Emmer wheat cultivated by organic farmers is used as a component of some bio (organic) food products. Its positive influence on consumer health is caused by grain composition. In the set of 8 emmer wheat accessions, the main grain components, bread making characteristics and contents of health supporting chemical substances such as total dietary fibre content and its components, content of total polyphenols plus catechin and ferulic acid contents, vitamins of the B group and E plus total content of carotenoids were evaluated by standard methods. |

The research-network PRODIVA focuses on a better utilization of crop diversification for weed management in North European arable cropping systems. The goal is to maintain diverse arable weed vegetation that is manageable in the long-term and could fulfil other necessary system-functions including support of beneficial organisms. The partners in PRODIVA will synthesize knowledge from terminated and running research projects and set-up selected new experiments on cover crops and variety resp. crop mixtures. Moreover, we will interact with partners from farming practice and extension services in organic agriculture. Regional fields will be surveyed for weeds to safeguard the relevance of the experimental research. Current cropping practices and their... |

Blue lupins have become more important in animal feeding due to increasing organic animal husbandry. The high protein content of blue lupins shows the best protein quality of the home-grown grain legumes combined with low starch content. The feed quality of blue lupins can be analysed very quickly and cost-effi ciently with NIRS. Weed infestation in pure stands of blue lupin is often a problem. Mixed cropping systems are a good alternative for weed suppression, but the yield percentage of blue lupins in mixed cultivation is low. Weed infestation can be reduced by hoeing. For this, blue lupins were cultivated in wider row distances (25.0 cm, 37.5 cm) with the possibility of hoeing, and compared with the cultivation to 12.5 cm row distance (only harrowing).... |

The fungal pathogen Microdochium majus, causing snow mould, seedling blight or foot rot results in severe yield losses in small grain cereals. There are few options to control this pathogen in organic production. In this study, aqueous extracts and powders from the botanicals chamomile, meadowsweet, thyme and Chinese galls were tested in vitro against M. majus conidia germination and mycelial growth. Subsequently, powders of three chosen botanicals were tested for their effect on emergence of M. majus infected wheat seedlings from soil in climate chambers. Furthermore, seed treatments with warm water, a commercialised bacterial product and one chosen botanical were tested in a field experiment throughout three consecutive years. Of the botanicals tested,... |

Root and foot rot is economically important disease of peas and is caused by complex of more than 20 different species of soil-borne pathogens. In recent years in Germany, Fusarium avenaceum is emerging as important and devastating pathogen and it is together with several other species, including F. solani, F. oxysporum, F. redolens and Phoma medicaginis among the casual agents of the disease that is commonly referred to as pea root rot complex. In 2012, after severe black frost in February that caused failure of the pea crop, F. avenaceum was isolated in high percentage, 42% of assessed roots. All of tested F. avenaceum isolates caused moderate to severe disease symptoms on pea variety Santana. All of composts as well as endophytic F. equisety isolates... |

The scarcity of non-renewable resources such as soils and fertilizers and the consequences of climate change can dramatically influence the food security of future generations. Mutualistic root microorganisms such as plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can improve plant fitness. We tested the growth response of wheat (Triticum aestivum [L.]), rice (Oriza sativa [L.]) and black gram (Vigna mungo [L.], Hepper) to an inoculation of AMF and PGPR alone or in combination over two years at seven locations in a region extending from the Himalayan foothills to the Indo-Gangetic plain. The AMF applied consisted of a consortium of different strains, the PGPR of two fluorescent Pseudomonas strains (Pseudomonas jessenii,... |
