Commonness and Rarity: Theory and Application of a New Model to Mediterranean Montane Grasslands Ecology and Society

We examined patterns of commonness and rarity among plant species in montane wet grasslands of Iberia. This examination is set within two contexts. First, we expanded on an earlier scheme for classifying species as common or rare by adding a fourth criterion, the ability of that species to occupy a larger or smaller fraction of its potential suitable habitats, i.e., habitat occupancy. Second, we explicated two theories, the superior organism theory and the generalist/specialist trade-off theory. The data consisted of 232 species distributed among 92 plots. Study and rehabilitation of some endemic Argentinian taxa in the genus Viola L. (Violaceae), and lectotypification of a Peruvian species Gayana Botánica

Taxa of Viola sect. Andinium are detailed. W. Becker described new violas collected by H.F. Comber in 1925-1926. Sixty years later R.A. Rossow treated them in Flora Patagonica. His views have subsequently been followed in Argentina and influence taxonomic decisions taken there. Three of Comber's species not included or accepted by Rossow are rehabilitated. V. comberi, synonymised by him, differs critically from all related taxa in its unique set of characters. He placed V. cotyledon subsp. lologensis in synonymy under V. dasyphylla. As it combines equally defining features of that species and V. cotyledon, it is elevated to full species rank here. The vast extent of the Amazon Basin has historically restricted the study of its tree communities to the local and regional scales. Here, we provide empirical data on the commonness, rarity, and richness of lowland tree species across the entire Amazon Basin and Guiana Shield (Amazonia), collected in 1170 tree plots in all major forest types. Extrapolations suggest that Amazonia harbors roughly 16,000 tree species, of which just 227 (1.4%) account for half of all trees. Most of these are habitat specialists and only dominant in one or two regions of the basin. We discuss some implications of the finding that a small group of species—less diverse than the North American tree flora—accounts for half of the world’s most diverse tree community.

Distribution and conservation of Aniba Aubl. (Lauraceae Jussieu) species in Brazil Biota Neotropica

Abstract: This study conducts a biogeographical review of Aniba in Brazil, including its actual and potential distribution, and a review on the species conservation status. The potential distribution of each Aniba species was modeled using the Brazilian Plants and Fungi Biogeography system, which is interconnected with the SpeciesLink network. A consensus model based on up to five algorithms was used to model the potential distribution of each species. The endemism, conservation status and rarity of each species in Brazil were also analyzed. A total of 3059 records of 30 Brazilian Aniba species were found. Spatial and temporal distribution of stream macroalgae in a tropical river basin Biota Neotropica

Spatial and temporal distribution of stream macroalgae in streams from southeastern Brazil were assessed for one year. The fluctuations in macroalgal species composition and environmental factors were monitored monthly. The region exhibit a tropical climate, with defined rainy and dry seasons. Nineteen species were found, with a predominance of Chlorophyta (52.7% of the species), followed by Cyanobacteria (26.3%), Ochrophyta and Rhodophyta (10.5% each). Scytonema arcangeli had the highest number of records (63.6%), while Mougeotia capucina occurred in all sampling sites.
