There is a strong competition from low-priced imported catfish fillets resulting in a declining market share for domestic farm-raised catfish fillets. To match the competition, catfish processors are embarking on pricing policy measures that are volume-oriented instead of profit- or image-oriented. This could be an effective short-run pricing policy measure for optimal long-run sustainability and profitability of the industry. Volume pricing strategies are aimed at meeting target sales volumes or market shares. This paper explores and compares the performance of the standard logit, the inverse power transformation (IPT) logit and the logarithmic version of the inverse power transformation logit models in terms of generating forecasts for market share... |

The consumer has the final word in food choice, which is determined by his perceived quality. Within a project coordinated by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine we tried to relate objective quality with the consumer quality evaluation. To do so, we have measured the expected and experienced quality of a sample of Portuguese consumers towards three types of beef (PDO, national and imported) at the shop, and compared this subjective evaluation with the beef objective quality. Results at the consumer level show that respondents perceived PDO beef to be of higher quality than the two other types of beef for different attributes and for overall quality at the shop location. In terms of objective quality results, the three types of beef showed highly similar... |

We develop and estimate an integrated discrete choice model system of product choice and nutrition information for prepared frozen meals and salted snacks in the United States in the period from 1995 to 1999. The model links consumer observed and latent characteristics (e.g., income, knowledge about nutrition, nutrition label use) to product characteristics (e.g., prices, nutritional attributes) and allows us to obtain consumer preference parameters and demand elasticities with regard to product characteristics. We find that prices, advertising, price reductions, and consumer preferences for taste have a significant effect on the demand for prepared frozen meals and salted snacks, whereas nutrition information and nutrition label use do not. Using the... |

The purpose of this study was to analyze structural changes that took place in the cotton industry in recent years and develop a statistical model that reflects the current drivers of U.S. cotton prices. Legislative changes authorized the U.S. Department of Agriculture to resume publishing cotton price forecasts for the first time in 79 years. In addition, systematic problems have become apparent in the forecasting models used by USDA and elsewhere, highlighting the need for an updated review of price relationships. This study concluded that a structural break in the U.S. cotton industry occurred in 1999, and that world cotton supply has become an important determinant of U.S. cotton prices. China’s trade and production policy also continues to be an... |

This paper analyzes the market and welfare effects of the introduction of GM products in small open developing economies that, prior to the adoption of GM crops, were net exporters of non-GM products. It explicitly accounts for differences in consumer attitudes towards GM products and producer agronomic characteristics as well as for the structure and conduct of the GM seed suppliers. Different scenarios concerning different labeling regimes in the small exporting country and the world market of the products are considered. A positive welfare effect of the introduction of GM products to small open economies should not be taken for granted. While yield increases and cost reductions associated with the GM technology are certainly important, their presence... |
