Artificial nest predation rates vary depending on visibility in the eastern Brazilian Amazon Acta Amazonica
Michalski,Fernanda; Norris,Darren.
Observational and experimental studies have shown that increased concealment of bird nests reduces nest predation rates. The objective of the present study was to evaluate differences in predation rates between two experimental manipulations of artificial ground nests (i.e., clearing an area around the artificial nest or leaving it as natural as possible), and test whether environmental variables also affected nest predation in an undisturbed area of Amazonian forest in eastern Brazil. A generalized linear model was used to examine the influence of five variables (manipulation type, perpendicular distance from the main trail, total basal area of trees surrounding the nest site, understorey density, and liana quantity) on nest predation rates. Model...

Saline distribution during multicomponent salting in pre-cooked quail eggs Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Borsato,Dionísio; Moreira,Mariete Barbosa; Moreira,Ivanira; Pina,Marcos Vinicios Roberto; Silva,Rui Sergio dos Santos Ferreira da; Bona,Evandro.
The relationship of NaCl with problems of arterial hypertension has led to a reduction in the levels of this salt in food production. KCl has been used as a partial substitute for NaCl since it cannot be completely substituted without affecting the acceptability of the end product. In this study, the diffusion that occurs during quail egg salting in static and stirred brine was simulated. The mathematical model used was based on a generalization of the Fick's 2nd law, and the COMSOL Multiphysics software was used to simulate the diffusion in the NaCl-KCl-water system. The deviations in the simulated data and experimental data were 2.50% for NaCl and 6.98% for KCl in static brine, while in the stirred brine they were 3.48% for NaCl and 4.72% for KCl. The...

Usability of CART algorithm for determining egg quality characteristics influencing fertility in the eggs of Japanese quail R. Bras. Zootec.
Çelik,Şenol; Söğüt,Bünyamin; Şengül,Turgay; Eyduran,Ecevit; Şengül,Ahmet Yusuf.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to determine the effects of egg quality characteristics (egg weight, egg width, egg height, and shape index) on fertility of eggs of Japanese quail with different colored feathers (yellow, white, grizzled, and normal), which are of economic importance for poultry production. For this purpose, 383 eggs of Japanese quail with various feather colors were used. In the study, usability of classification and regression tree (CART) data-mining algorithm as a classification tree method is necessary for poultry breeders to define proper cut-off values of egg quality characteristics that ensure Japanese quail eggs at good quality in fertility. Fertility as the dependent variable in the study was examined as a binary trait...
