleae is faced with problem of evaluating the efficacy of the release using the released reared endoparasitoid. A DNA molecular technique, the Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) was used to define eventual molecular markers and to assess the genetic variability between seven wild Apulian populations and one reared strain of P. concolor. A RAPD approach highlights a high genetic similarity among the populations from Puglia, suggesting a common evolutionary history. It also revealed a high genetic homogeneity between the reared and the Apulian samples, ruling out the...

Resistance to the attack of Bactrocera oleae (Gmelin) of some Sicilian olive cultivars 21
Rizzo, Roberto; Caleca, Virgilio.
Genetic resistance of olive germplasm could be an important tool in the control of Bactrocera oleae (Gmelin), the key pest in the Mediterranean olive growing. Up to now, no study was carried out on olive cultivars stressed a complete resistance to the attack of B. oleae, and few scientific data are available on susceptibility to olive fruit fly of Sicilian cultivars, although differences among susceptibility of cultivars could be usefully considered to obtain quality productions and to reduce insecticides use both in organic and conventional olive growing. The present study was carried out at Castelvetrano (Trapani province, Sicily), in the olive germplasm collection of Ente di Sviluppo Agricolo of the Sicilian Region and Dipartimento di Colture Arboree...

Efficacy of products allowed in organic olive farming against Bactrocera oleae (Gmel.) 21
Iannotta, Nino; Belfiore, Tiziana; Noce, Maria Elena; Perri, Luigi; Scalercio, Stefano.
In organic olive farming one of the most problems is how to control the olive fly. The present study has been performed in two different Calabrian olive areas in order to test some active molecules allowed by regulation concerning organic farming. The tested compounds were Rotenone, Azadiractin, Copper, Kaolin and Propolis. The results showed that, at harvesting time (end of October), the lowest infestation has been registered on the trees treated with Propolis and Kaolin in both investigated fields. The obtained results display that the restraining of the active infestation of Bactrocera oleae within limits of 20%, compatible with a quality production, turns to be possible also in Southern olive areas.

Repellent and antiovipositional products in the control of Bactrocera oleae (Gmelin) find a great interest in organic farming, because of the lack of effective products able to kill the olive fly preimmaginal stages. In 2003 in Castelvetrano (Trapani province, Sicily), tests on the effectiveness of Surround WP, a product containing 95% of kaolin, were carried out on three table olive cultivars, Nocellara del Belice, Moresca and Tonda Iblea. In 2004, in the same field and on the same cultivars, BPLK kaolin was tested too. In the second year the two products containing kaolin were also tested on Cerasuola cultivar in an organic olive grove located in Trapani, comparing them with copper hydroxide. Survey on the control methods of Bactrocera oleae (Gmelin) in organic olive groves producing oil and table olives in Sicily 21
Caleca, Virgilio; Palumbo Piccionello, Manuela; Battaglia, Isabella; Dimino, Silvana.
In Sicily there are several organic farms producing olive oil and the number of farms has grown in the last years. The control methods of Bactrocera oleae (Gmelin) used by Sicilian organic farms were surveyed in 2004 and 2005. After a bibliographic search on internet and by personal contacts, a sample of 30 organic farms in Sicily was chosen; 23 farms produce bottled extra-virgin oil and 7 produce table olives. Then farms were contacted by phone, some of them visited and olive growers were interviewed. For each farm were put together data about: interventions vs. the olive fruit fly, altitude, surface of the olive grove, olive cultivar, irrigation method, harvesting period, milling procedure, product destination and production results in 2005 and in the...

RAPD markers for the characterization of the olive fruit fly parasitoid Opius concolor (Spzel.) used in biological control programs. 21
ALBAKRI, Mamoun.
The endoparasitoid Opius concolor (Spzel.) has been used as a biological control agent in the biological control programs of the olive fruit fly, which consists of massive releases of parasitoid in fields where indigenous wild types are present. Field differentiation between the released and the indigenous parasitoids, and the estimation of the proportion of released individuals in the overall field population are a prerequisite to estimate the efficiency of the biological control programs. Because wild and released parasitoids are morphologically indistinguishable, a DNA molecular technique, based on Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), the Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD-PCR) was used to differentiate between five different populations of this...

Kaolin protects olive fruits from Bactrocera oleae (Gmelin) infestations unaffecting olive oil quality 21
Perri, Dr Enzo; Iannotta, Dr Nino; Muzzalupo, PhD Innocenzo; Russo, Dr Anna; Caravita, Dr Maria Anna; Pellegrino, Mr Massimiliano; Parise, Mr Attilio; Tucci, Mr Paolo.
The efficacy of the processed kaolin “Surround WP” to control olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae Gmelin, field infestations was investigated in east Calabria. The preliminary results showed that fruit infestation levels were significantly reduced on kaolin-treated trees compared with untreated trees. The promising results of these experiments points to the feasibility of using particle film technology composed of a non-toxic material, to avoid olive fly damage as an alternative to the applications of rotenone in organic orchards. Finally, kaolin treatment unaffected the nutritional and sensory quality parameters of the corresponding virgin olive oils obtained by a laboratory scale olive mill, thus satisfying the present quality requirements.
