Design, fabrication and evaluation of horizontal rotary separator of olive oil (Three-Phase Decanter) 111
Rashvand, Mahdi; Akbarnia, Abbas.
Olive is one of the strategic products in Iran, and due to the significant cultivation area of this product, oil companies should be equipped with suitable processing equipment. Unfortunately, despite the high capacity of olive in Iran, oil companies are equipped with imported machines. In this study, the construction and evaluation of the Three-counter device of Iran has been developed. The machine has three oil, water and olive pulp outputs. In order to evaluate the machine, the amount of moisture content and fat extracted from the machine was checked at 2500 and 3500 rpm and 30 and 45% water content. Also, four different samples Manzallina, Fishemi, Kalamata and Oily were used in this experiment. The main components of the machine include an electric...

The influence of processing and long-term storage on the antioxidant metabolism of acerola (Malpighia emarginata) purée 61
Oliveira,Luciana S.; Rufino,Maria S. M.; Moura,Carlos F. H.; Cavalcanti,Fabio R.; Alves,Ricardo E.; Miranda,Maria R. A..
This study evaluated the effect of the processing and long-term storage on the antioxidant potential and activity of antioxidant enzymes of frozen purées from six acerola clones. Ripe acerolas from clones BRS 235, BRS 236, BRS 237, BRS 238, II47/1 and BRS 152 were harvested; the pulp was processed, packed in sealed polyethylene plastic bags and stored in a domestic freezer at -18°C for 11 months. Samples of each clone were analyzed on harvest/processing day and every 30 days after for bioactive antioxidant compounds, antioxidant enzyme activity and total antioxidant activity. Acerola purées presented a decrease of non-enzyme antioxidants and an increase of antioxidant enzymes activities, indicatives of a compensatory mechanism between enzymatic and...

Nutritional composition, fatty acid and tocopherol contents of buriti (Mauritia flexuosa) and patawa (Oenocarpus bataua) fruit pulp from the amazon region 116
Darnet,Sylvain Henri; Silva,Luiza Helena Meller da; Rodrigues,Antonio Manoel da Cruz; Lins,Roseana Telles.
Buriti and patawa are two endemic palm trees from the Amazon region. Their pulps are traditionally consumed by the local population, but are underused and lesser known worldwide. Nutritional composition, fatty acid and tocopherol contents of the two palm pulps were determined by modern analytical methods: Gas Chromatography (CG) and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), based on the standards of AOCS (AMERICAN..., 2002) and AOAC (ASSOCIATION..., 1997), respectively. Buriti and patawa fruit pulps are highly nutritive, with respectively, high fat content (38.4% and 29.1% of dry matter (DM)), protein content (7.6% and 7.4% of DM) and dietary fibers (46% and 44.7% of DM). Buriti pulp can be considered healthy food due its high content of vitamin E...

Identification of volatile compounds in cultivars barker, collinson, fortuna and geada of avocado (Persea americana, Mill.) fruit 116
GALVAO,Mercia de Sousa; NUNES,Maria Lúcia; CONSTANT,Patricia Beltrão Lessa; NARAIN,Narendra.
Abstract The objective of this paper was to determine the volatile profile of four cultivars - Barker, Collinson, Fortuna and Geada of avocado (Persea americana, Mill.) fruit and to perform a detailed study on the effect of volatiles extraction conditions. The best conditions for extraction for Collinson and Fortuna cultivars were by using a mixture of pentane and ethyl ether (2:1) as solvent for 80 min, while for Barker and Geada cultivars, the solvents were hexane and pentane-ether (2:1), respectively but for a shorter extraction period of 60 min. A total number of 158 compounds were separated in all 4 avocado cultivars, among them eighty-four volatile compounds were identified. The principal volatile compounds viz. hexanal, ethyl acetate, methyl...

Influence of different cultivars on oil quality and chemical characteristics of avocado fruit 116
Galvão,Mercia de Sousa; Narain,Narendra; Nigam,Nisha.
The objective of this paper was to determine the chemical composition of the avocado fruit of cultivars Fortuna, Collinson, and Barker and to carry out a detailed analysis of the fatty acid composition of the pulp, seed, and peel oils. The saturated fatty acid (SFA) of the pulp oils accounted for around 22.3, 29.4, and 41.3% of the total fatty acids in the Fortuna, Collinson and Barker cultivars, respectively, and these values indicate better quality of pulp oil of Fortuna and Collinson cultivars than that of the Barker cultivar. There was very little variation in the content monounsaturated fatty acids of the peel oils between the cultivars. However, the seed oil of the Collinson cultivar was the best since it contained the lowest (30.8% of total fatty...

Montebello, Adriana Estela Sanjuan; Bacha, Carlos Jose Caetano.
This paper aims to analyze the evolution of research and technological innovations that have taken in forest and pulp industrial areas, and emphasizes their possible impacts on the competitiveness of the Brazilian pulp industry. First, primary and secondary data are used to evaluate the main types of research and technological innovations and, in sequence, it is evaluated the importance of technological innovations that have contributed to the expansion of the Brazilian pulp industry in the pulp world market. Technological innovations in forest and industrial areas in the Brazilian pulp industry have brought significant increases of forest and industrial productivities, leading to reduction of pulp production cost. Consequently, profitability of the...

EMU AND FOREST PRODUCTS PRICING AND EUROPE 31
Hanninen, Riitta; Laaksonen-Craig, Susanna; Toppinen, Anne.
In previous literature, the degree of exchange rate pass-through to importing country’s currency has often been found to be incomplete, which supports the idea of imperfect competition in the forest products markets. In this study, exchange rate pass-through is examined by employing a mark-up model for the UK and German pulp and newsprint markets for 1986–97. Two specifications are compared, one where exchange rates in importing countries are employed and the other that attributes for the fact that US dollar is largely used in pricing for forest industry products in Europe. In contrast to previous studies, our estimates indicate very low degrees of pass-through, which is consistent with competitive European markets for pulp and paper. Consequently,...
