Spatial patterns of zooplanktivore Chirostoma species (Atherinopsidae) during water-level fluctuation in the shallow tropical Lake Chapala, Mexico: seasonal and interannual analysis Neotropical Ichthyology
Moncayo-Estrada,Rodrigo; Escalera-Gallardo,Carlos; Lind,Owen T..
This study addresses the influence of water-level fluctuations on fish distribution at two temporal scales: seasonal (dry and rainy) and interannual (low and high volume conditions). The analysis of abundance relationships among three zooplanktivore Chirostoma species at fifteen sites in Lake Chapala, Mexico, revealed the significant influence of contrasting conditions (P=0.0002). Seasonally, segregation was more related to species dominance in the dry season and exclusively related to environmental characteristics in the rainy season. Interanually, biotic influence occurred in the shallowest and the deepest episodes of the lake. Environmental characteristics influenced species distribution when the lake reached 25% of its volume. Site, depth, temperature,...

Fish population responses to hydrological variation in a seasonal wetland in southeast México Neotropical Ichthyology
Escalera-Vázquez,Luis H.; Calderón-Cortés,Nancy; Zambrano-González,Luis.
ABSTRACT Hydrological variation differently affects fish species. In the present study, the response of local populations of 13 fish local species to hydrological variation in a tropical wetland was evaluated. The objectives were to analyze the abundance response of fish species with distinct life history strategies and to assess the role of hydrological variation on fish population patterns. We found that opportunistic strategists were favored by high hydrological variation in drought periods, the equilibrium strategists were related to stable habitats, and periodic strategists were regulated by floods and temperature. However, the life history strategies identified for some species in this study do not correspond to the classification reported in other...

BANK OF WEED SEEDS IN AGROSYSTEMS IN THE BRAZILIAN CERRADO Planta Daninha
CARDOSO,I.S.; SOARES,M.P.; ARAÚJO,V.T.; CABRAL,P.H.R.; JAKELAITIS,A.; MADALÃO,J.C..
ABSTRACT The seed bank is the reserve of viable seeds found in the soil and is related to diversity and abundance of species that make up the weed populations. This study aimed to determine the seed bank in four distinct environments (grazing area, area of vegetables, annual crop area and perennial crop area) in two seasons (rainy and dry season). To determine the seed bank, each environment was divided into four sub-areas of 0.2 hectares, considering that each area was a repetition, totaling 16 experimental units. Samples of 0.8 kg were taken from each area, and each sample was distributed on a plastic tray and allowed to germinate in a greenhouse. The density of the individuals was determined by observing the number of emerging seedlings in the trays,...

Soil CO2 Efflux Measurements by Alkali Absorption and Infrared Gas Analyzer in the Brazilian Semiarid Region Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Ferreira,Carlas Renata Prissila Costa; Antonino,Antonio Celso Dantas; Sampaio,Everardo Valadares de Sá Barreto; Correia,Karina Guedes; Lima,José Romualdo de Sousa; Soares,Willames de Albuquerque; Menezes,Rômulo Simões Cezar.
ABSTRACT The CO2 emission from the soil surface, commonly referred to as soil CO2 efflux (ECO2) or soil respiration, is the sum of processes that include root respiration and microbial activity. Measuring this evolution is important to establish sustainable land use models and to estimate global fluxes of carbon, which affect climate change. Despite its importance, few measurements have been made in areas of the semiarid Brazilian Northeast region, and most of them were made using the alkali absorption method (AA), which can underestimate ECO2. Measurements using AA were compared to measurements using the infrared gas analyzer method (IRGA) over ten months (in rainy and dry seasons), during the day and night, in areas of Caatinga (xeric shrubland and thorn...

Performance of Nellore young bulls on Marandu grass pasture with protein supplementation R. Bras. Zootec.
Moretti,Matheus Henrique; Resende,Flávio Dutra de; Siqueira,Gustavo Rezende; Roth,Anna Paula de Toledo Piza; Custódio,Letícia; Roth,Marcella de Toledo Piza; Campos,Wellington da Costa de; Ferreira,Luiz Henrique.
The objective of this study was to verify the effect of low-intake supplementation on performance of Nellore young bulls kept on Marandu grass pasture. The experiment was divided in two periods: the dry and rainy seasons. Treatments during the dry period were composed of mineral salt with urea and mineral supplement enriched with true protein and additive. In the rainy period treatments were mineral salt and enriched mineral supplement only. Pastures were evaluated and animals were weighed in both evaluation phases. The variables studied were evaluated in a completely randomized design in a split-plot arrangement, where plots were treatments and subplots were the periods within each phase, considering the types of supplementation as treatments. During the...

Uncertainty of the beginning and the end of rainy season which is a result of climate changes from global warming can have a great impact on plant production. This is particularly clear in the Northeast which is mainly rain-fed agriculture. The Office of Agricultural Research and Development Region 3, therefore, studied variation of the beginning and the end of rainy season of the Northeast using rainfall data from Meteorological Station from the year 1981 - 2010, 30 years in total. The data was imported and analyzed using MS Access 2000 and compared to the five-year assessment of spatial data. The analysis of variance was analyzed based on the standard deviation of around 30 years period and spatial mapping was conducted in ArcGIS V9.3. The results showed...
