Revalidation of Saccocoelioides bacilliformis (Digenea, Haploporidae) parasitizing species of Astyanax (Characiformes, Characidae) from southern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Gallas,Moisés; Utz,Laura R. P..
ABSTRACT In Argentina, Saccocoelioides bacilliformis Szidat, 1973 was described from specimens collected probably in Astyanax bimaculatus (Linnaeus, 1758), but latter it was synonymyzed with Saccocoelioides octavus Szidat, 1970. During the examination of digenetic trematodes collected in different species of Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854 from southern Brazil, we found specimens identified as Saccocoelioides. A detailed comparison of the morphology of the two species revealed that they should be considered valid, thus this study proposes the revalidation of S. bacilliformis. The traits that allowed the revalidation were: body shape, position of the caecal bifurcation, and the extension of the uterus and vitellarium. Parameters of infections are provided...

The rediscovery of Stenogeocoris horvathi Montandon (Heteroptera, Geocoridae) in Argentina Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Dellapé,Pablo M.; Dellapé,Gimena; Martínez,Fernando.
ABSTRACT Stenogeocoris Montandon, 1913 was described to include S. horvathi based in one specimen from Córdoba Province, Argentina. The type specimen is lost and there are no records or additional material since the Montandon's description; thus, the identity of this taxon has remained uncertain until now. In this contribution, we redescribe the genus Stenogeocoris and the species S. horvathi, based on male and female specimens, including characters from the male genitalia, and compare Stenogeocoris with the other Neotropical genera

Review of the hydrothermal vent shrimp genus Mirocaris, redescription of M-fortunata and reassessment of the taxonomic status of the family Alvinocarididae (Crustacea : Decapoda : Caridea) ArchiMer
Komai, T; Segonzac, Michel.
The hydrothermal vent shrimp genus Mirocaris is reviewed. Morphological comparison between the two nominal species in the genus, M. fortunata and M. keldyshi, was made based on the re-examination of the holotype and paratypes of Mirocarisfortunata and the paratypes of M. keldyshi. Samples newly collected from various sites on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge were also examined. The validity of the genus Mirocaris has been confirmed. However, our study has revealed that the supposed morphological characters distinguishing M. fortunata and M. keldyshi do not provide significant taxonomic differences and further comparison failed to detect morphological differences between the two taxa. Thus M. keldyshi is synonymized with M. fortunata, and so there is only one single...

Taxonomic Re-Investigation and Geochemical Characterization of Reid’s (1974) Species of Spiniferites from Holotype and Topotype Material ArchiMer
Gurdebeke, Pieter R.; Mertens, Kenneth; Bogus, Kara; Marret, Fabienne; Chomerat, Nicolas; Vrielinck, Henk; Louwye, Stephen.
The genus Spiniferites currently encompasses 142 dinoflagellate cyst species. Some Spiniferites species are difficult to identify because of an incomplete or doubtful description, and/or substandard iconography. This study re-describes and re-illustrates the Spiniferites holotypes first described by Reid in 1974 Reid PC. 1974. Gonyaulacacean dinoflagellate cysts from the British Isles. Nova Hedwigia. 25:579–637. [Google Scholar]. It also discusses topotype material from surface sediments recovered from British estuaries, and attempts to provide further constraints on the classification of species in this genus using the geochemical characterization of their cyst walls. Reid described four new Spiniferites species: Spiniferites belerius, Spiniferites...

Cymothoa frontalis, a cymothoid isopod parasitizing the belonid fish Strongylura strongylura from the Malabar Coast (Kerala, India): redescription, description, prevalence and life cycle ArchiMer
Thamban, Aneesh Panakkool; Kappalli, Sudha; Kottarathil, Helna Ameri; Gopinathan, Anilkumar; Paul, Trilles Jean.
Background: Cymothoa frontalis Milne Edward, 1840 is a very poorly described cymothoid, notwithstanding the previous redescription of the female. Pertinently, to date, the host of C. frontalis has not been identified with adequate precision. Most of the descriptions of cymothoids carried out hitherto were based primarily on females, but practically ignoring other life cycle stages. The present paper redescribes the female and describes other life cycle stages of the species C. frontalis to get better precision in their identification. Results: The female phase of C. frontalis is redescribed according to type specimens extant in the NMNH, Paris, and also by the data obtained from live specimens collected during the present study. The general morphology and...

Polynemus kapuasensis, a new threadfin (Perciformes: Polynemidae) from western Kalimantan, Indonesia, and a redescription of P. multifilis Temminck & Schlegel, 1843 Naturalis
Motomura, H.; Oijen, M.J.P. van.
Polynemus multifilis Temminck & Schlegel, 1843, is redescribed and its synonymy, authorship, type material status and distribution are discussed. In addition, a new species, P. kapuasensis, previously identified as P. multifilis, is described from the Kapuas River, western Kalimantan, Indonesia on the basis of 12 specimens. Polynemus kapuasensis differs from P. multifilis in having higher counts of pectoral filaments (usually 15 on each side of body vs. 14 in the latter), pored lateral line scales [mode 103 (range 100-110) vs. 86 (83- 99)], scale rows above lateral line [10 (9-11) vs. 8 (7 or 8)] and caudal peduncle scales [38 (35-40) vs. 32 (28- 37)], and a shorter pectoral fin [mean 31% (range 29-33%) of standard length], its posterior tip not...

On the biogeographic range of the genus Teleopsis Rondani (Diptera: Diopsidae), with redescription of Teleopsis sykesii from India and description of a new species from Borneo Naturalis
Feijen, H.R.; Feijen, C..
The genotype of the genus Teleopsis Rondani, T. sykesii (Westwood) from India is redescribed: Teleopsis onopyxus Séguy is now considered a junior synonym of T. sykesii. T. onopyxus was described from Madagascar, but this type locality must be due to mislabelling. T. sykesii occurs in India and perhaps in Myanmar. Lectotypes are designated for T. sykesii and T. onopyxus. From Sarawak and Sabah, Teleopsis pallifacies spec. nov. is described. Among its type series of more than 200 specimens, single flies occurred with labels from Australia and Irian Jaya. These are also considered to be mislabelled. Teleopsis now becomes a purely Oriental genus with no representatives in the Australasian or Malagasy regions. For T. sykesii and T. pallifacies spec. nov., data...

Redescription of Gobius cauerensis (Bleeker, 1853), with discussion of the validity of the species Naturalis
Randall, J.E.; Greenfield, D.W..
Thacker (2004b) regarded the gobiid fish Gnatholepis cauerensis (Bleeker) as a synonym of Gnatholepis anjerensis (Bleeker) and treated G. scapulostigma Herre as the replacement name for what other recent authors had identified as G. cauerensis. The holotype of Gobius cauerensis Bleeker from the Nationaal Natuurhistorische Museum in Leiden is redescribed. Because its colour pattern has faded, the original Bleeker painting is reproduced, the diagnostic colour features noted, and comparison provided with an underwater photograph taken of a specimen before it was collected in the Mentawai Islands (near the type locality of Kauer, Sumatra). Gnatholepis cauerensis is a valid species distinct from G. anjerensis. G. scapulostigma Herre is returned to the synonymy...

Morphology, Ecology and Biogeography of the South American Caecilian Chthonerpeton Indistinctum (Amphibia: Gymnophiona: Typhlonectidae) Naturalis
Gudynas, E.; Williams, J.D.; Mercedes Azpelicueta, M. de las.
This study of Chthonerpeton indistinctum (Reinhardt & Lütken, 1861) considers 25 morphometric characters, teeth-counts and sex, based on 96 specimens. A multivariate analysis of characters and comparisons of geographically arranged samples is carried out by graphic and statistical methods. No trends in geographical variation were found. Subsequently a redescription of the species is presented, including measurements and counts. Sexual dimorphism was observed for four characters related to the cloacal region. The results are discussed and compared with previous reports. Character-variation is also studied. Primary annuli counts show very low variation; sample variation profiles were similar for the remaining characters. A revision of biological data...
