The "lost Inca Plateau": cause of flat subduction beneath Peru? ArchiMer
Gutscher, Marc-andre; Olivet, Jean-louis; Aslanian, Daniel; Eissen, Jp; Maury, Rene.
Since flat subduction of the Nazca Plate beneath Peru was first recognized in the 1970s and 1980s a satisfactory explanation has eluded researchers. We present evidence that a lost oceanic plateau (Inca Plateau) has subducted beneath northern Peru and propose that the combined buoyancy of Inca Plateau and Nazca Ridge in southern Peru supports a 1500 km long segment of the downgoing slab and shuts off arc volcanism. This conclusion is based on an analysis of the seismicity of the subducting Nazca Plate, the structure and geochemistry of the Marquesas Plateau as well as tectonic reconstructions of the Pacific¿Farallon spreading center 34 to 43 Ma. These restore three sub¿parallel Pacific oceanic plateaus; the Austral, Tuamotu and Marquesas, to two Farallon...

Ocean circulation reconstructions from epsilon(Nd): A model-based feasibility study ArchiMer
Friedrich, T.; Timmermann, A.; Stichel, T.; Pahnke, K..
Over the past decade, records of the seawater neodymium isotopic composition (epsilon(Nd)) have become a widely used proxy to reconstruct changes in ocean circulation. Our study investigates the transient response of epsilon(Nd) to large-scale ocean circulation changes using an Earth system model of intermediate complexity. It is shown that a weakening of the North Atlantic Deep Water formation results in positive epsilon(Nd) anomalies in the Atlantic and the Pacific below 1000m water depth whereas variations in Antarctic Bottom Water production generate a Pacific-Atlantic dipole pattern of deep ocean epsilon(Nd) changes. Further experiments explore which ocean regions are suitable to record the temporal evolution of the overturning in the North Atlantic...

Anthropometric Landmarks for Posterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction in Anatomical Position International Journal of Morphology
Compeán-Martínez,Gustavo Adolfo; Morales-Avalos,Rodolfo; Vílchez-Cavazos,Félix; Acosta-Olivo,Carlos; Mendoza-Lemus,Oscar Fernando; de la Garza-Castro,Oscar; Elizondo-Omaña,Rodrigo E; Guzmán-López,Santos.
To determine viable anatomical landmarks allowing for accurate femoral and tibial tunnel placement in anatomical position during posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) reconstruction. Ten knees were dissected to analyze femoral and tibial PCL insertion measurements and the features specific to the PCL and its fascicles. The clock hands system was used to measure femoral insertions. The meniscus and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) were used as landmarks to measure tibial insertions. The PCL and its corresponding fascicle characteristics were determined by its femoral insertion, central portion and tibial insertion. The mean lengths between the central point of the PCL footprint and the articular cartilage border at 12:00 h were 17.23 mm (±3.94) and 17.73 mm...

Anatomy of Deltoid Flap Based on Posterior Subcutaneous Deltoid Artery: A Cadaveric Investigation International Journal of Morphology
Edizer,M; Tayfur,V; Magden,A. O; Atabey,A; Gocmen-Mas,N; Aksu,F; Karabekir,S.
The purpose of the study is to evaluate neurovascular anatomy of the deltoid flap based on the posterior subcutaneous deltoid artery (PSDA). Bilateral axillary artery dissections of the thirty-four shoulders of 17 formalin-fixed cadavers were performed (15 male, 2 female; age range 40 to 82 years) under the 4x loupe magnification. During the dissection of each region, the PSDA was evaluated with respect to the origin, the branches, course and anatomical relations with neighbouring structures. The PSDA was present in all cases. The PSDA was single in 26 (76.5%) cases, double in 2 (5.9%) cases and had early bifurcation in 6 (17.6%) cases. The mean length of the lateral cutaneous brachial nerve was 6.0 mm range from 49.0 mm to 83.9 mm. The mean distance...

Phylogenetics of Impatiens and Hydrocera (Balsaminaceae) using chloroplast atpB-rbcL spacer sequences Naturalis
Janssens, S.; Geuten, K.; Yuan, Y.; Song, Y.; Küpfer, P.; Smets, E..
Balsaminaceae are a morphologically diverse family with ca. 1,000 representatives that are mainly distributed in the Old World tropics and subtropics. To understand the relationships of its members, we obtained chloroplast atpB-rbcL sequences from 86 species of Balsaminaceae and five outgroups. Phylogenetic reconstructions using parsimony and Bayesian approaches provide a well-resolved phylogeny in which the sister group relationship between Impatiens and Hydrocera is confirmed. The overall topology of Impatiens is strongly supported and is geographically structured. Impatiens likely originated in South China from which it colonized the adjacent regions and afterwards dispersed into North America, Africa, India, the Southeast Asian peninsula, and the...
