Death-feigning behaviour in Iphisa elegans: the second reported case in the Family Gymnophthalmidae (Reptilia: Squamata) Acta Amazonica
MACHADO-FILHO,Paulo Roberto; MOYA,Guilherme Marson; MAFFEI,Fábio.
ABSTRACT Death-feigning behaviour occurs when the animal simulates a state of immobility. This behaviour is described for some lizard families, among them the family Gymnophthalmidae with only one record. Iphisa elegans is a diurnal and terrestrial Amazonian gymnophtalmid lizard. It has cryptic behavior and moves rapidly on the ground, hindering observations of its behavior. We report a case at the Comodoro Municipality, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. An adult male of I. elegans, when manipulated, turned its venter up and put itself in a death-feigning posture. This species is preyed upon by birds, snakes and other lizards¸ possibly behaving this way when the cryptic behaviour or escape attempt fails. More studies are necessary to evaluate the efficiency of...

ABSTRACT The determination of hematological values is used to obtain knowledge about the health conditions of animal species. The big-headed Amazon River turtles, (Peltocephalus dumerilianus) are considered one of the least known testudine species concerning their biology and health status. Herein, we determined the hematological and plasma biochemical parameters of17 (eight males and nine females) adult P. dumerilianus to provide reference interval values for clinically healthy individuals. We collected the blood samples by puncturing the femoral vein using long heparinized hypodermic syringes. Sexual dimorphism for individuals was determined by external observation of the shape of the plastron. The average values obtained for the ten hematological and...

Body and testicular biometric parameters of the scorpion mud turtle (Kinosternon scorpioides) Biological Sciences
Viana, Diego Carvalho; Santos, Amilton Cesar dos; Chaves, Lianne Fernandes Araujo; Oliveira, Antonia Santos; Assís Neto, Antônio Chaves de; Sousa, Alana Lislea de.
The reptile Kinosternon scorpioides is a freshwater chelonian, popularly known as jurará, and is found in the Baixada Maranhense, Maranhão State, Brazil. Due to the lack of scientific information on the reproductive biology of the species, current paper describes the body and testicular biometry and the gonad-somatic index (GSI) in adult specimens collected from the natural environment. Twenty male adults were collected in the rainy (n = 10) and dry (n = 10) seasons. Data were derived from the body, testis size and GSI and tests of correlation between these measures were performed. The body biometrics of free-living Kinosternon scorpioides is similar to those found in other studies for adult animals bred in captivity. The body weight was higher in animals...

Histological and immunohistochemical study of the thyroid gland of the broad-snouted caiman (Caiman latirostris) - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i4.18444 Biological Sciences
Machado-Santos, Clarice; Universidade Federal da Bahia.; Teixeira, Monalisa Jales; Médica Veterinária Autônoma; Sales, Armando; Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro; Abidu-Figueiredo, Marcelo; Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro.
The broad-snouted caiman, Caiman latirostris, is widely distributed in countries of South America. In Brazil it is considered an endangered species because of natural habitat destruction and illegal hunting.  In reptiles, the thyroid gland plays an integral part in ecdysis, reproduction, tail regeneration, growth, endocrine function and metabolism rate. The aim of the present study was to characterize the thyroid gland morphology of C. latirostris, based on histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques. The thyroid glands were fixed in Bouin's fluid and serial cross sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin, Mallory’s trichrome, periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and Alcian blue (AB pH 1.5 and 2.5). The immunohistochemical technique for 5-HT-IR cells was...

Pampean lizard assemblage from subtropical Brazil: a temporal analysis Anais da ABC (AABC)
Winck,Gisele R.; Santos,Tiago G. Dos; Cechin,Sonia Z..
The increasing human occupation of natural environments is one of the greatest threats to biodiversity. To mitigate the negative anthropogenic effects, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of natural populations and the natural history of species. A study was conducted with an assemblage of lizards from a disturbed area of the Pampa biome, from February 2001 to January 2004. The assemblage showed a unimodal seasonal pattern, with the recruitment period occurring during the warmer months. The captures were seasonal for two of the three monitored years, and concentrated within warmer months. The minimum temperature explained the number of catches for the assemblage as a whole. However, when the species were analyzed individually, the temperature...

Cutaneous mycobiota of boid snakes kept in captivity Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Freire,B.C.; Garcia,V.C.; Quadrini,A.E.; Bentubo,H.D.L..
ABSTRACT Boids are large, constrictor snakes that feed mostly on mammals, reptiles, and birds. These animals are commonly raised as pets, and their improper handling can favor the emergence of fungal infections, which can lead to dermatological diseases that are undiagnosed in nature. Here, we isolate and identify the filamentous fungi that compose the mycobiota of the scales of boid snakes kept in captivity at the Biological Museum of the Butantan Institute. Thirty individuals of four species were evaluated: four Eunectes murinus, twelve Boa constrictor constrictor, seven Corallus hortulanus, and seven Epicrates crassus. Microbiological samples were collected by rubbing small square carpets on the snake scales. We isolated five genera of fungi:...

Herpetofauna of protected areas in the Caatinga III: The Catimbau National Park, Pernambuco, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Pedrosa,Isabella Mayara Monteiro de Carvalho; Costa,Taís Borges; Faria,Renato Gomes; França,Frederico Gustavo Rodrigues; Laranjeiras,Daniel Orsi; Oliveira,Thiago César Sena Pereira de; Palmeira,Cristiane Nikely Silva; Torquato,Selma; Mott,Tami; Vieira,Gustavo Henrique Calazans; Garda,Adrian Antonio.
Despite the increase in herpetofaunal inventories in the Caatinga biome, information for many areas is still lacking and new surveys are required. We conducted a 30-day inventory of the herpetofauna of the Catimbau National Park, Pernambuco State, Brazil. Thirty-seven pitfall trap arrays composed of 4 buckets each, along with glue traps and active searches were used to sample local herpetofaunal diversity. We recorded 21 species of frogs, 25 lizards, 11 snakes, and 1 chelonian. All sampling methods contributed significantly to achieve the amphibian and reptile diversity recovered in the inventory. Rarefaction curves and richness estimators suggest that local biodiversity is still underestimated. We attempted to show the great potential of Catimbau National...

The herpetofauna of Parque Nacional da Serra das Confusões, state of Piauí, Brazil, with a regional species list from an ecotonal area of Cerrado and Caatinga Biota Neotropica
Dal Vechio,Francisco; Teixeira Jr.,Mauro; Recoder,Renato Sousa; Rodrigues,Miguel Trefault; Zaher,Hussam.
Abstract Different physiognomies at Parque Nacional da Serra das Confusões (PNSCo) were intensively sampled aiming to access the distribution pattern of its herpetofauna. Sixty six species were found in the park (47 reptiles and 19 amphibians); the rarefaction curve for lizards, although not fully stabilized in an asymptote, indicates that the sampling effort was enough to reveal most lizard species occurring in the area; and richness estimators recovered values close to observed. For amphibians, the curve shows a weak tendency to stabilization with richness estimators indicating that additional records could be done. Field work carried out at PNSCo has highlighted an unique herpetofauna: five new species were described and there are three candidates as...

Head triangulation as anti-predatory mechanism in snakes Biota Neotropica
Dell'Aglio,Denise Dalbosco; Toma,Tiago Shizen Pacheco; Muelbert,Adriane Esquivel; Sacco,Anne Gomes; Tozetti,Alexandro Marques.
Anti-predator mechanisms in snakes are diverse and complex, including mimetic behavior. Some snakes triangulate their head, probably mimicking other more dangerous snakes. However, there is a lack of studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of this behavior with natural predators. The aim of this study was to verify, using artificial snakes, if snakes with triangular heads are less susceptible to attack by predators, and if predatory attack is targeted to the head of serpents. Artificial snakes were systematically arranged on a road border. The rate of attacked models was 48.71%. Number of attacks on models with rounded head was significantly higher than in models with triangular head. There was a significant difference between the places of attack on...

Does human influence on coastal grasslands habitats affect predation pressure on snakes? Biota Neotropica
Santos,Mauricio Beux dos; Oliveira,Mauro Cesar Lamim Martins de; Gonçalves,Tatiane Penteado; Almeida,Francis de Mattos; Loebmann,Daniel; Tozetti,Alexandro Marques.
The loss and modification of habitats by humans have been considered key factors in the decline of diversity of species worldwide. However, the real effect caused by these disturbances on the biota is still poorly understood. The assessment of the changes in the network of interspecific interactions, such as predation rates on the native fauna, can be an important tool to diagnose the functionality of disturbed ecosystems. In this study we evaluate the predation rate on snakes in coastal grasslands in South America under human influence. Predation rate of artificial snakes, unlike that obtained in other studies, was lower in human-altered areas than preserved ones. Our findings may be due to a reduction in the abundance and/or richness of species of native...

Species inventories are useful tools to improve conservation strategies, especially in highly threatened biomes such as the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Here we present a species list of amphibians and reptiles for the Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu (REGUA), a forest reserve located in the central portion of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. The list results from an extensive sampling effort that lasted ten years. A total of 73 amphibian (of which ten are endemic to the state) and 37 reptile species was recorded from the area. Five amphibian species are presently categorized by the IUCN as “data-deficient”, two as “near threatened” and one as “endangered”, whereas one reptile species is categorized as “vulnerable”. Our results showed that REGUA harbors about...

Intracoelomic pressure and coelomic perfusion pressure in healthy tegus (Salvator merianae) Ciência Rural
Silva,André Nicolai Elias da; Bressan,Thais Feres; Carregaro,Adriano Bonfim.
ABSTRACT: The evaluation of intracoelomic pressure is very important, as many diseases can culminate with an increase in intracoelomic pressure and a consequent reduction in perfusion of the abdominal organs. The aim of this study was to measure the intracoelomic pressure and coelomic perfusion pressure in tegus (Salvator merianae). Twelve healthy tegus without sexual distinctions, weighing 1.64±0.39kg, were enrolled in this study. Intracoelomic pressure was measured using two methods: a handmade water column system and a pressure transducer connected to a multiparameter monitor. Coelomic perfusion pressure was determined by subtracting the intracoelomic pressure from the mean arterial pressure, which was measured using an oscillometric method....

ANALISIS DE LA EVALUACION MAS RECIENTE DEL ESTADO DE CONSERVACION DE LOS ANFIBIOS Y REPTILES DE ARGENTINA Gayana
Ubeda,Carmen; Grigera,Dora.

Development, comparative morphology and cornification of reptilian claws in relation to claws evolution in tetrapods Naturalis
Alibardi, L..
The development of claws in different reptiles and their cornification are analyzed using histological, ultrastructural and autoradiographic methods. Claws develop at the tip of digits in relation to the growth of the terminal phalanx and appear as modified scales. The apical epidermis of digit becomes thickened and is associated with a mesenchymal condensation or a dense mesenchyme. The dorsal side of the digit becomes the unguis while the ventral side becomes the sub-unguis. The corneous layer in the unguis is thicker than in the sub-unguis and accumulates hard-keratin while corneocytes remain separated or partially fused. Bundles of hard-keratin tend to accumulate in parallel orientation with respect to the surface and are directed toward the claw tip....

Spix and Wagler type specimens of reptiles and amphibians in the Natural History Musea in Munich (Germany) and Leiden (The Netherlands) Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S.; Gruber, U..
An evaluation of the existing SPIX/WAGLER type material in the museums in Munich and Leiden is given. It transpired that a considerable part of the type material, which was thought to have been destroyed during the second world war, is still extant. The material is described briefly, its presenttaxonomic status is discussed and, where necessary, lectotypes are selected. Arising from this survey a number of nomenclatural changes are necessary. Natrix cinnamomea Wagler is here considered a species incertae sedis, possibly a species of Pseutes, which contrasts with the current opinion that this is a species of Chironius. BotbropsMegaera Wagler and B. leucurusWagler are consideredconspecifie and should be known under the name B. leucurus Wagler. Both B. Furia...
