Anticipatory Learning for Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience Ecology and Society
Tschakert, Petra; Department of Geography; Earth and Environmental Systems Institute (EESI), Pennsylvania State University; petra@psu.edu; Dietrich, Kathleen Ann; Department of Geography, Pennsylvania State University; kad984@psu.edu.
This paper is a methodological contribution to emerging debates on the role of learning, particularly forward-looking (anticipatory) learning, as a key element for adaptation and resilience in the context of climate change. First, we describe two major challenges: understanding adaptation as a process and recognizing the inadequacy of existing learning tools, with a specific focus on high poverty contexts and complex livelihood-vulnerability risks. Then, the article examines learning processes from a dynamic systems perspective, comparing theoretical aspects and conceptual advances in resilience thinking and action research/learning (AR/AL). Particular attention is paid to learning loops (cycles), critical reflection, spaces for learning, and power....

Reflection on the development process of a sustainability assessment tool: learning from a Flemish case Ecology and Society

Adoption of sustainability assessment tools in agricultural practice is often disappointing. One of the critical success factors for adoption is the tool development process. Because scientific attention to these development processes and insights about them are rather limited, we aimed to foster the scientific debate on this topic. This was done by reflecting on the development process of a Flemish sustainability assessment tool, MOTIFS. MOTIFS was developed with the aim of becoming widely adopted by farmers and farm advisors, but this result was not achieved. Our reflection process showed success factors favoring and barriers hindering tool adoption. These were grouped into three clusters of lessons learned for sound tool development: (1) institutional...

Understanding adaptation and transformation through indigenous practice: the case of the Guna of Panama Ecology and Society
Apgar, Marina J; Policy, Economic and Social Sciences, WorldFish Center; m.apgar@cgxchange.org; Allen, Will; Learning for Sustainability; willallennz@gmail.com; Moore, Kevin; Faculty of Environment, Society and Design, Lincoln University; kevin.moore@lincoln.ac.nz; Ataria, James; Te Matapuna, Kaupapa Maori Unit, Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Lincoln University; jamie.ataria@gmail.com.
Resilience is emerging as a promising vehicle for improving management of social-ecological systems that can potentially lead to more sustainable arrangements between environmental and social spheres. Central to an understanding of how to support resilience is the need to understand social change and its links with adaptation and transformation. Our aim is to contribute to insights about and understanding of underlying social dynamics at play in social-ecological systems. We argue that longstanding indigenous practices provide opportunities for investigating processes of adaptation and transformation. We use in-depth analysis of adaptation and transformation through engagement in participatory action research, focusing on the role of cultural and social...

Etude expérimentale pour l'optimisation des performances d'une plage d'amortissement parabolique ArchiMer
Le Boulluec, Marc; Kimmoun, Olivier; Molin, Bernard.
An optimisation study was run before rebuilding the damping beach of the Ifremer Ocean Engineering Basin. Trials were conducted at a ¼ geometrical scale at Ecole Centrale de Marseille in a wave tank reproducing the original performance of the beach. A series of modifications was studied : incidence, device between the beach and the adjacent wall, porosity. Porosity was shown as the most efficient tool to enhance the beach absorption and full scale measurements revealed that the resulting damping coefficient was less than 10 % for all usual periods and amplitudes.

Infragravity waves: from driving mechanisms to impacts ArchiMer

Infragravity (hereafter IG) waves are surface ocean waves with frequencies below those of wind-generated "short waves" (typically be- low 0.04 Hz). Here we focus on the most common type of IG waves, those induced by the presence of groups in incident short waves. Three related mechanisms explain their generation: (1) the development, shoaling and release of waves bound to the short-wave group envelopes (2) the modulation by these envelopes of the location where short waves break, and (3) the merging of bores (breaking wave front, resembling to a hydraulic jump) inside the surfzone. When reaching shallow water (O(1-10 m)), IG waves can transfer part of their energy back to higher frequencies, a process which is highly dependent on beach slope. On gently...

REFLEXIONES ANTROPOLÓGICAS EN TORNO A LOS SISTEMAS AGROALIMENTARIOS LOCALES: LA PROBLEMÁTICA DEL DESARROLLO ENDÓGENO EN LAS COSTAS AUSTRALES CHILENAS AgEcon
Saavedra Gallo, Gonzalo; Macias Vazquez, Alfredo.
Our purpose in the present work is to make a methodological contribution to enrich the SYAL concept from two points of view. Firstly, as a critical reconsideration of the theory of territorial development, and more specifically SYAL development, taking into account the fact that the local institutional framework is the result of the complex - even conflictive - interaction of economic rationales based on diverse cultural logics. Secondly, as an analysis of the strategies promoted by this type of development, identifying the endogenous components which strengthen and reinforce in local actors the ability to reflectively structure and re-structure system relationships at the territorial level. The empirical-ethnographic support for these reflections is drawn...
