Use of plant resources in a seasonal dry forest (Northeastern Brazil) Acta Botanica
Albuquerque,Ulysses Paulino de; Andrade,Laise de Holanda Cavalcanti; Silva,Ana Carolina Oliveira de.
To study the use of plant resources by a rural community in a seasonal dry forest, plots were established in a disturbed area and in a relatively preserved area. The study was carried out in caatinga vegetation located at the municipality of Alagoinha (08º27'59" S and 36º46'33" W), state of Pernambuco, Northeastern Brazil. The results show a pattern of medicinal resources offering similar to that found in other tropical forests, in which the disturbed areas or those of secondary vegetation are a major source of medicinal plants. Nevertheless, a new pattern was evidenced as it was found that disturbed areas are not preferred by local people, and that it may be related to temporal availability of resources (adaptation to the characteristic seasonality of the...

What are the drivers of popularity and versatility of medicinal plants in local medical systems? Acta Botanica
Caetano,Roberta de Almeida; Albuquerque,Ulysses Paulino de; Medeiros,Patrícia Muniz de.
ABSTRACT The cultural importance of medicinal plants has been measured in terms of popularity (number of people who know a plant) and versatility (number of therapeutic indications mentioned for a plant). Previous works have provided evidence about some drivers of medicinal plant importance, such as attributes of availability, efficiency, palatability and taste. The present study tested whether local perception of efficiency, availability (ease of acquisition), palatability (degree of pleasantness), and taste influence the popularity and versatility of medicinal plants in two rural communities of Buíque, Brazil. Free-listing was applied to identify the medicinal plants known/utilized in the communities, while semi-structured interviews were performed to...

Fruits of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest: allying biodiversity conservation and food security Anais da ABC (AABC)
SOUZA,ROBERTA G. DE; DAN,MAURÍCIO L.; DIAS-GUIMARÃES,MARISTELA A.; GUIMARÃES,LORENA A.O.P.; BRAGA,JOÃO MARCELO A..
Abstract Supplying food to growing human populations without depleting natural resources is a challenge for modern human societies. Considering this, the present study has addressed the use of native arboreal species as sources of food for rural populations in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The aim was to reveal species composition of edible plants, as well as to evaluate the practices used to manage and conserve them. Ethnobotanical indices show the importance of many native trees as local sources of fruits while highlighting the preponderance of the Myrtaceae family. Conservation analysis allowed to identify Campomanesia hirsuta Gardner and Plinia edulis (Vell.) Sobral as being of high Biological Value and Conservation Priority. In spite of that, the...
