How to model social-ecological systems? – A case study on the effects of a future offshore wind farm on the local society and ecosystem, and whether social compensation matters ArchiMer
Haraldsson, Matilda; Raoux, Aurore; Riera, Fabien; Hay, Julien; Dambacher, Jeffrey M.; Niquil, Nathalie.
Models of social-ecological systems (SES) are acknowledged as an important tool to understand human-nature relations. However, many SES models fail to integrate adequate information from both the human and ecological subsystems. With an example model of a future Offshore Wind Farm development and its effects on both the ecosystem and local human population, we illustrate a method facilitating a “balanced” SES model, in terms of including information from both subsystems. We use qualitative mathematical modeling, which allows to quickly analyze the structure and dynamics of a system without including quantitative data, and therefore to compare alternative system structures based on different understandings of how the system works. By including similar...

The Energy Transition involves governance issues which need to be overcome to ensure its success. In Europe, the policies that accompany this energy transition have fixed very short term goals such as the diversification and the development of renewable energy sources by 2020. The benefits of developing these technologies for limiting greenhouse gases emissions is widely accepted at European and national level and is frequently invoked by the State for legitimizing the current projects. However, many projects declared of public interest by the State lead to conflicts, at the territorial level, between the objective of economic development, and those of biodiversity conservation and of social interests protection. In this context, the compensation is often...

Hydrodynamic Ocean Circulation Models and Lagrangian particle tracking models are valuable tools e.g. in coastal ecology to identify the connectivity between offshore spawning and coastal nursery areas of commercially important fish, for risk assessment and more for defining or evaluating marine protected areas. Most studies are based on only one model and do not provide levels of uncertainty. Here this uncertainty was addressed by applying a suite of 11 North Sea models to test what variability can be expected concerning connectivity. Different notional test cases were calculated related to three important and well-studied North Sea fish species: herring (Clupea harengus), and the flatfishes sole (Solea solea) and plaice (Pleuronectes platessa). For sole...

Étude expérimentale des performances d’une hydrolienne, soumise aux effets de la turbulence et de l’interaction houle-courant ArchiMer
Gaurier, Benoit.
In the context of global warming, the extraction of energy by tidal turbines from marine currents must be integrated into the future energetic mix. Being confronted with a difficult marine environment, it is required to know the turbines’ behaviour when they are submitted to realistic solicitations to guarantee an optimal use. In this work, the marine turbine performance is studied when the machine is submitted to a turbulent current or a combined wave-current effect. The physical representation of trials at reduced scale is first described focusing on the incoming flow characterisation and its effects on a turbine model at 1:20 scale. The location and measurement type of the upstream velocity are discussed to accurately define its performance and its...

Dynamic behaviour of an undulating membrane tidal energy converter under wave and current loading ArchiMer
Träsch, Martin; Delacroix, Sylvain; Déporte, Astrid; Drevet, Jean-baptiste; Gaurier, Benoit; Germain, Gregory.
The dynamic behaviour of an undulating tidal energy converter under wave and current loadings is studied. Therefore, a small scale prototype of a damped pre-stressed undulating membrane is tested in a wave and current recirculatory tank. The membrane’s dynamic profile and hydrodynamic forces are measured synchronously with the surface elevation for both regular and irregular waves in current direction. Spectrum analysis reveals that the response to wave loading depends on the wave frequency and is reduced by damping-type power take-off. Coupling between the wave frequency and the main undulation frequency or its harmonics is also observed. An increase of 30% of the forces must be foreseen in case of wave condition in the tested range.

Energy, Agriculture, and GHG Emissions: The Role of Agriculture in Alternative Energy Production and GHG Emission Reduction in North Dakota AgEcon
Aravindhakshan, Sijesh C.; Koo, Won W..
Energy, agriculture, and GHG emissions are highly interrelated. Several agricultural commodities are currently used as feedstock for biofuel production to replace fossil fuels. As the largest consumer of energy, the U.S. has taken several initiatives to reduce the use of fossil fuels, achieve energy security, and reduce GHG emissions. The industrial community of the U.S. invested heavily in biofuel and wind energy production. North Dakota has highest potential in producing wind energy and biomass from dedicated energy crops. Unfortunately these resources are not fully utilized for producing renewable energy. North Dakota is an energy intensive economy and per capita energy consumption is higher than other states. This technical bulletin provides a...

Wind Power Development: Opportunities and Challenges AgEcon
van Kooten, G. Cornelis; Timilsina, Govinda R..
In this study, the prospects of wind power at the global level are reviewed. Existing studies indicate that the earth’s wind energy supply potential significantly exceeds global energy demand. Yet, only 1% of the global electricity demand is currently derived from wind power despite 40% annual growth in wind generating capacity over the last 25 years. More than 98% of total current wind power capacity is installed in the developed countries plus China and India. Existing studies estimate that wind power could supply 7% to 34% of global electricity needs by 2050. Wind power faces a large number of technical, financial, institutional, market and other barriers. To overcome these, many countries have employed various policy instruments, including capital...

IFECO – Modelling the Agro-Fuel Chain for Energy Cogeneration AgEcon
Rosa, Franco.
Policy makers are searching for viable strategies to produce alternative energies; the agricultural sector can become an important supplier of renewable energy. The paper will develop the IFECO (integrated farm energy cogeneration) approach, a conceptual model of farm though as it were an "island economy"a a net energy exporter as the energy output exceeds the direct energy (cultivation, cropping, plant protection, transport, harvesting, storage) and indirect energy (fertilizer, pesticide, machinery, plantationforce, others) used in sunflower cultivation. IFECO is based on the cogeneration that is the production of different energies from a single agricultural commodity to achieve the three targets that make this project sustainable: i) economic...

HŐHASZNOSÍTÁSÚ BIOMASSZA POTENCIÁL HEVES MEGYÉBEN AgEcon
Gergely, Sandor.
The Economic and Policy Setting of Renewable Energy: Where Do Things Stand? AgEcon
Darmstadter, Joel.
This paper looks at the status and prospects of renewables-with particular emphasis on windpower-in the electric power sector. Although renewables account for a steadily rising share of electricity generation in various countries, their role remains small in absolute terms. In part, this is because of technological progress of and successful competition from fossil-fueled generation-notably, combined cycle gas turbines. While diminishing, subsidies continue to be indispensable to the use of renewables in most places. Viability of renewables-based electricity is undermined by the cost of externalities for which fossil energy combustion is only partially charged. A number of countries (and states in the U.S.) have launched obligatory requirements for...
