Genuíno,P.C.; Miranda,F.G.; Rezende,C.M.F.; Tôrres,R.C.S..
In this study, 139 radiographs of the Rottweiller breed dog, 44 males and 95 females were evaluated. Radiographs were classified by the degree of hip dysplasia, and we measured the angle of inclination, Norberg angle, the cortical index and percentage of coverage of the femoral head on both sides. The aim of this study was to evaluate that parameters based on gender and age of animals correlating them with the incidence and severity of hip dysplasia. In dysplastic dogs the mean Norberg angle was 100.09 ± 7.86 °, the mean percent coverage of the femoral head was 41.50 ± 8.59%, the mean femoral cortical index was 0.33 ± 0.04, and the femoral angle mean was 153.06 ± 9.81 °. Higher inclination angles were associated with smaller angles of Norberg and lowest...

Diagnostic value of computed tomography, radiography and ultrasonography in metacarpophalangeal joint disorders in horses Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Machado,V.M.V.; Aguiar,A.C.S.; Viana,G.F.; Crosignani,N.O.; Puoli Filho,J.N.P..
In modern society the work and athletic performance of horses has led to a very important animal production sector in which Brazil possesses the third largest horse stock. Among all equine lesions described, metacarpophalangeal (fetlock) joint lesions are considered one of the main causes of lameness. Consequently, there is a need to improve the understanding and diagnosis of these injuries. The most efficient imaging diagnostic methods for the fetlock region are computed tomography, radiography and ultrasound. Imaging studies of the anatomical structures involving this joint are extremely important to obtain a more precise diagnose. The present study was performed in order to evaluate the capacity of different imaging diagnostic modalities to detect a...

Ovarian radiographic and direct measurements of Japanese Quail ( Coturnix coturnix japonica ) submitted to light restriction Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Albuquerque,M.; Guedes,R.; Dornbusch,P.; Laskoski,L.; Mangini,P.; Lange,R..
ABSTRACT Often, in pet birds, any stimulus to lay eggs is unwanted in order to reduce reproductive diseases and disorders. The objectives of this study were: to determine the time necessary to promote ovary involution after an eight hour photoperiod using laying Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica); to connect the ovarian radiographic measurements with egg production; and to compare these measurements with direct ovary data obtained at necropsy. Birds were separated into three groups: 12h/24d (control group - 12h photoperiod for 24 days), 8h/24d and 8h/36d (8h photoperiod for 24 and 36 days). After euthanasia, all cadavers were x-rayed to measure ovary length and height. Birds were necropsied to measure ovarian length and weight. Results:...

Measurements of femoral angles, femur length, and hip width in cat radiographs Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Fonseca,R.L.; Lobo-Jr,A.R.; Santana,M.I.S..
ABSTRACT Femoral angle, femur length, and hip width were measured in radiographs of 92 intact domestic cats, males and females of mixed breed from the Center for Zoonosis Control of the Federal District. The animals showed no trauma, orthopedic diseases or angular deformities and had closed physeal lines. Accordingly, we measured aLPFA (anatomical lateral proximal femoral angle, aLDFA (anatomical lateral distal femoral angle), mLPFA (mechanical lateral proximal femoral angle), mLDFA (mechanical lateral distal femoral angle), IA (femoral inclination angle), FL (femur length) and HW (hip width) using ventrodorsal radiographs, with both hindlimbs in a single exposure to an X-ray beam centered on the hip. The mean values of the variables were: mLPFA:...

Aspectos clínicos e radiográficos de caprino com megaesôfago Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Silva Júnior,L.C.; Arruda,L.C.P.; Silva,D.G.B.; Soares,F.A.P.; Borba Neto,A.V.; Leite,J.E.B.; Soares,P.C..
A seven month old female goat showed neck swelling, apathy, appetite and weight loss, restlessness, increased salivation, cough, and regurgitation episodes which occurred post feeding. The animal was evaluated through both clinical and radiographic examinations. Plain radiography was performed and contrasted X-ray was done using barium sulfate. For radiological examination, the lateral projection was used for analysis. The results showed a radiopaque content in the esophageal lumen dorsally positioned to heart with density and appearance similar to the rumen. A dilation of the esophagus was reported and a diagnosis of megaesophagus was made. In conclusion, contrast esophagography must be included in the diagnosis of megaesophagus in goats.

Food passage time through the alimentary tract of a brazilian teleost fish, Prochilodus scrofa (Steindachner, 1881) using radiography Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
BARBIERI,Renato Lamounier; LEITE,Rodolpho Guião; STERMAN,Franklin de Almeida; HERNANDEZ-BLAZQUEZ,Francisco Javier.
Food passage time through the digestive tract of a detritivorous freshwater fish (Prochilodus scrofa) was determinate by radiographic techniques using barium sulfate as a contrast medium. The fish were kept in tanks at a constant temperature of 23.5ºC and received by an oral catheter a mixture of 2.5 parts of ground ration and 1 part of oral suspension of contrast medium (Celobar). Radiographs were taken at intervals of 3 hours. Immediately after the introduction of the mixture the stomach was outlined by the contrast. A sphincter was observed between the cardiac and the muscular stomachs. After 3 hours, 80 per cent of the proximal intestine was filled. After 6 hours the contrast reached the proximal, medial and distal portions of the intestine. After 9...

Reading and interpretation of chest X-ray in adults with community-acquired pneumonia BJID
Moncada,Diana Carolina; Rueda,Zulma Vanessa; Macías,Antonio; Suárez,Tatiana; Ortega,Héctor; Vélez,Lázaro Agustín.
INTRODUCTION: Traditional reading of chest X-rays usually has a low prognostic value and poor agreement. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the interobserver and intraobserver agreement using two reading formats in patients with community-acquired pneumonia, and to explore their association with etiology and clinical outcomes. METHODS: A pulmonologist and a radiologist, who were blind to clinical data, interpreted 211 radiographs using a traditional analysis format (type and location of pulmonary infiltrates and pleural findings), and a quantitative analysis (pulmonary damage categorized from 0 to 10). For both, the interobserver and intraobserver agreement was estimated (Kappa statistic and intraclass correlation coefficient). The latter was...

Radiography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging at 0.5 Tesla of mechanically inducedosteoarthritis in rabbit knees BJMBR
Torelli,S.R.; Rahal,S.C.; Volpi,R.S.; Yamashita,S.; Mamprim,M.J.; Crocci,A.J..
In the present experimental study we assessed induced osteoarthritis data in rabbits, compared three diagnostic methods, i.e., radiography (XR), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and correlated the imaging findings with those obtained by macroscopic evaluation. Ten young female rabbits of the Norfolk breed were used. Seven rabbits had the right knee immobilized in extension for a period of 12 weeks (immobilized group), and three others did not have a limb immobilized and were maintained under the same conditions (control group). Alterations observed by XR, CT and MRI after the period of immobilization were osteophytes, osteochondral lesions, increase and decrease of joint space, all of them present both in the immobilized and...

Pires,Sâmara Turbay; Hage,Maria Cristina Ferrarini Nunes Soares; Pinto,Ana Carolina Brandão de Campos Fonseca; Hagen,Stefano Carlo Filippo.
ABSTRACT: This study compared radiographic and B-mode and Doppler ultrasound exams of the thoracic cavity, excluding the heart, in canine and feline species, in which the radiographs revealed the formation of a potential acoustic window. The objectives were to demonstrate the advantages and limitations of each technique and to determine whether the additional information influenced the differential diagnosis as well as the outcome of each case. The advantages of B-mode ultrasonography included: better qualitative and quantitative evaluation of pleural effusions, an improved ability to determine whether a nodule was solid or cystic and easier determination of the location in the pulmonary parenchyma. The Power Doppler ultrasound evaluated the blood supply...

Photographic and Radiograpic Study of Osteological Abnormalities of the Head of Adult African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) International Journal of Morphology
Olatunji-Akioye,A. O; Adeyemo,O. K; Akomolafe,O. T.
Radiography is a practical screening tool to detect subtle skeletal abnormalities in the adult catfish. Systematic identification of skeletal abnormalities in vertebrates provides an insight into the pathogenesis of skeletal disorders. In the present study; we conducted a mutagenesis screen for skeletal dysplasias in adult catfish, using photography and radiography to assess abnormalities in skeletal anatomy and bone morphology of the head. Two of the fish had skeletal protuberances on the head, while the third had a skeletal depression on the head with associated jaw deformity. However, there was no spinal involvement or other skeletal abnormalities. This study suggests a need for closer monitoring of cultured fish species; including dietary and...

'Aroeira-branca' [Lithraea molleoides (Vell.) Engl. - Anacardiaceae] seed quality evaluation by the X-ray test Scientia Agricola
Machado,Cibele Ferreira; Cícero,Sílvio Moure.
'Aroeira-branca', an arboreal species of great ecological and economic importance, is seed propagated and presents limitations with respect to the availability of methods for seed quality evaluation. The X-ray test has been considered of potential value because it is accurate, quick and nondestructive. In this context, the objective of this work was to verify the possibility of this test to detect damage and/or abnormalities in aroeira-branca embryos, in an attempt to correlate these anomalies to germination. Four seed lots were collected in different locations in the southern region of the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, during 2001. The X-ray test consisted of submitting 100 seeds/lot to radiation (exposure of seeds to radiation of 13 kV/5 minutes) and...
