Bat survey of the lower Juruena River and five new records for the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil Acta Amazonica
DALPONTE,Júlio C.; GREGORIN,Renato; ESTEVES-COSTA,Vanderléia A.; ROCHA,Ednaldo C.; MARCELINO,Rodrigo.
ABSTRACT The northern Brazilian state of Mato Grosso is considered an important biogeographical region, but has many sampling gaps. Apart from the well-documented non volant mammal community in the region, the bat fauna still poorly recorded. The aim of this study was to record the bat species of Juruena National Park, northern Mato Grosso, Brazil. Nineteen sites were sampled using mist-nets placed at ground level and near potential bat roosts. We collected 115 individuals belonging to 35 species and five families, which increased the number of species known for Mato Grosso´s Amazon from 86 to 91. The five new records were: Peropteryx kappleri, Peropteryx leucoptera, Lonchorhina inusitata, Tonatia saurophila, and Artibeus concolor. Our results pointed out...

Ocurrence of the chestnut long-tongued bat Lionycteris spurrelli Thomas, 1913 (Chiroptera, Phyllostomidae) in the Northeastern Atlantic Forest, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Lira,Thais de Castro; Pontes,Antonio Rossano Mendes; Santos,Katharine Raquel Pereira dos.
During an inventory fieldwork carried out at Usina Salgado property in the county of Ipojuca, Pernambuco, Brazil, we captured a Lionycteris spurrelli specimen in a forest fragment known as Mata do Mingú (8° 31' 29" S and 35° 03' 26" W). This marks the first occurrence for the northeast region and therefore, the first record for the state of Pernambuco, widening its distribution area within Atlantic Forest. The extension of the occurrence area points out this record as being the oriental limit for the species.

Caldart,Vinícius Matheus; Iop,Samanta; Santos,Tiago Gomes dos; Cechin,Sonia Zanini.
We record for the first time Crossodactylus schmidti (Anura: Hylodidae) and Proceratophrys avelinoi (Anura: Cycloramphidae) from Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, based on individuals captured in an area of Mesophytic Semideciduous Forest, the Parque Estadual do Turvo, located in the northwest region of the state. These records extend the geographical range for both species in about 60 km from the nearest known locality, the Municipality of San Vicente, Misiones, Argentina. We provide a characterization of the calling site used by males of Crossodactylus schmidti, and we also determined the niche breadth of P. avelinoi regarding to the use of water bodies.

First record of Tigrisoma fasciatum (Such, 1825) (Aves: Ardeidae) in the State of Amapá, Brazil and updated species distribution in Central and South America Biota Neotropica
Kajiki,Lia Nahomi; Togura,Cintia Massumi; Michalski,Fernanda.
The Fasciated Tiger-heron (Tigrisoma fasciatum) is considered endangered in Brazil and Argentina. Although this species has a large range in Central and South America, its records are scattered and scarce. We used a combination of searches in the scientific literature and new field records to provide an updated distributional range of this species. Searches for records and photos of T. fasciatum were conducted using online databases. We also conducted field surveys along the margins of the Araguari and Falsino rivers, in the National Forest of Amapá, a sustainable protected area in the eastern Brazilian Amazon. Our literature review provided a total of 25 new distributional records of T. fasciatum. During our river based surveys we recorded one individual...

First records of the Crested Black-Tyrant (Knipolegus lophotes, Tyrannidae) in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Godoi,Maurício Neves; Costacurta,Marco de Barros; Nunes,Alessandro Pacheco; Patrial,Eduardo Weffort; Morante Filho,José Carlos.
The Crested Black-Tyrant (Knipolegus lophotes) is a member of the Tyrannidae family that occurs throughout open areas in central, southeastern and southern Brazil. Although this species occurs in regions that surround the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, there had never been a recorded sighting in the state. Thus, information on its distribution across Brazil's midwestern region is scarce. In this study, we report the first sightings of K. lophotes in Mato Grosso do Sul. These records extend the known distribution range of the species in midwestern Brazil and contribute to expanding knowledge of bird species composition in this region. We believe that the absence of K. lophotes from the lists of bird species recorded in different localities in Mato Grosso do...

Notes on Vampyressa thyone (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae): distribution, genetics and hypopigmentation Biota Neotropica
Hernández-Canchola,Giovani; Gómez-Jiménez,Yire A.; Hernández-Chávez,Iván; Lucero-Verdugo,Sara Carolina; León-Paniagua,Livia.
Abstract: The frugivorous bats of the genus Vampyressa include five neotropical species, and some of them are considered relatively rare and uncommonly encountered. The northernmost distribution of this genus is in Mexico where only one species, the monotypic Vampyressa thyone, is found. Here, we report the Northwesternmost record for this species, extending its distribution range to the state of Guerrero, Mexico. This record extends the limit of the species distribution by more than 153 km. We also compared this specimens with other V. thyone, and using mitochondrial cytochrome-b sequences we detected three geographic clades within the species. The new Mexican specimen represent the most divergent cytochrome-b sequence within V. thyone. We recommend a...

Nogueira,Marcelo Rodrigues; Pol,André; Pessôa,Leila Maria; Oliveira,João Alves de; Peracchi,Adriano Lúcio.
We report the results of small mammals inventories conducted in the region of Jaíba, northern Minas Gerais state, southeastern Brazil, from 1990 to 1995. This region is located in the southern limit of the Caatinga biome, and harbors a unique set of natural ecosystems and extensive agricultural areas. With a total effort of 2964 trap-nights and 44 net sessions, we captured 893 small mammals from 46 species, including four marsupials, 13 rodents, and 29 bats. We report on species that are endemic to the Caatinga (Wiedomys pyrrhorhinos and Xeronycteris vieirai), and species that are new to the mammal fauna of the state of Minas Gerais (Tonatia saurophila, X. vieirai, and Myotis lavali). We also provide the first valid voucher-supported record of...

First record of Pagellus bellottii (Teleostei: Sparidae) in the Bay of Biscay, France ArchiMer
Iglésias, Samuel P.; Lorance, Pascal.
The red pandora, Pagellus bellottii Steindachner, 1882, is a tropical and subtropical demersal Sparidae (Porgies) that lives over hard or sandy bottoms in coastal marine waters. It mostly occurs at depths ranging from 10 to 50 metres. It is distributed in the eastern Atlantic, from the Strait of Gibraltar to Angola and the Canary Islands where it is occasionally recorded (Bauchot and Hureau, 1986; Franqueville, 1983). The species is also recorded in the southwestern Mediterranean, in the Alboran Sea, off the Algerian coasts and in the Gulf of Gabes (Oral, 2010). The records of the species in the eastern Mediterranean, Syrian and Israeli waters (Fricke, et al. 2014, Fig. 1) is questioned. We consider these records are misidentification of Pagrus pagrus...

Myotis levis (Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire) indeed occurs in Paraguay Mastozool. neotrop.
Stevens,Richard D.; López-González,Celia; McCulloch,Eve S.; Netto,Flavia.
Because of taxonomic difficulty with southern South American Myotis, the systematic status and distribution of M. levis remains unresolved. At the center of discussion is whether M. levis occurs in Paraguay. We report the occurrence of M. levis in Paraguay and substantiate our findings with comparative phenotypic and morphometric data for southern South American Myotis. This record closes a geographic gap for this species, whose distribution now includes parts of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

New records of Glironia venusta, Thomas, 1912 (Mammalia, Didelphidae), from the Amazon and Paraguay basins, Brazil Mastozool. neotrop.
Santos-Filho,M.; da Silva,M.N.F.; Costa,B.A.; Bantel,C.G.; Vieira,C.L.G.; Silva,D.J.; Franco,A.M.R..
Glironia venusta is a rare and poorly known species of tropical South America. There are few records and museum specimens. Likewise, little is known about its ecology and distribution. For Brazil, previous records had been noted in the states of Amazonas, Rondônia and Pará, all within the Amazon basin. We report the capture of a young female in Rondônia and an adult male in southwest Mato Grosso state, both in Tomahawk-type traps on lianas ~1.5m above the ground. Specimens were deposited at the mammals collection of Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA), Manaus, with collection numbers 4577 and 5237. The latter specimen is the first ever recorded of this species in Mato Grosso and in the Paraguay River basin, and represents a distribution...

Ecologically significant range extension for the chilean tree mouse, Irenomys tarsalis Mastozool. neotrop.
Kelt,Douglas A.; Engilis Jr.,Andrew; Torres,Irene E.; Hitch,Alan T..
We document a capture of the Chilean tree mouse (Irenomys tarsalis) from ecologically anomalous habitat near Pto. Ibáñez, Chile, near the xeric end of the transition from temperate rainforest to steppe. Typical of Nothofagus forest, a single reproductively active male specimen was captured in a shrubby riparian corridor ca. 40 km S and 900 m lower in elevation than the nearest forested region. This record underscores our limited understanding of this fauna, and calls for further surveys and monitoring in key habitats in this region.

Comments on the type specimen of Dracaena guianensis Daudin, 1801 (Reptilia: Sauria: Teiidae), and rediscovery of the species in French Guiana Naturalis
Massary, J.-C. de; Hoogmoed, M.S.; Blanc, M..
A discussion on the whereabouts of the holotype of Dracaena guianensis is given, and its rediscovery in the National Museum of Natural History, Leiden, The Netherlands (RMNH) and the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, Anatomie Comparée, Paris, France (MNHN-AC) is reported. The RMNH possesses a stuffed specimen, of which the left forelimb has been amputated in life and of which the skull is no longer present in the specimen. The Paris museum possesses a skull that fits the Leiden specimen. Thus, the stuffed specimen and the skull together form the complete holotype, each object can be considered a “schizotype” of the holotype. After one of us observed the species again in French Guiana and documented this with a picture, the correction of the type...

Nectarinella manauara, new species and record of the genus from Brazilian Amazonia (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Polistinae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Silveira,Orlando Tobias; Santos-Junior,José Nazareno Araujo dos.
ABSTRACT Nectarinella manaura sp. nov. is described, representing the first record of the genus from Brazilian Amazonia. Its description raises richness for Nectarinella from two to three species, and extends the range of characteristics for the genus, especially in terms of body size and color patterns. Discovery of the new species may shed new light into the knowledge of phylogenetic relationships between Nectarinella and other closely related genera.

Noteworthy bird records at Lagoa Santa, southeastern Brazil Zoologia
Rodrigues,Marcos.
Lagoa Santa, a small town in southeastern Brazil where naturalist Peter Lund lived, is regarded nowadays as an important historical site for the biological sciences. From 1847 to 1855, J.T. Reinhardt, hosted by Lund, collected 343 bird species. This material is an outstanding reference for many modern ornithological studies. The present paper reports the occurrence of some rare and threatened birds for the region of Lagoa Santa between 1998 and 2005. In this account I list the Rusty-margined Guan Penelope superciliaris Temminck, 1815; the Roseate Spoonbill Platalea ajaja Linnaeus, 1758; the Maguari Stork Ciconia maguari (Gmelin, 1789); the Wood Stork Mycteria americana Linnaeus, 1758; the Black Hawk-eagle Spizaetus tyrannus (Wied, 1820) and the...
