In this study, 139 radiographs of the Rottweiller breed dog, 44 males and 95 females were evaluated. Radiographs were classified by the degree of hip dysplasia, and we measured the angle of inclination, Norberg angle, the cortical index and percentage of coverage of the femoral head on both sides. The aim of this study was to evaluate that parameters based on gender and age of animals correlating them with the incidence and severity of hip dysplasia. In dysplastic dogs the mean Norberg angle was 100.09 ± 7.86 °, the mean percent coverage of the femoral head was 41.50 ± 8.59%, the mean femoral cortical index was 0.33 ± 0.04, and the femoral angle mean was 153.06 ± 9.81 °. Higher inclination angles were associated with smaller angles of Norberg and lowest... |

ABSTRACT Often, in pet birds, any stimulus to lay eggs is unwanted in order to reduce reproductive diseases and disorders. The objectives of this study were: to determine the time necessary to promote ovary involution after an eight hour photoperiod using laying Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica); to connect the ovarian radiographic measurements with egg production; and to compare these measurements with direct ovary data obtained at necropsy. Birds were separated into three groups: 12h/24d (control group - 12h photoperiod for 24 days), 8h/24d and 8h/36d (8h photoperiod for 24 and 36 days). After euthanasia, all cadavers were x-rayed to measure ovary length and height. Birds were necropsied to measure ovarian length and weight. Results:... |

ABSTRACT Femoral angle, femur length, and hip width were measured in radiographs of 92 intact domestic cats, males and females of mixed breed from the Center for Zoonosis Control of the Federal District. The animals showed no trauma, orthopedic diseases or angular deformities and had closed physeal lines. Accordingly, we measured aLPFA (anatomical lateral proximal femoral angle, aLDFA (anatomical lateral distal femoral angle), mLPFA (mechanical lateral proximal femoral angle), mLDFA (mechanical lateral distal femoral angle), IA (femoral inclination angle), FL (femur length) and HW (hip width) using ventrodorsal radiographs, with both hindlimbs in a single exposure to an X-ray beam centered on the hip. The mean values of the variables were: mLPFA:... |

A seven month old female goat showed neck swelling, apathy, appetite and weight loss, restlessness, increased salivation, cough, and regurgitation episodes which occurred post feeding. The animal was evaluated through both clinical and radiographic examinations. Plain radiography was performed and contrasted X-ray was done using barium sulfate. For radiological examination, the lateral projection was used for analysis. The results showed a radiopaque content in the esophageal lumen dorsally positioned to heart with density and appearance similar to the rumen. A dilation of the esophagus was reported and a diagnosis of megaesophagus was made. In conclusion, contrast esophagography must be included in the diagnosis of megaesophagus in goats. |

INTRODUCTION: Traditional reading of chest X-rays usually has a low prognostic value and poor agreement. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the interobserver and intraobserver agreement using two reading formats in patients with community-acquired pneumonia, and to explore their association with etiology and clinical outcomes. METHODS: A pulmonologist and a radiologist, who were blind to clinical data, interpreted 211 radiographs using a traditional analysis format (type and location of pulmonary infiltrates and pleural findings), and a quantitative analysis (pulmonary damage categorized from 0 to 10). For both, the interobserver and intraobserver agreement was estimated (Kappa statistic and intraclass correlation coefficient). The latter was... |

In the present experimental study we assessed induced osteoarthritis data in rabbits, compared three diagnostic methods, i.e., radiography (XR), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and correlated the imaging findings with those obtained by macroscopic evaluation. Ten young female rabbits of the Norfolk breed were used. Seven rabbits had the right knee immobilized in extension for a period of 12 weeks (immobilized group), and three others did not have a limb immobilized and were maintained under the same conditions (control group). Alterations observed by XR, CT and MRI after the period of immobilization were osteophytes, osteochondral lesions, increase and decrease of joint space, all of them present both in the immobilized and... |

The aim of this study was to assess a bilateral comparison of the mandible density in both sex young patients with computer densitometry. Fifty panoramic radiographs were obtained from young patients with ages between 18 and 23 years old (group A = 25 female and group B = 25 male) standardized, using the same X-Ray equipment (Siemens, lOKvp, 7mA), scanned with a 282.110 pixels resolution, and transferred later to a computer and using the SIDEXIS (Sirona, USA) program to analyze the bone densitometry performance. Bilateral sites were standardized with the objective to measure the bone density. Obtained data were registered and submitted to statistical analysis. The following means and standard deviations were obtained, in pixels, for the right and the left... |

Pycnodysostosis is a rare genetic syndrome characterized by short stature, obtuse mandibular angle, frontal, parietal and occipital bossing, open fontanels and cranial sutures, midfacial hypoplasia, acro-osteolysis of the distal phalanges, increased bone density, absence or hipopneumatization of the paranasal sinuses and normal laboratory studies. We report the case of a 35-year-old Brazilian man that was referred to a private clinic with history of dysmorphic facies for evaluation. The clinical and radiological features exhibited by the patient led to a diagnosis of pycnodysostosis. We describe the morphological features of pycnodysostosis with emphasis on the clinical and radiographic maxillofacial findings comparing the data obtained from our case with... |

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the newly formed bone, comparing two different carriers for rhBMP-2, using the decortication and nondecorticatication surgical technique in Wistar rat mandibles, evaluated by radiographic densitometry method. It was used fifty six animals according to specific treatment, which were sacrificed after 3 and 6 weeks after this. It was concluded that the decortication surgical technique was able to optimize the osteoinduction properties of the rhBMP-2, independently of the material carrier used and the period of time, according to radiographic densitometry technique. |

The urinary bladder infection, having glucose-fermentingmicroorganisms such as pathogens is the disease called asemphysematous cystitis. These microorganism are ableto produce balls of gas in the bladder lumen. The mostfrequent bacteria associated with this pathology are: Proteussp, Aerobacteraerogenous, Escherichia coli and Clostridiumspp. The causes are nonspecific and are usually secondary toseveral conditions as diabetes mellitus, hyperadrenocorticism, anatomical defects, urolithiasis, tumours, prolongedcorticosteroid therapy, bladder wall thickening caused by chronicinflammation, and not ruling out the possibility of reportsin dogs not diabetic. The clinical sings are also nonspecific:dysuria, hematuria, urinary frequency, abdominal pain,apathy.... |
