| In Obihiro City, the number of red squirrel, Sciurus vulgaris o ientis, death due to traffic accidents was large. Therefore, a number of measures have been taken to prevent these numerous traffic accidents. The “Red Squirrel Traffic Accident Map” was prepared based on data collected by citizen group and our laboratory of Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine. Based on this map, warning sign posts indicating “Squirrel Crossing” were installed in 18 locations within the city. | 帯広畜産大学構内において2009年４月下旬から８月にかけて，エゾリスSciurus vulgaris orientis の巣と営巣木の選択に関して調査した．計43個のエゾリスの巣が発見され，その内訳は 球状巣14巣，皿状巣26巣およびその他３巣であった．本種は球状巣および皿状巣の営巣木において， 樹高が高く，胸高直径の大きい針葉樹を選択した．営巣木を中心とした半径11.28ｍのプロット 内における，立木密度と胸高断面積の合計は，いずれも球状巣の周辺において皿状巣の周辺より も値が大きかった．エゾリスの営巣木を保全するためには，営巣木だけでなく，その周辺の環境 にも注意する必要があるだろう．We performed an investigation on red squirrels’ nests and selection of nest trees from late April to August 2009 on the campus of Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine. Forty-three nests were found, of which 14 were dreys, 26 were nests, and 3 were not classifiable. For their dreys and nests, red squirrels chose high conifer trees with large DBH.
