ESTIMATION OF SUPPLY AND DEMAND ELASTICITIES OF CALIFORNIA COMMODITIES AgEcon
Russo, Carlo; Green, Richard D.; Howitt, Richard E..
The primary purpose of this paper is to provide updated estimates of domestic own-price, cross-price and income elasticities of demand and estimated price elasticities of supply for various California commodities. Flexible functional forms including the Box-Cox specification and the nonlinear almost ideal demand system are estimated and bootstrap standard errors obtained. Partial adjustment models are used to model the supply side. These models provide good approximations in which to obtain elasticity estimates. The six commodities selected represent some of the highest valued crops in California. The commodities are: almonds, walnuts, alfalfa, cotton, rice, and tomatoes (fresh and processed). All of the estimated own-price demand elasticities are...

FORECASTING MARKET SHARE USING A FLEXIBLE LOGISTIC MODEL AgEcon
Quagrainie, Kwamena K..
There is a strong competition from low-priced imported catfish fillets resulting in a declining market share for domestic farm-raised catfish fillets. To match the competition, catfish processors are embarking on pricing policy measures that are volume-oriented instead of profit- or image-oriented. This could be an effective short-run pricing policy measure for optimal long-run sustainability and profitability of the industry. Volume pricing strategies are aimed at meeting target sales volumes or market shares. This paper explores and compares the performance of the standard logit, the inverse power transformation (IPT) logit and the logarithmic version of the inverse power transformation logit models in terms of generating forecasts for market share...

Are consumers beef quality perceptions in accordance with objective beef quality? AgEcon
Banović, Marija; Cristina Monteiro, Ana; Lemos, Jose Pedro Cardoso; Madalena Barreira, Maria; Fontes, Magda Aguiar.
The consumer has the final word in food choice, which is determined by his perceived quality. Within a project coordinated by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine we tried to relate objective quality with the consumer quality evaluation. To do so, we have measured the expected and experienced quality of a sample of Portuguese consumers towards three types of beef (PDO, national and imported) at the shop, and compared this subjective evaluation with the beef objective quality. Results at the consumer level show that respondents perceived PDO beef to be of higher quality than the two other types of beef for different attributes and for overall quality at the shop location. In terms of objective quality results, the three types of beef showed highly similar...

Consumer Preferences for U.S. Pork in Urban China AgEcon
Ortega, David L.; Wang, H. Holly; Wu, Laping.
China’s transition into a developed economy is driving changes in consumer preferences and demand for foods. To evaluate consumer preferences for U.S. pork in urban China, primary data were collected in two metropolitan areas- Beijing and Shanghai. Estimated logit models revealed that an individual’s age, shopping location and food safety concerns significantly influenced their willingness-to-pay for U.S. pork. A proportional linear model was developed to evaluate factors affecting purchasing behavior of western-style pork cuts vs. traditional Chinese cuts. Food safety concerns were linked to a previous lean-meat additive scare and a lack of consumer confidence on the Chinese food inspection system.

The Determinants of Consumer Choices of Salted Snacks and Prepared Frozen Meals Over Time AgEcon
Everett, Rachel M.; Mojduszka, Eliza M..
We develop and estimate an integrated discrete choice model system of product choice and nutrition information for prepared frozen meals and salted snacks in the United States in the period from 1995 to 1999. The model links consumer observed and latent characteristics (e.g., income, knowledge about nutrition, nutrition label use) to product characteristics (e.g., prices, nutritional attributes) and allows us to obtain consumer preference parameters and demand elasticities with regard to product characteristics. We find that prices, advertising, price reductions, and consumer preferences for taste have a significant effect on the demand for prepared frozen meals and salted snacks, whereas nutrition information and nutrition label use do not. Using the...

THE WINE MARKET IN JAPAN: MARKET COMPETITION AMONG EXPORTING COUNTRIES AND THE STRATEGY OF US WINE AgEcon
Arahata, Katsumi.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the structure of wine consumption in the Japanese market, focusing on the consumption in households. Considering various tendencies of Japanese eating and drinking habits nowadays related to wine consumption, the model was built and empirically estimated. The data to be investigated was household's data from the past twenty-seven years of official statistics. It was found that Japanese households show high income elasticity for wine demand. The strategy to prioritize department store distribution was demonstrated to be effective due to the fact that wine consumption in the high income class is steadily high, while the sensitivity to income and compatibility of foods is higher in middle income classes. However, the...

U.S. Cotton Prices and the World Cotton Market: Forecasting and Structural Change AgEcon
Isengildina-Massa, Olga; MacDonald, Stephen.
The purpose of this study was to analyze structural changes that took place in the cotton industry in recent years and develop a statistical model that reflects the current drivers of U.S. cotton prices. Legislative changes authorized the U.S. Department of Agriculture to resume publishing cotton price forecasts for the first time in 79 years. In addition, systematic problems have become apparent in the forecasting models used by USDA and elsewhere, highlighting the need for an updated review of price relationships. This study concluded that a structural break in the U.S. cotton industry occurred in 1999, and that world cotton supply has become an important determinant of U.S. cotton prices. China’s trade and production policy also continues to be an...

Market and Welfare Effects of GMO Introduction in Small Exporting Countries AgEcon
Plastina, Alejandro S.; Giannakas, Konstantinos.
This paper analyzes the market and welfare effects of the introduction of GM products in small open developing economies that, prior to the adoption of GM crops, were net exporters of non-GM products. It explicitly accounts for differences in consumer attitudes towards GM products and producer agronomic characteristics as well as for the structure and conduct of the GM seed suppliers. Different scenarios concerning different labeling regimes in the small exporting country and the world market of the products are considered. A positive welfare effect of the introduction of GM products to small open economies should not be taken for granted. While yield increases and cost reductions associated with the GM technology are certainly important, their presence...

A mixed-method approach for determining the risk and complexity farmers associate with using forward contracts AgEcon
Jackson, Elizabeth; Quaddus, Mohammed; Islam, Nazrul; Stanton, John.
This paper reports on a model that was developed to understand the behavioural determinants surrounding farmers’ adoption of forward contracts for agricultural commodities. Based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour and Diffusion of Innovations, 28 hypotheses within the model were written and then tested via a telephone survey that gathered 305 responses from Western Australian wool producers. The data from the telephone survey were analysed using SPSS 14 and the Partial Least Squares approach to Structural Equation Modelling. Most relationships within the model could be explained after rigorous quantitative analysis, however, further explanation was required to understand two final aspects of adoption behaviour: firstly, the sources of risk wool...
