Blue lupin (Lupinus angustifolius L.) could be an additional local protein crop in Bavaria for animal and human food production. It would also enlarge crop rotation in organic agriculture. At the moment, this crop is mainly cultivated in the northeastern parts of Germany. It is adapted to pH until 6.8 and sandy loamy soils. Currently, it is not re-commended for cultivation in Bavaria. In field trials, different varieties of blue lupins proved to be worth cultivating on organically managed sandy loam and loamy sand on three sites in Bavaria. Boregine and Probor were tested for four years, Mirabor and Boruta for one year. All varieties showed high crop and protein yield, also compared to white lupins. Boregine had the highest crop yield, whereas Probor the... |

The Aim of this study has been to evaluate in two two-year field trials the pre-crop effect of different grain legumes (e.g. soy bean, peas or lupines) in the same environment and to detect possible effects of grain legumes on the N-supply, the yield potential and the yield structure of the subsequent crop winter wheat. According to different pre-crop yields, a higher but different nitrogen supply for subsequent winter wheat was observed in all N2-fixing pre-crop treatments. In contrast to non-fixings control higher NO3-N contents in soil and higher yields in subsequent winter wheat (up to 24 dt*ha- 1 surplus) were observed. |

In comparison to harvesting, grazing is less cost intensive. For economical reasons an extended duration of grazing period is recommended. Grazing during winter can cause pasture damages, which is of minor relevance for older grass clover grown on arable land, which will be ploughed in the following spring. Against this background yield and forage quality of 3 different legume species, i.e. white clover, red clover and alfalfa, grown in binary mixtures with two grass species, perennial ryegrass and tall fescue, respectively, were examined before grazing the third growth in autumn or winter. Nitrate leaching losses during winter and yield of the following spring wheat were recorded. Yield and forage quality of the total sward was not significantly... |

A cultivar Albion... |

A participatory research methodology was used to compare the performance of UK wheat varieties under organic conditions. Plots of three breadmaking winter wheat varieties (Hereward, Solstice and Xi19) and a mixture (1:1:1) of the varieties were grown at 19 UK farms in two seasons (2003/04 and 2004/05). Meas-urements were taken of growth habit, yield and grain quality. Grain yields in both seasons showed significant site by variety interactions, although the variation among sites was greater than among varieties in both instances. Wheat grown at Western sites was significantly shorter and higher-yielding than that grown at Eastern sites in 2003/04 but significantly taller in 2004/05. As with grain yield, greater variation among site than variety was found... |

White lupin (Lupinus albus) can be an interesting crop for both organic and conventional farmers who are looking for leguminous crops to broaden their crop rotation scheme. Lupin is also of interest for food processors as a guaranteed GMO-free protein source for the replacement of soy. However, the available varieties ripen too late in the Netherlands. Furthermore, the largest areas suitable for arable farming are calcareous rich clayey soils. So, there is a need for early maturing calcium tolerant varieties. The goal of this study was a broad evaluation of lines of white lupin for suitability for cultivation on clayey soils high in calcium content, in order to determine whether there is sufficient perspective for further breeder for both conventional and... |

The cultivation of garlic faces several problems, which include pest attack, and the diversification of habitat through intercropping with attractive plants comes up as a method to pest management. The objective of this research was to verify the effect of the association of garlic with fodder radish on richness, abundance and diversity of arthropods under organic production system in Lavras, MG, Brazil. The treatments were composed of garlic in monoculture and garlic in association with fodder radish, in plots of 40 garlic plants, intercropped or not with two lines of fodder radish. Weekly, 25 samples were collected for a period of 10 weeks (n=250). Species accumulation curves, species richness, abundance, and diversity index were determined, and T or... |

In a period of 7 years 2007-2013) 25 varieties of lupins were tested on different soil types in The Netherlands, including 20 varieties of L. angustifolius, three varieties of L. albus and two varieties of L. luteus. These varieties were obtained from various seed companies in Germany, Denmark, Poland and the UK,. It seems that relatively small differences in climatic conditions between The Netherlands (northern-european sea climate) and the regions where most of the varieties are bred (north-eastern land climate in Germany or middle European sea climate in the north of France) already result in varieties being less adapted to the growing conditions existing in The Netherlands. An important result is that, although breeding efforts have been focusing on... |

Kvalita osiva ovlivňuje významnou měrou následnou produkční schopnost porostu, a to nejen jeho vitalitu a výnos, ale i kvalitu. Nedostatky v kvalitě osiva a během ošetřování porostu není již možné odstranit posklizňovou úpravou. V současné době je v ekologickém zemědělství velmi rozšířené používání takzvaného farmářského osiva. |

Six Vicia sativa varieties were cultivated in the year 2011 in northern Germany in pure stand and in different seed ratios in mixed cropping with oat. Parameters of yield differentiated to V. sativa and oat as well as yield performance and weed development were assessed. Results showed a better yield performance of V. sativa compared to other grain legumes. The harvest of V. sativa in pure stand with the combine is not advised because of the low resistance to lodging. A mixed cropping of V. sativa and oat with 50 % of the seed rates of pure stand showed for the most tested varieties the highest yield of V. sativa and total yield of V. sativa and oat. |

This article presents a conversation among researcher, agroecology student, and farmers about the association between cover crops and seedcorn maggot in organic grain crops. Survey data showed that Wisconsin organic farmers would use cover crop management, insect degree day forecasting, and planting date cultural controls, given appropriate knowledge context and extension information provision. We developed electronic and print resources and engaged with farmers and educators nationally through the eOrganic Community of Practice. Project outcomes exemplify student and farmer ability to effect change in land grant university extension recommendations through integrated pest management content and delivery aligned with a cropping systems perspective. |
