Complications have hampered the adoption of Universal Product Codes (UPCs) for fresh produce until recently. The data being collected using Bar Codes and Price Look-Up Codes (PLUs) have many applications. A case study of carrots demonstrates how analyses of scanning data can show the effects of new items on established products and the customer's willingness to pay for the new products. For precut and organic carrots in a Knoxville area supermarket chain, total carrot volume increased as the new products were introduced while regular (bunch) sales declined sharply. Consumers were willing to pay a premium for the convenience of precut products. |

By 2020, Dutch dairy chains envisage to be self-sufficient with regard to energy used by dairy farms and dairy processors. This would require dairy farms to produce 25 PJ per year, possibly by a combination of wind, solar and biogas. Current analyses focus on biogas. To evaluate the project’s feasibility we estimated the expected technical and financial performance of 4 types of business models, i.e. “CHP-farm”, “CHP-large”, “green gas” and “central upgrading”. Data stem among others from 23 biogas plants in the Netherlands. Anticipating that CHP-models and green gas models occur with a likelihood of 40% and 60% respectively, the total number of biogas plants at dairy farms would amount to 463. There would however be an expected deficit of Euro 157 million... |

This study estimates the expected benefits from adoption of new water-related technologies for the Texas High Plains, a region which is currently mining groundwater. Adoption rates for two improved irrigation systems and limited tillage practices are assumed, and changes in net returns, resource usage, and irrigated acres are examined as measures of adoption benefits. A recursive linear programming framework covering a 40-year period is employed, with results indicating that, contrary to what one might hope, adoption will not significantly lengthen the life of the aquifer. Annual water use changes very little with adoption, while irrigated acreages increase slightly. Adoption does provide a substantial increase in annual net returns, with discounted... |

The Brazilian organic market has been growing year by year, and it is important for the country because its production system preserves the environment, besides creating employments and income for rural workers. For this, it is necessary that these producers define ways of competing in the market, focusing on aspects that really add value to the clients. The objective of this research was to investigate, based on the rural producer’s perceptions, factors which affect the competition in the production of organic foodstuffs in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. This study can be classified as an applied research study, with descriptive objective and quantitative approach. The instrument used was the form, which aimed to research on the producers of organic... |

The availability of efficiency estimation software freely distributed via the internet and relatively easy to use recently inflated the number of corresponding applications. The resulting efficiency estimates are used without a critical assessment with respect to the literature on theoretical consistency, flexibility and the choice of the appropriate functional form. The robustness of policy suggestions based on inferences from efficiency measures nevertheless crucially depends on theoretically well-founded estimates. This paper addresses stochastic efficiency measurement by critically reviewing the theoretical consistency of recently published technical efficiency estimates with respect to economic development. The results confirm the need for a... |

This paper develops a frontier shadow cost function approach to estimate empirically the effects of technological change, technical and allocative efficiency improvement in Chinese agriculture during the reform period (1980-93). The results reveal that the first phase rural reforms (1979-84) which focused on the decentralization of the production system have had significant impact on technical efficiency but not allocative efficiency. During the second phase reforms which was supposed to focus on the liberalization of rural markets, technical efficiency improved very little and allocative efficiency has increased only slightly, however. In contrast, the rate of technological change continued to increase, although at a declining rate during the second phase... |

Major shifts in world economy, society and technology will cause dramatic changes in Dutch horticulture and in the attitude of the government towards research. The horticulture industry will change from a production-driven to a customer-driven strategy while developing market-oriented product chains. More than ever, knowledge becomes a critical factor in competition. In contrast with the past, the horticulture industry will protect knowledge to increase its profitability. The government will choose to focus on basic sciences, leaving applied research mainly to the industry. This is a major shift since the government used to be responsible for most research. Complete institutional research programmes are no longer state-financed; instead, a system of... |

Research resource allocation strategy has been worked out for the livestock sector across districts/ regions of the Gujarat state by using multi-criteria scoring model. The study has covered all the 19 districts of the state and six livestock species. In the commodity priority, the highest share (83%) has been claimed by milk research, followed by draught power (15%). The research share of meat, egg, skin and hair & wool is very low. The trend has been found same in the state as well as the districts. Within milk research, buffalo milk has got the highest priority in all the districts and research on poultry meat has claimed the highest share in meat research in most of the districts. The hide research should focus on the goat hide in the most of the... |

We analyze online auction prices for top range Bordeaux wine sold on the German eBay site, evaluating the impact of eBay specifics such as auction length, timing of the auction end (day of week, time of day), number of bids, buyer interest (page count), seller reputation, initial prices, picture effects, or private auctions (bidder identity remains undisclosed). Moreover, we evaluate the impact of Parker's rating and whether this quality information is revealed. Other variables of interest are wine age, brands, regional origin, and the 1855 classification. We estimate a main model and two subsets (with page counter, initial bid equal 1). Our hedonic estimation of the full sample reveals that relative to Sundays, wine auctions ending on Fridays resulted in... |
