Caste differences in Pseudopolybia compressa (Hymenoptera: Vespidae: Polistinae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Pizarro,Laura Chavarría; Noll,Fernando B.; Mateus,Sidnei.
Studies of morphological caste syndromes in the tribe Epiponini help us to understand the evolution of social behavior in insects. Few studies have integrated morphological syndromes of various species from the same or distinct genera. We studied morphological differences between castes from three colonies of Pseudopolybia compressa de Saussure, 1854, in order to relate their caste syndrome with those of other species in the genus. We took eight morphometric measures and females were classified in relation to ovarian development and spermathecal contents. Females of Colony 1 (C1) present a higher distinction between castes than females of Colonies 2 and 3 (C2 and C3), and, in general, queens of the three colonies are larger than workers in some measures...

Leucogram and serum acute phase protein concentrations in queens submitted to conventional or videolaparoscopic ovariectomy Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Alves,A.E.; Ribeiro,A.P.C.; Di Filippo,P.A.; Apparicio,M.F.; Fagliari,J.J.; Vicente,W.R.R..
Thirty health queens were submitted to ovariectomy by conventional technique or by videolaparoscopy. In order to study the intensity of inflammatory response by means of acute phase protein analysis and white blood cell count, serum samples were taken before and until 144 hours after the surgical procedures. The protein concentrations that were significantly increased 24 hours after surgical procedures were: ceruloplasmin, hemopexin, haptoglobin, and α1-acid glycoprotein, 69.8%, 103.5%, 117.3%, and 199.0%, respectively, for conventional ovariectomy; and 22.3%, 46.1%, 79.8%, and 74.6%, respectively, for laparoscopic ovariectomy. Therefore, inflammatory response was more intense in queens submitted to conventional ovariectomy. Results indicate that the...

Preliminar report on the presence of tegumentar glands in the thorax of Meliponinae bees (Hymenoptera, Apidae) BJB
CRUZ-LANDIM,C.; REGINATO,R. D..
This is a first report on the presence of glandular cells in the lateral tegument of the mesothorax of Meliponinae bees. The cells are of the insect class III glandular cells and are present in queens, workers and males. The glands are more developed in queens than in workers, and in workers than in males.
