Infoteca-e

Use of rotavirus virus-like particles as surrogates to evaluate virus persistence in shellfish ArchiMer
Loisy, Fabienne; Atmar, R; Le Saux, Jean-claude; Cohen, J; Caprais, Marie-paule; Pommepuy, Monique; Le Guyader, Soizick.
Rotavirus virus-like particles (VLPs) and MS2 bacteriophages were bioaccumulated in bivalve mollusks to evaluate viral persistence in shellfish during depuration and relaying under natural conditions. Using this nonpathogenic surrogate virus, we were able to demonstrate that about 1 log(10) of VLPs was depurated after 1 week in warm seawater (22 degrees C). Phage MS2 was depurated more rapidly (about 2 log(10) in 1 week) than were VLPs, as determined using a single-compartment model and linear regression analysis. After being relayed in the estuary under the influence of the tides, VLPs were detected in oysters for up to 82 days following seeding with high levels of VLPs (concentration range between 10(10) and 10(9) particles per g of pancreatic tissue)...

Prediction of Stature According to Three Head Measurements International Journal of Morphology
Rexhepi,Agron M; Brestovci,Behlul.
Morphometry is a non-invasive method important to assess the size, proportions, and composition of the human body. Because the prediction is an important subject in almost all life sciences, the aim of this research was to find out the cephalofacial variables that may predict the body height. Three cephalofacial variables and the body height were measured on 288 adult male subjects of the Kosovo Albanian population, aged 1835 years old. Using the procedures of regressive analysis we found that cephalofacial variables: head height, head circumferences, face height, significantly may predict body height, and in this way we derived the specific regression equation for estimation of the body height, based on these cephalofacial variables. The predicted body...

Cranial Capacity in an Adult Sri Lankan Population: Sexual Dimorphism and Ethnic Diversity International Journal of Morphology
Ilayperuma,I.
Cranial capacity exerts a close correlation with the volume of the brain. A large body of evidence shows a clear racial variation in cranial dimensions. Therefore detailed knowledge of the population specific data on biometric features of the cranial cavity is important in the study and comparison of the crania of populations from different racial backgrounds, assessing growth and development of an individual and in the diagnosis of any abnormalities of cranial size and shape. Despite its significance, little is known concerning the cranial capacity in Sri Lankans. Hence, the present study was undertaken to establish the cranial capacity in an adult Sri Lankan population. A total of 210 subjects with an age span of 20-23 years were included in the study....

On the Prediction of Personal Stature from Cranial Dimensions International Journal of Morphology
Ilayperuma,Isurani.
Dimensional relationship between body segments and stature has been the focus of scientists for many years. All such studies were based on the fact that body segments exhibit consistent ratios relative to the stature and these ratios are linked to age, gender and race. Racial characters are best defined in the skull. Therefore, prediction of stature from cranial remains is vital in establishing the identity of an unknown individual. Despite its significance, little is known concerning the cranial dimensions in Sri Lankans. Hence, this study was designed to investigate the relationship and to propose a gender and age specific linear regression model between the cranial dimensions and height of an individual. A total of 400 subjects with an age span of 20-23...

Screening for ketosis using multiple logistic regression based on milk yield and composition OAK
KAYANO, Mitsunori; KATAOKA, Tomoko; 茅野, 光範.
Multiple logistic regression was applied to milk yield and composition data for 632 records of healthy cows and 61 records of ketotic cows in Hokkaido, Japan. The purpose was to diagnose ketosis based on milk yield and composition, simultaneously. The cows were divided into two groups: (1) multiparous, including 314 healthy cows and 45 ketotic cows and (2) primiparous, including 318 healthy cows and 16 ketotic cows, since nutritional status, milk yield and composition are affected by parity. Multiple logistic regression was applied to these groups separately. For multiparous cows, milk yield (kg/day/cow) and protein-to-fat (P/F) ratio in milk were significant factors (P<0.05) for the diagnosis of ketosis. For primiparous cows, lactose content (%), solid...

Reconstrucción de la distribución de tallas de abadejo (Genypterus blacodes) a partir de una distribución de longitudes de cabeza. OceanDocs
Villarino, M.F.; Aubone, A..
The total length distribution of pink cuskeel Genypterus blacodes catches is difficult to obtain. On the contrary, it is easy to have access to the head length distribution. So, the purpose of this study was to obtain a relationship between a certain head measurement and total length to estimate the length distribution of the catches. Individuals were obtained from bottom-trawl surveys between 39°-47°S and the San Jorge Gulf of the Argentine sea. Sets of measurements of total length (LT), maxillar length (Lmax), head length (Lc),orbital length (Lo), preorbital length (Lpo) and head length-total length ratio (r=Lc/LT) by sex were obtained. The total length was estimated with a regression model using the head length as independent variable. No significant...

The abundance, biomass and composition of pelagic ciliates in East African lakes of different salinity and trophy OceanDocs
Yasindi, A. W.; Taylor, W. D..
Planktonic ciliates were studied in 17 tropical East African lakes of different salinity and trophic status. Oligotrichs (e.g., Strombidium, Strobilidium and Halteria) and scuticociliates (e.g., Cyclidium, Pleuronema, Cristigera), dominated the ciliate communities. Conductivity and trophic status were the most important environmental variables influencing the distribution of ciliate species in East African lakes. Herbivorous oligotrichs were important in oligotrophic and mesotrophic lakes, as they are in temperate and subtropical lakes, but their importance decreased with increasing chlorophyll a concentration and conductivity. On the other hand, the importance of scuticociliates (primarily bacterivores) increased with increasing chlorophyll a and...

Recent Changes in Milk Marketing in the UK: The Farmers' Perspective AgEcon
Franks, J.R..
In 1994 Milk Marketing Boards in the UK were disbanded, their role as milk purchasers was taken by more than 100 licensed organisations. It is shown that this change resulted in an increase in the variation between producers' milk price. The majority of dairy farmers sold milk through the Milk Marketing Boards designated successor; a farmer owned co-operative called Milk Marque. In doing so they accepted a 1.5 ppl milk price penalty. It is shown farmers who adopted this strategy did so because of the perceived financial security of Milk Marque, goodwill and support for the principle of co-operative marketing and in an attempt to protect the milk price over the longer-term. The marketing environment changed once again in 2000 when Milk Marque was disbanded....

Determinants of Trust between Buyers and Suppliers in Agribusiness: Empirical Evidence from the German Pork Sector AgEcon
Schulze, Birgit; Spiller, Achim.
There are several hints that there is lack of trust in the relationships between farmers and processors in the meat industry. To generate instruments of trust management, a survey is conducted in the German pork chain measuring the level of trust perceived by farmers as well as the antecedents of trust. Overall satisfaction, the perceived neutrality of the carcass grading system, fairness and farmer orientation are the most import factors explaining trust.

WER GEHT NOCH AN DIE THEKE? ERGEBNISSE EINER VERBRAUCHERSTUDIE ZU SB-FLEISCH AgEcon
Schulze, Birgit; Spiller, Achim.
The German meat market is facing considerable changes. Along with the boom of case-ready and discount stores, butchers and smaller retailers loose market shares, and private labels become widely accepted. The consumers' preferences are often neglected by these trends. This contribution discusses the German case-ready trend on the basis of an extensive literature review and a consumer survey. A target group of high-income consumers with high preference for meat counters is identified. Consumers who currently buy case-ready meat are acting rather due to price advantages than for reasons of technical advantages such as longer storage life. International examples show that in such a situation it is up to the retailers, if meat counters can survive. Der...

Perspectives of small retailers in the organic market: Customer satisfaction and customer enthusiasm AgEcon
Bolten, Jan; Kennerknecht, Raphael; Spiller, Achim.
In this paper we discuss the impact of customer satisfaction and enthusiasm on the performance of small retailers in the organic food market. The analysis of customer satisfaction and shop data confirm essential economic effects. The study is based on 948 customer interviews and an analysis of management ratios of 12 organic food shops in Germany. The results show that customer satisfaction is a relevant key to sales performance. Regression analysis reveals that overall customer satisfaction accounts for 32 % of sales per square meter sales area. An additional factor analysis identifies service and product quality as main determinant s of customer satisfaction. Consumer s consider the freshness of fruit and vegetables as representative for the quality of...

Adjusting prices for volume: a test of the Hotelling valuation principle AgEcon
Berck, Peter.
This paper tests the hypothesis that the net of extraction cost price of a natural resource does not change with volume. The hypothesis is shown to he a consequence of Hotelling’s theory. The tests are performed on equations estimated by a nonparametric regression (ACE), and we show that the usual least squares estimation techniques are not general enough to successfully perform the test. The test rejects the pure form of the Hotelling theory and shows that it is necessary to adjust sale prices for volume sold.
