Tocopherol profile of Brazil nut oil from different geographic areas of the Amazon region 36
Funasaki,Mariko; Menezes,Ingrid Sabino; Barroso,Hiléia dos Santos; Zanotto,Sandra Patricia; Carioca,Cláudia Regina Ferreira.
The tocopherol content of Brazil nut oil from different Amazon regions (Manicoré-AM, Rio Preto da Eva-AM, São João da Baliza-RR, Caroebe-RR, Belém-PA, and Xapurí-AC) was investigated by normal-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. For all authentic oils, two isomers: α- and γ-tocopherols were observed (37.92-74.48 µg g-1, 106.88-171.80 µg g-1, respectively), and their levels were relatively constant among the oils having these geographic origins, which would enable to distinguish Brazil nut oil from other plant oils for authentication purposes. Commercial Brazil nut oils were also evaluated, and some of these oils demonstrated a tocopherol content that was very different from that of the authentic oils. Therefore, we suggest that the tocopherol...

Gomes Junior, Francisco Guilhien; Universidade de São Paulo; Chamma, Helena Maria Carmignani Pescarin; Universidade de São Paulo; Cicero, Silvio Moure; Universidade de São Paulo.
Quickly and precise evaluations of the vigor of seeds are highly desirable for the success of quality control programs applied to the seed industry. The objective of this experiment was to determine the number of days necessary to calculate the vigor index of common bean seeds using an automated system of seedling images (SVIS®), and compare its results with the traditional tests of seed vigor. Samples of five seed lots of the IAC Carioca cultivar were submitted to germination, accelerated aging, seedling emergence in sand and electrical conductivity tests. The parameters measured by the Seed Vigor Imaging System (SVIS®) were mean seedling length, growth (ratio of the actual seedling growth to the maximum possible growth), uniformity of growth and the...

Quality assessment of Trichogramma parasitoids (Trichogramma spp.) from six mexican insectaries 115
González-Cabrera,Jaime; Arredondo-Bernal,Hugo C.; Stouthamer,Richard.
Quality of mass-reared biological control agents is vital. There are reports that Trichogramma spp. failed to control the target pest, and poor quality may explain these failures. The first goal of this study was to determine which way of reproduction was practiced by Trichogramma spp. colonies from Mexican insectaries, either sexual or asexual, and the second goal was to determine whether those Trichogramma spp. colonies meet the quality standards suggested by the International Organization for Biological Control/ European Community (IOBC/EC). In March 2010, a letter was sent to 27 Trichogramma spp. producers. Six insectaries agreed to participate and sent dead samples of its colonies, a total of 10 colonies. For statistical analysis these colonies were...

Physicochemical quality profiles of commercial oral tablets and capsules containing lutein – impact of insufficient specific sanitary regulations 42
ANSELMO,CARINA DE S.; MENDES,THAMARA C.; CABRAL,LUCIO M.; SOUSA,VALÉRIA P. DE.
Abstract Dietary supplements in many countries such as the USA do not require registration prior to commercialization. The Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária (ANVISA) registers substances with functional properties as foods. Lutein is a carotenoid with antioxidant activity available on the market. However, no regulatory mandates exist to govern the design of quality control tests, which are necessary to ensure formulation effectiveness. Therefore, in the present study, tablet and dosage formulations from different manufacturers were tested following general methods outlined in the Brazilian and American Pharmacopeias. The averageweight, disintegration, content and dose uniformity assays were performed for all tablets and capsules, whereas hardness...

A spreadsheet for calculation of ingredients for standardization of requeijão cremoso 45
Silva,R.C.S.N.; Minim,V.P.R.; Silva,A.N.; Carvalho,A.F.; Minim,L.A..
The standardization of requeijão cheese quality characteristics is a processing stage which is directly influenced by the chemical composition of the raw material. Fat and water concentrations are the main factors that cause variation in quality properties of the requeijão and, when not thoroughly controlled, may cause a lack in standardization of the food. Calculations of ingredients for effective standardization must be made in relation to the final product through of iterative calculations, which makes the manual process unfeasible. Thus, the objective of the present study was to develop a spreadsheet for ingredient calculation, with restrictions being the different concentrations of fat and water in order to standardize the final products. The...

Morelli,Renata; Costa,Karen Zamboni; Fagioni,Kenya Martins; Costa,Maria de Lourdes Zamboni; Nascimento,Antônio Souza do; Pimentel,Rodrigo Meirelles de Azevedo; Walder,Julio Marcos Melges.
The aim of this study was to find alternatives to reduce the cost of mass production of the South American fruit fly (A. fraterculus) by looking for locally available products as protein source in the diet of adults to replace the imported product without changing the quality parameters. Two yeast from a Brazilian company were evaluated. The quality parameters showed that the imported hydrolyzed yeast used in the adult diet could be perfectly replaced by the local products tested, with a reduction of over 80% of the cost of the diet. The quality of the produced insects remained the same and there were improvements in some quality parameters such as the volume of eggs produced, number of adults flying and longevity under the stress.

Ladwig,R.; Vigo,A.; Fedeli,L.M.G.; Chambless,L.E.; Bensenor,I.; Schmidt,M.I.; Vidigal,P.G.; Castilhos,C.D.; Duncan,B.B..
Multi-center epidemiological studies must ascertain that their measurements are accurate and reliable. For laboratory measurements, reliability can be assessed through investigation of reproducibility of measurements in the same individual. In this paper, we present results from the quality control analysis of the baseline laboratory measurements from the ELSA-Brasil study. The study enrolled 15,105 civil servants at 6 research centers in 3 regions of Brazil between 2008–2010, with multiple biochemical analytes being measured at a central laboratory. Quality control was ascertained through standard laboratory evaluation of intra- and inter-assay variability and test-retest analysis in a subset of randomly chosen participants. An additional sample of urine...

Efficacy, safety, quality control, marketing and regulatory guidelines for herbal medicines (phytotherapeutic agents) 56
Calixto,J.B..
This review highlights the current advances in knowledge about the safety, efficacy, quality control, marketing and regulatory aspects of botanical medicines. Phytotherapeutic agents are standardized herbal preparations consisting of complex mixtures of one or more plants which contain as active ingredients plant parts or plant material in the crude or processed state. A marked growth in the worldwide phytotherapeutic market has occurred over the last 15 years. For the European and USA markets alone, this will reach about $7 billion and $5 billion per annum, respectively, in 1999, and has thus attracted the interest of most large pharmaceutical companies. Insufficient data exist for most plants to guarantee their quality, efficacy and safety. The idea that...

Alternative chromatographic system for the quality control of lipophilic technetium-99m radiopharmaceuticals such as [99mTc(MIBI)6]+ 56
Faria,D.P.; Buchpiguel,C.A.; Marques,F.L.N..
Knowledge of the radiochemical purity of radiopharmaceuticals is mandatory and can be evaluated by several methods and techniques. Planar chromatography is the technique normally employed in nuclear medicine since it is simple, rapid and usually of low cost. There is no standard system for the chromatographic technique, but price, separation efficiency and short time for execution must be considered. We have studied an alternative system using common chromatographic stationary phase and alcohol or alcohol:chloroform mixtures as the mobile phase, using the lipophilic radiopharmaceutical [99mTc(MIBI)6]+ as a model. Quality control for microbiological culture media: Is it enough to follow the NCCLS M22-A2 procedures? 58
Cantarelli,Vlademir Vicente; Inamine,Everton; Brodt,Teresa Cristina Zenobin; Secchi,Carina; Pereira,Fabiana de Souza; Amaro,Maria Cristina; Batalha,Alice Aurora; Ligiero,Simone Dornellas.
Stringent quality control protocols must be used in order to guaranty that a particular medium is able to recover all sort of organism that may be present in clinical samples. Our aim was to evaluate an alternative protocol that would allow us to detect medium failure to yield quantitative growth of selected pathogens, and compare with the document M22-A2 from NCCLS. The detection limit of Haemophilus influenzae was significantly different depending on media source. We conclude that for some fastidious microorganisms, quantitative verification of the growth capacity of the culture medium is advised.

Development and validation of a microbiological assay for determination of chlorhexidine digluconate in aqueous solution 60
Fiorentino,Flávia Angélica Másquio; Corrêa,Marcos Antonio; Salgado,Hérida Regina Nunes.
Chlorhexidine (CHX) is a broad-spectrum antiseptic that is used in many topical pharmaceutical formulations. Because there is no official microbiological assay reported in the literature that is used to quantify CHX, this paper reports the development and validation of a simple, sensitive, accurate and reproducible agar diffusion method for the dosage of chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX-D) in an aqueous solution. The assay is based on the inhibitory effect of CHX-D upon the strain of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, which is used as the test microorganism. The design 3x3 parallel-line model was used. The results were treated statistically by analysis of variance (ANOVA), and they were excellent in terms of linearity (r = 0.9999), presenting a significant...
