Synthesis of silver nanoparticles using a biosurfactant produced in low-cost medium as stabilizing agent Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Farias,Charles B.B.; Ferreira Silva,Aline; Diniz Rufino,Raquel; Moura Luna,Juliana; Gomes Souza,José Edson; Sarubbo,Leonie Asfora.
Background A biosurfactant produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa cultivated in a low-cost medium formulated with 2.5% vegetable oil refinery residue and 2.5% corn steep liquor and distilled water was employed to stabilize silver nanoparticles in the liquid phase. The particles were initially synthesized using NaBH4 as reducing agent in biosurfactant reverse micelles and were extracted from the micellar solution to disperse in heptane. Results A silver particle size in the range of 1.13 nm was observed. The UV-vis absorption spectra proposed that silver nanoparticles could be formed in the reverse micelles and relatively stabilized for at least 3 months without passivator addition. The Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) shows that the silver nanoparticles...

Alterocin, an antibiofilm protein secreted by Pseudoalteromonas sp. 3J6 ArchiMer
Jouault, Albane; Gobet, Angelique; Simon, Marjolaine; Portier, Emilie; Perennou, Morgan; Corre, Erwan; Gaillard, Fanny; Vallenet, David; Michel, Gurvan; Fleury, Yannick; Bazire, Alexis; Dufour, Alain.
The aim was to identify and study the antibiofilm protein secreted by the marine bacterium Pseudoalteromonas sp. 3J6. The latter is active against marine and terrestrial bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical strains forming different biofilm types. Several amino acid sequences were obtained from the partially purified antibiofilm protein, named alterocin. The Pseudoalteromonas sp. 3J6 genome was sequenced and a candidate alt gene was identified by comparing the genome-encoded proteins to the sequences from purified alterocin. Expressing the alt gene in another non-active Pseudoalteromonas sp. strain, 3J3, demonstrated that it is responsible for the antibiofilm activity. Alterocin is a 139-residue protein including a predicted 20-residue...

Screening of Lactobacillus spp. for the prevention of Pseudomonas aeruginosa pulmonary infections ArchiMer
Alexandre, Youenn; Le Berre, Rozenn; Barbier, Georges; Le Blay, Gwenaelle.
Background: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that significantly increases morbidity and mortality in nosocomial infections and cystic fibrosis patients. Its pathogenicity especially relies on the production of virulence factors or resistances to many antibiotics. Since multiplication of antibiotic resistance can lead to therapeutic impasses, it becomes necessary to develop new tools for fighting P. aeruginosa infections. The use of probiotics is one of the ways currently being explored. Probiotics are microorganisms that exert a positive effect on the host's health and some of them are known to possess antibacterial activities. Since most of their effects have been shown in the digestive tract, experimental data compatible with the...

Polyclonal endemicity of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in a teaching hospital from Brazil: molecular typing of decade-old strains J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Fortaleza,CMCB; Bacchi,CE; Oliveira,DE; Ramos,MC.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections cause significant mortality and morbidity in health care settings. Strategies to prevent and control the emergence and spread of P. aeruginosa within hospitals involve implementation of barrier methods and antimicrobial stewardship programs. However, there is still much debate over which of these measures holds the utmost importance. Molecular strain typing may help elucidate this issue. In our study, 71 nosocomial isolates from 41 patients and 23 community-acquired isolates from 21 patients were genotyped. Enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus-polymerase chain reaction (ERIC-PCR) was performed. Band patterns were compared using similarity coefficients of Dice, Jaccard and simple matching. Strain similarity for...

Frequency of Nonfermentative Gram-Negative Bacilli Isolated from Clinical Materials of Pacients at Universidade Federal do Ceará Hospital Complex - Brazil Rev. Microbiol.
Frota,Cristiane Cunha; Moreira,José Luciano Bezerra.
Among one thousand eight hundred and thirty-four Gram-negative bacilli, isolated at Universidade Federal do Ceará hospital complex - Brazil, from January 1995 to February 1996, 456 (24.8%) were Nonfermentative Gram-Negative Bacilli (NFGNB). This study reports their identification to the species level and their frequency as well. Thirteen genera and thirty species were identified and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most frequent species (69.95%), followed by Acinetobacter baumannii (5.48%) and by Acinetobacter lwoffii (3.95%). Among the identified P.aeruginosa strains, 94.1% produced pigment but 7.9% of them produced pigment only after being cultivated several times. The frequency of the most species was similar to that reported in the literature.

Pseudomonas Aeruginosa: Virulence Factors and Antibiotic Resistance Genes BABT
Rocha,Antônio José; Barsottini,Mario Ramos de Oliveira; Rocha,Renan Rhonalty; Laurindo,Maria Vitória; Moraes,Francisco Leandro Laurindo de; Rocha,Soraya Lília da.
Abstract In this review, we explore some aspects of Pseudomonas aeruginosa virulence factors that are related to disease development in healthy organisms and resistance to antibiotics. This pathogen is one of the most clinically and epidemiologically important bacteria in Brazil, being the major cause of opportunistic infections. Among the virulence factors, biofilm formation acting of manner different in the organism. Furthermore, we review several P. aeruginosa genes that act in antimicrobial resistance, such as β-lactamases against β-lactamers. The resistance to pied-lactamases in P. aeruginosa is associated to resistance to the broad-spectrum cephalosporin. On the other hand, there is a group of synthetic broad-spectrum antibiotics acting on DNA...

Synergic interaction between ascorbic acid and antibiotics against Pseudomonas aeruginosa BABT
Cursino,Luciana; Chartone-Souza,Edmar; Nascimento,Andréa Maria Amaral.
Studies were carried out on in vitro combination of ascorbic acid (AA) with six antibiotics against 12 multi-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates. Synergic activity was detected with AA chloramphenicol, kanamycin, streptomycin and tetracycline. Indifference was observed to any antibiotics and antagonism only for chloramphenicol. Results indicated that multiresistant P. aeruginosa was affected by combination of AA and antibiotics. Future research on ascorbic acid-antimicrobial interactions may find new methods to control strains of multiresistant P. aeruginosa.

Production of biopolymers by Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from marine source BABT
Jamil,Nazia; Ahmed,Nuzhat.
Two bacterial strains, Pseudomonas aeruginosa CMG607w and CMG1421 produce commercially important biopolymers. CMG607w isolated from the sediments of Lyari outfall to Arabian Sea synthesize the mcl-polyhydroxyalkanoates from various carbon sources. The production of PHAs was directly proportional to the incubation periods. Other strain CMG1421, a dry soil isolate, produced high viscous water absorbing extracellular acidic polysaccharide when it was grown aerobically in the minimal medium containing glucose or fructose or sucrose as sole source of carbon. The biopolymer had the ability to absorb water 400 times more than its dry weight. This property was superior to that of currently used non-degradable synthetic water absorbents. It acted as salt filter and...
