Discolored waters and human diseases by shellfishes were dominant features of summer 1983 in south coast of Brittany. Vilaine Bay, the most damaged area, was successively affected by brown waters in early June, and diarrhetic intoxications by harvested mussels (July and August), just as DPS producing dinoflagellate (D. acuminata ) reached higher water or mussel guts concentrations than years before. Outspreading in the whole south coast of Brittany and possible relation with hydrological or biological parameters are analyzed. |

The swimming behavior of the ciliate Strobilidium sp. was recorded using cinematographic techniques. A density of 20 ciliates/ml was used under 4 experimental food conditions: 121, 625, 3025, and 15,125 cells/ml of the dinoflagellate Gymnodinium sp. In total, 100 trajectories per experiment were recorded and analyzed. We classified this ciliate’s swimming trajectories into categories we called “helix”, “non-helix”, and “break”. These swimming states were identified using automated recognition of helices, based on values of swimming trajectory angles. We performed a symbolic analysis of the succession of swimming states which enabled discrimination between food concentration experiments, and provided a more-complete characterization of the swimming... |

In samples of raw sewage collected from a sewage treatment plant in Rio de Janeiro (ETE-Penha), we found populations of two species, Deviata estevesi Paiva & Silva-Neto, 2005 and Deviata brasiliensis sp. nov. The organisms were studied in vivo under phase contrast microscopy, differential interference contrast (DIC), and after protargol-impregnation. The population of D. estevesi exhibited more extensive variation in cirral pattern than previously described. The interphasic organisms of new species D. brasiliensis sp. nov. are distinguishable from their congeners based on a series of morphometric features: cirral row R3 usually presents 1-3 cirri behind the right frontal cirrus, on average there are four macronuclear nodules, and, during... |

A second study of the testate amoebae of the region of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul revealed the presence of Arcella Ehrenberg, 1830.Difflugia Leclerc, 1815, Lesquereusia Schulumberger, 1845, Centropyxis Stein, 1857, Bulinularia Penard, 1911 and Euglypha Dujardin, 1841 genera. Our finds demand emendations of the diagnostic characteristics of several species. |
