| Since flat subduction of the Nazca Plate beneath Peru was first recognized in the 1970s and 1980s a satisfactory explanation has eluded researchers. We present evidence that a lost oceanic plateau (Inca Plateau) has subducted beneath northern Peru and propose that the combined buoyancy of Inca Plateau and Nazca Ridge in southern Peru supports a 1500 km long segment of the downgoing slab and shuts off arc volcanism. This conclusion is based on an analysis of the seismicity of the subducting Nazca Plate, the structure and geochemistry of the Marquesas Plateau as well as tectonic reconstructions of the Pacific¿Farallon spreading center 34 to 43 Ma. | Over the past decade, records of the seawater neodymium isotopic composition (epsilon(Nd)) have become a widely used proxy to reconstruct changes in ocean circulation. Our study investigates the transient response of epsilon(Nd) to large-scale ocean circulation changes using an Earth system model of intermediate complexity. It is shown that a weakening of the North Atlantic Deep Water formation results in positive epsilon(Nd) anomalies in the Atlantic and the Pacific below 1000m water depth whereas variations in Antarctic Bottom Water production generate a Pacific-Atlantic dipole pattern of deep ocean epsilon(Nd) changes. | The purpose of the study is to evaluate neurovascular anatomy of the deltoid flap based on the posterior subcutaneous deltoid artery (PSDA). Bilateral axillary artery dissections of the thirty-four shoulders of 17 formalin-fixed cadavers were performed (15 male, 2 female; age range 40 to 82 years) under the 4x loupe magnification. During the dissection of each region, the PSDA was evaluated with respect to the origin, the branches, course and anatomical relations with neighbouring structures. The PSDA was present in all cases. The PSDA was single in 26 (76.5%) cases, double in 2 (5.9%) cases and had early bifurcation in 6 (17.6%) cases. | Balsaminaceae are a morphologically diverse family with ca. 1,000 representatives that are mainly distributed in the Old World tropics and subtropics. To understand the relationships of its members, we obtained chloroplast atpB-rbcL sequences from 86 species of Balsaminaceae and five outgroups. Phylogenetic reconstructions using parsimony and Bayesian approaches provide a well-resolved phylogeny in which the sister group relationship between Impatiens and Hydrocera is confirmed.
