Regulation of the Bone Healing Process by Hormones International Journal of Morphology
Issa,Joáo Paulo Mardegan; Tiossi,Rodrigo; Mello,Amaro Sergio da Silva; Iyomasa,Mamie Mizusaki.
The skeleton has several important functions, such as structural functions that provide mobility, support, and protection for the body. It also has an important function as a reservoir for calcium and phosphorus. The aim of this article is to show the principal hormones that are involved with the bone healing process. In this article, it will be pointed the mineral homeostatic mechanisms in the skeleton, controlled by the calcium-regulating hormones: parathyroid hormone (PTH) that maintains the normal extracellular calcium levels by enhancing osteoclastic bone resorption and liberating calcium from the adult skeleton; estrogen, considering that both osteoblasts and osteoclasts express estrogen receptors, it is reasonable to assume that the effects of...

Costs, Emissions Reductions, and Vehicle Repair: Evidence from Arizona AgEcon
Ando, Amy Whritenour; McConnell, Virginia D.; Harrington, Winston.
The Arizona I/M program provides one of the first opportunities to examine the costs and effectiveness of vehicle emission repair. This paper examines various aspects of emission reductions, fuel economy improvements, and costs of repair, drawing data from over 80,000 vehicles failing the I/M test in Arizona between 1995 and the first half of 1996. We summarize the wealth of repair data from the Arizona program and highlight its limitations. Because missing or incomplete cost information has been a serious shortcoming for evaluation of I/M programs, we develop a method for estimating the costs of repair when those costs are not reported. We find surprising evidence that almost one quarter of all vehicles that take the I/M test are never observed to pass...

Aerobic exercise repairs neurological function after cerebral ischaemia by regulating the nitric oxide Anais da ABC (AABC)
SUN,LEI; ZHUANG,LV-PING; WU,WEI-FENG.
Abstract: To investigate the mechanism of different exercise patterns on neurological function after focal cerebral ischaemia in rats. Rats with focal cerebral cerebral ischaemia were randomly divided into an aerobic exercise group, an exhaustive exercise group and a control group, with 8 rats in each group. A score for nerve function in each group was calculated, and the ultrastructure of nerve cells was observed. Levels of NO and NOS in the brain motor area of the rats were measured in each group. The aerobic exercise group had lower nerve function scores than the exhaustive exercise group and higher scores than the control group (P<0.05). Under transmission electron microscopy, irregular shapes and organs were observed in nerve cells in the control...

Stem cells and respiratory diseases BABT
Abreu,Soraia Carvalho; Maron-Gutierrez,Tatiana; Garcia,Cristiane Sousa Nascimento Baez; Morales,Marcelo Marcos; Rocco,Patricia Rieken Macedo.
Stem cells have a multitude of clinical implications in the lung. This article is a critical review that includes clinical and experimental studies of MedLine and SciElo database in the last 10 years, where we highlight the effects of stem cell therapy in acute respiratory distress syndrome or more chronic disorders such as lung fibrosis and emphysema. Although, many studies have shown the beneficial effects of stem cells in lung development, repair and remodeling; some important questions need to be answered to better understand the mechanisms that control cell division and differentiation, therefore enabling the use of cell therapy in human respiratory diseases.
