Comparative Quantitative and Qualitative Attributes of the Surface Respiratory Macrophages in the Domestic Duck and the Rabbit International Journal of Morphology
Mutua,P. M; Gicheru,M. M; Makanya,A. N; Kiama,S. G.
In mammals, surface respiratory macrophages (SM) are known to play a foremost role in protecting the respiratory system by providing first line of defense through engulfing pathogens and particulate matter respired with air. It has been reported that the pulmonary cellular defense system of domestic birds is inadequate. In particular, low number of SM and even lack of the cells in a healthy avian respiratory system have been associated with susceptibility of domestic birds to respiratory diseases. In an endeavor to resolve the existing controversy, the quantitative and qualitative attributes of the surface respiratory macrophages of the domestic duck and of the domestic rabbit were compared under similar experimental conditions. Quantitatively, the rabbit...

Morphometry and Vascularization of the Rabbit Kidneys (Oryctolagus cuniculus) International Journal of Morphology
Santos-Sousa,C. A; Stocco,A. V; Mencalha,R; Jorge,S. F; Abidu-Figueiredo,M.
Rabbits have been used as urologic models in many studies. The aim of this study was to characterize the renal morphology and anatomical variations of the renal pedicle in rabbit. The research ethics committee of Rio de Janeiro Federal Rural University approved this study. The animals were obtained from the university's necropsy unit. Dissections were performed in 50 adult rabbits, male and females, without macroscopic renal pathology. Kidney measurements were made with a digital caliper: length, width, and thickness. The length and origin of the renal arteries and main branches and length of the renal veins were also determined. The terminology of Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria was followed. The mean and standard deviation of the length of the right kidney...

Visceral Branches of the Abdominal Aorta in the New Zealand Rabbit: Ten Different Patterns International Journal of Morphology
Arredondo,Jorge; Saucedo,Roberto; Recillas,Sergio; Fajardo,Victor; Castelán,Octavio; González-Ronquillo,Manuel; Hernández,Wendy.
The abdominal aorta of the rabbit has been in the focus of research to develop new platforms of training diagnostic and therapeutic protocols; and for testing endovascular devices and materials, however, few descriptions of the anatomy of the abdominal aorta and its emerging visceral branches has been reported on the scientific literature for this specie. Anatomical variations are common and should have in mind during research and clinical trials. The aim of this study was to describe the different patterns that can occur in the visceral branches arising from the abdominal aorta in the rabbit.

Modified Model of Sub-Critical Size Cranial Defect in the Rabbit International Journal of Morphology
Marques,J. M; Viegas,C; Dias,M. I; Zagalo,C; Gomes,P; Fernandes,M. H; Santos,J. D; Cabrita,S. C.
In medical sciences, any experimental animal model should be reproducible and adequate to the purpose of simulated human physiological response. In bone injury response research, when bone substitutes are in use, it is of primary importance that studied defects fail to heal unless treated with the tissue engineering therapy under study. This failure defines the concept of "critical size defect" (CSD) wich has different limits according to the animal species used and the location of the defect. Although this is a basic concept, when the aim of the study is to investigate the interface Bone-Biomaterial, it is of primary importance to obtain as much contact area as possible. In order to do so, we propose a modified surgical approach to the classical...

Serum kinetics of Calloselasma rhodostoma (Malayan pit viper) venom components in a rabbit J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Tan,NH; Ponnudurai,G; Fung,SY.
The serum kinetics of Calloselasma rhodostoma (Malayan pit viper) venom - specifically two of its components, the major hemorrhagin (rhodostoxin) and a thrombin-like enzyme - was examined in a rabbit by double-sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The animal received intramuscularly a 1.0-mg/kg dose of C. rhodostoma venom. The venom level in serum peaked 12 hours after the injection, followed by a gradual decline and finally reached low rates 72 hours after administration. The serum kinetic profile of venom components, however, did not correspond to the profile of the whole C. rhodostoma venom. The serum levels of the C. rhodostoma thrombin-like enzyme increased slowly and peaked only 48 hours post-injection. Then both thrombin-like enzyme...

The purpose of this experiment is to characterize the aftereffects of myelography of canine spinal cords using rabbits, since the distal end of the spinal cord of rabbits is more caudal than that of dogs. Seroprevalences of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum in Pet Rabbits in Japan OAK
SALMAN, Doaa; OOHASHI, Eiji; MOHAMED, Adel Elsayed Ahmed; ABD EL-MOTTELIB, Abd El-Raheem; OKADA, Tadashi; IGARASHI, Makoto; 五十嵐, 慎.
The potential contamination of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum oocysts in the human environment is a concern from the public health viewpoint. However, estimation of their seroprevalences in humans cannot be performed in a manner that distinguishes between oocysts and tissue cysts as a source of infection. Rabbits are considered popular pet animals in Japan that can acquire natural infections by the aforementioned parasites only through the ingestion of oocysts. Therefore, this study was conducted to estimate the seroprevalences of T. gondii and N. caninum in pet rabbits in Japan as an indicator of the possible oocyst contamination in the environment surrounding human beings. Serum samples of 337 rabbits were examined by different serological...

Polymorphism of the BCO2 gene and the content of carotenoids, retinol, and α-tocopherol in the liver and fat of rabbits R. Bras. Zootec.
Strychalski,Janusz; Gugołek,Andrzej; Brym,Paweł; Antoszkiewicz,Zofia; Chwastowska-Siwiecka,Iwona.
ABSTRACT The study was carried out to evaluate the effect of AAT-deletion mutation at codon 248 of the BCO2 gene on the content of lutein, β-carotene, retinol, and α-tocopherol in the liver and fat of crossbred rabbits. The experimental animals comprised 90 rabbits, produced by reciprocal crossing between ins/del heterozygous parents of Flemish Giant, New Zealand Red, and Termond White breeds. All rabbits in the litter were genotyped, given the same diet, and finally slaughtered at 140 d of age. It was found that regardless of the mating scheme employed, all del/del homozygotes had the yellow fat trait, whereas heterozygous and homozygotes animals without the AAT deletion (ins/ins) developed white fat. Lutein concentration in fat was over 13-fold higher in...

The use of maize ear in rabbit diets: nutritive value and effect on fattenning performance Agrociencia
Martínez,Melida; Moya,Vicente J.; Blas,Enrique; Cervera,Concepción.
The nutritive value of maize ear for rabbits was determined by substitution of a standard diet (diet C) with 20 and 40% of maize ear (diets M20 and M40). Two experiments were carried out. In the first one, digestibility trials for dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP) and gross energy (GE) were performed with 24 rabbits. In the second experiment, 200 young rabbits were divided in two groups at weaning (28 d) and fed ad libitum with diets C and M20 up to 63 d of age. Feed intake and live weight gain were recorded from weaning to slaughter, and feed conversion ratio was calculated. The principal component of maize ear is the grain (88%) and, consequently, the chemical composition of maize ear is similar to corn, except for its higher fibre content. The...

Effects of insulin and actin on phosphofructokinase activity and cellular distribution in skeletal muscle Anais da ABC (AABC)
Silva,Ana Paula P.; Alves,Gutemberg G.; Araújo,Alexandre H.B.; Sola-Penna,Mauro.
In this work, we report evidences that the association of phosphofructokinase and F-actin can be affected by insulin stimulation in rabbit skeletal muscle homogenates and that this association can be a mechanism of phos-phofructokinase regulation. Through co-sedimentation techniques, we observed that on insulin-stimulated tissues, approximately 70% of phosphofructokinase activity is co-located in an actin-enriched fraction, against 28% in control. This phenomenon is accompanied by a 100% increase in specific phosphofructokinase activity in stimulated homogenates. Purified F-actin causes an increase of 230% in phosphofructokinase activity and alters its kinetic parameters. The presence of F-actin increases the affinity of phosphofructokinase for fructose...

ABSTRACT Ischemia is responsible for many metabolic abnormalities in the heart, causing changes in organ function. One of modifications occurring in the ischemic cell is changing from aerobic to anaerobic metabolism. This change causes the predominance of the use of carbohydrates as an energy substrate instead of lipids. In this case, the glycogen is essential to the maintenance of heart energy intake, being an important reserve to resist the stress caused by hypoxia, using glycolysis and lactic acid fermentation. In order to study the glucose anaerobic pathways utilization and understand the metabolic adaptations, New Zealand white rabbits were subjected to ischemia caused by Inflow occlusion technique. The animals were monitored during surgery by pH and...

The peculiarities of the masticator muscles in rodents Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Spataru,C.; Spataru,M.; Vulpe,V.; Lazar,M..
Comparative research concerning masticatory musculature in squirrel, muskrat and rabbit, take into account the emphasizing and morphofunctional interpretation of the osteomuscular particularities involved in the prehension and mastication processes. The development of the coronoid process on the muskrat and squirrel demonstrates the growing of the force when raising the mandible by increasing the action force attached to the temporal muscle, with insertion on the coronoid process. In comparison with that, in the case of rabbits, both the coronoid process and the temporal muscle are reduced. From a philogenetic point of view, it has been found that the species that have the articular condyle lowered at or under the level of the dental tables (carnivores)...
